I bought a Patriot because I wanted a car that could handle Light offroading and was good on road.

Now I regret it. I want a Real offorader now. Wasted my money on the patriot :(

those aren't the off road tires that you can get with it. When you get them it comes with the kick plates underneath and also comes with waterproof underneath just for this. Funny. Still pretty good. Imagine a CRV or a KIA doing this. They would sink.

I agree i have a patriot FD1 with RRO Lift Kit and Yokohama AT tires. i spent every day of the blizzard last winter rescuing all my neighbors around town. And SUV's and were still stuck. I drove my jeep patriot through 3 to 4ft of untouched snow off road because all the vehicles were stuck around me blocking all the streets. Some of the full size SUV's couldn't make it through there. MY PATRIOT DID. Good tires and a lift and turn the ESP OFF that thing will drive through anything.

BF Goodrich All Terrains have deep lugs and are good for mud and snow and they look great. They a good compromise for off road and street use.

Goodyear Wrangler AT/S are great compromise tire too and Yokohama Geolander AT/s are good.

Best use of ESP in mud?

Yesterday, I found the ESP system in my Patriot saved me, when I was out off-roading and ended up in a gumbo mud puddle that was deeper than I thought.

It took about 10 minutes for me to back out, because it would just creep back 1/2 inch at a time. It seemed like the engine / transmission was maxed out as I did this. I thought about turning off the ESP, but was afraid of starting the wheels spinning.

Any suggestions for next time for me?
