this is the artistic style of "trowing" mawashi geri.On kumite ,or when you give mawashi geri at full force you will se how easy is to pivot right ,i can to do in my shoes ,boots.I repeat ,he is just showing how a mawashi should be "thrown".
A mawashi i ,ushiro geri and others can pe very devastating if they are thrown in the ehad ,torso ,or the back part of the leg . i beated the crap out of 2 kiokushinkay students ,just reliyng on brute force (legs and hands).Kiokushin is just a sport now.
yes it is a good kick, what you say is not wrong but he is showing the right "start" the rest comes with training. Important has he shows is to be "strong" and properly balanced on the standing foot....Remember nothing is easy to show in a short video
I'm not a Shotokan fan, but Lyoto Michida - i *hope* you know who i'm talkin' about - comes from this style. So, yes: Stotokan Karatekas *can* enter full contact tournements: they've just to train how to hit enemy.
The reason most shotokan people don't enter kyokushinkai tournaments is because the just stand there and pound each other;s bodies with no real thought of body shifting or strategies. Also, shotokan punches to the head where I don't believe kyokushi people do.
lol it's like fake sparring comparing to kyokushinkai, why the fuck do you bash a style for nothing? Watch Kenji Midori fighting you'll see very good body shifting and strategies.
real fights . So when you fight in the street you ask your opponent. Please dont punch me in the face bcos I train Kyokushikai but please punch my cheast..? Be real people what we do on tatamis is a sport and not 100% related to when we train traditional karate.
That's not quite true. It's a tendancy certainly in the west for Shotokan to be quite light however different regions and clubs have different standards. In afghanistan for example or iran or even in parts of japan Shotokan is practiced with full contact which results in strong well rounded fighters (less the constant threat of injury of course!).
I have 2 sensei from Iran in Shotokan and trust me, it's not 'light' at all :)
If anyone on here has any doubt of Sensei Shearer's ability. Take the time to train with him.Its so easy to slag off someone sitting behind your keyboard like a keyboard warrior. Go to his Dojo I am sure Paul will tell you how to get there.
Having trained under Sensei Shearer many years ago I can vouch for his power and focus. Most of you on here that haven't trained with him are talking absolute bollocks. You are disrespecting his art and his style but haven't even trained under him. I did freefighting with him once and he accidently caught me in the stomach with a Mae Geri. I started getting back pain a couple of days lster. I went to an Osteopath and was told I had a mis-aligned vertebra.
Hey Brink01,having trained with Sensei Shearer now for 5 years believe me don't judge the man by his age,I know from experience that his technical ability and the energy he releases would devastate anybody...Only judge when ,you know precisely what you are talking about.....
people think the shotokan way of kicking is bad because it doesn't involved leaving the ground in some kind of 1940 degree roundhouse face splitting ax kick of shinku doom. If it's not in the media then it's "bad" to alot of people. Obviously they've never been hit by a real shotokan student's roundhouse before, which is a shame because it'd shut them up and their ignorant assumptions rather quickly.
Your not really aswering the question, so here's another one, why is the shotokan way of kicking so bad? or will you just ask me another question? Don't make such statements unless you can explain what you mean.
paulshep have you watch fight science about MMA here at youtube? look for the kicks part of that video here and let's see what the is you comment about the scientist's comments about bas rutten's roundhouse kick. hell and tell me what are the differences of it's take off between shotokan's or any modern karate. coz i'm tellin you the positioning is just the difference. but the take off or the way it came from is just the same. these guys are just practicing and they are old too no offense
i think K-1 tournaments they can enter. i don't see any reason why they can't enter k-1 tourneys. as for shotokan tourneys. first is the way shotokan's and kyokoshin's way of rules about tourneys. modern/technical shotokan nowadays is just for sport, meaning less contact. kyokoshin's way is full contact.
Well I am sure he would give you a personal demo if you wanted. Its easy to sit behind a keyboard coming out with stupid quips about someones style. Believe me I know him personally. Don't be fooled he is devastating.
That's cause he isn't using speed, so he can show how to do the kick. When this kick is used with a good technique and a high speed it can be very precisely and effectively executed to inflict a lot of damage.
there are many variations of mawashi geri and i think you are too picky in this case. He may be leaning too much but it is always easier to criticize then do it yourself.

nothing personal against this man, but is this a good way to do mawashi geri?
what seems strange to me is the flicking back of the leg instead of kicking through, and no stepping in.
pivoting on the foot being good/not good is a different debate maybe, but that too,

It's an awesome technique when you have shoes on.

He needs to raise more knee to the side before he bring it forward or it will be blocked easily. Mawashi Geri means comes around from out side.
