if you like sam hain, you'll like sam hain from the 80's real ghostbusters series. in the episodes "when halloween was forever" & the two part episode "halloween". he had an action figure for the series. as well as two new action figures for the retro-action release. and is in the comics too. the writer & director of trick r treat. probably saw this growing up as they would have been that age & into that sort of thing. this is likely their inspiration for their version of the character.
This sort of just feels like the director was trying too hard to be avant garde and instead just made your usual mainstream "hip" random art film. I can honestly say I am disappointed. I expected more.
wow, what an acute film analysis. but i thought having my puppy in a bee costume was avant garde. your "critique" is as pretentious as what you claim this 2:40 long video about a trick r' treat character is. thanks for shattering my dreams to become the next pedro costa or apichatpong weerasethakul. i can't wait to see your non "hip" random art films so that i can learn from the best.
i kinda didnt really sorta kinda get it... whats the connection with the dentistry? the box? the splat after the door? so many questions... :( i wanna know you sam!
It's very pretty, but I don't really get it. Sigh. Guess I'm the kind of viewer whom you'll have to slam in the meaning into my head like a sledgehammer.
this short is more of an interpretation of sam. it presupposes the idea of sam being a normal boy and ultimately transforming into the "sam" we all come to know. this is by all means not a literal translation or absolute backstory. that's for the director/writer to decide. thanks for the comment though!
I think thats what makes his little character creepy. Though I wish they gave a little more back story to his character as well. The less we know I guess it better. What I got out of Sam is that he is the protector of halloween traditions. Thats why he is there during every "traditional" halloween scene in the movie.
