@CrashHavokTV You're taking it for face value. You are comparing it to your past experiences and not looking into it. Don't compare it to anything. Look into this different vision and what they are standing for. This isn't a rap song, this is like nothing that has been done. Realize that. It's genius if you understand that.
@irathegreat1 Rap is a genre too (not saying this should be defined so simply), but my point is that just because someone raps doesn't make the music hip hop. This is closer to a lot of other genre's before hip hop if you ask me. Just a classification so fuck it, just tired of people calling anything with rap hip-hop and thus applying the same standards of hip hop to it. This should be considered for what it is, as unique.
@Pied3 Let's pretend most people aren't as naive as you about creating something new to your reality. Don't worry, there's a free support group: life.
@moralreef I can. But only as a knee jerk reaction to it being different, and not as an enjoyable/creative/well made piece of music. I'm not even saying theres anything wrong with enjoying music just because it's so different, but am saying that is the most likely cause of praise here, because this doesn't sound good.
@Pied3 i think a lot of people like it because they haven't heard this level of aggression in hip-hop before. a lot of people are saying its closer to hardcore punk in places, which i would agree with. if you go to their live shows, it is INCREDIBLY packed and very energetic; there is a genuine desire from the crowd to see this band. maybe you don't think it sounds good, but i definitely do enjoy it, it hasn't left my song rotation all year, and i imagine for a lot of people it hasn't either.
@moralreef Point taken. I'm being an idiot to pretend there is some universal definition of "good" that this doesn't conform too. I'm glad you enjoy it, i do too.
@Pied3 I think you're just mad because you don't get it. This is a fucking great song. It has nothing to do with it sounding different. If I wanted to listen to something shit for the sake of being different I'd listen to Throbbing Gristle or some shit.
Anyway different is good. Who the fuck wants to listen to shit that sounds exactly the same as something that's already been done.
@Wharrrrrgarbl I'm not saying different is bad, i'm not saying i "get it". Maybe i don't. But the appeal to this type of music has to be primarily in it's stark difference to a lot expectations in music. Let's not pretend it sounds good.
@Pied3 - ??? speak for yourself. you are describing your own expectations and definition of good. something doesnt have to be pretty or hifi to sound good. perhaps when youre in another mood you might get it.
@martianwarlordtv It's funny because i like a lot of lo-fi harsh sounding stuff, and i like this. I was a fool to act as though there is some universal definition of "good" that this doesn't conform to. Point taken.
If you think this is an example of something different for the sake of being different, with nothing else to it, then you don't know music at all. This is just their style and it's fucking great. It's one of the best hiphop albums I've heard in years.
I have no reason to pretend I like this, especially not to some manchild on youtube that uploads magic videos. I just like it.
@Wharrrrrgarbl Point taken. I'm being an idiot to pretend there is some universal definition of "good" that this doesn't conform too. I'd like to think i'm just a child, and not a manchild. I like it too.
@Pied3 What does that mean, "sound good"? All dynamic music is about the tension between dissonance and consonance. Different cultures and different time periods have had different definitions of acceptable consonance and acceptable dissonance. Beethoven would sound horrendous and dissonant to the audience of Bach - hell much of his work was too harsh for his own time period. Now, in the 21st century, we can consume a vast array of different musics and sound, one shouldn't squander such a gift.
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssssssstttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D best beast
New haven't looked up on this group since I dled the album the day it came out, glad to see it is getting the recognition it deserves. I've listened to it atleast 20 times
I have always thought that the angry black guy used to be in the military (hence the name "Ex-Military") because he acts and looks a lot like the veterans I've talked too, and most of the songs are about killing people, using drugs, selling drugs, being drunk, and other random acts of violence. Which could have been the things he experienced before or after being the military. I don't know.
I have always thought that the angry black guy used to be in the military (hence the name "Ex-Military") because he acts and looks a lot like the veterans I've talked too, and most of the songs are about killing people, using drugs, selling drugs, being drunk, and other random acts of violence. This is raw. It's so intense and different from everything else. Most people won't understand it, which means most people won't like it, which is a shame.
The only publicized member of Death Grips is Zach Hill, the drummer of Hella. He produced all these fucking nasty, loud as fuck beats we hear on Ex-Military. I'm fairly sure the dude rapping is some fucking bat-shit crazy, Methed the fuck out Hobo who Zach found living in the desert or something. Dude is I N S A N E. PUNK! BIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAATCH!
if im out and im listening to this as soon as he screams PUNK BIIIIATCH i honestly feel like punching the closest person to me in the face really hard
These guys practice right down the street from my house... they are so insanely heavy live it's not even funny. Some of my favorite music anywhere right now.
@Angryjazz do they live in a house? I just assumed Death Grips was the product of angry homeless drug taking America...if they live in a house that will be a bit less awesome...but still fucking killz
@mMurderTV They practice in a fire-damaged '74 Gran Torino 4 door with the top cut off and a dead hooker cable-tied to the front left fender - she's been there so long shit's starting to fall off.
