  • Hello, i have a bulldog/cocker spaniel mix. He stopped pulling on the leash when we walked around the backyard, but when we tried walking down the block he kept pulling in either direction. PLEASE HELP

  • Honestly, I cried when you dropped the leashes and the dogs followed you nevertheless. It was so beautiful.

  • i am having such a hard time. I've tried the stopping while he's pulling and as soon as we start walking again he goes right back to pulling. I always make sure he walks towards me again before we start walking. I have also tried changing directions and he just pulls in the direction we change! its so frustating!!! help.... 12 week old siberian husky

  • great video but my puppy don't move until she sees me putting the treat or action putting the treat... :( any suggestion?

  • you make it look so easy!! i wish i had your skillz!! how long should it take for me to train my 1yr old dog to loose leash walk?

  • I like what you showed us and I will try your techniques. I have tried hard but have never changed my walks as yet and will try it. It will still know where I would go but he may just learn to be more aware of me, possibly he trusts me too much. Do not try it on a busy road!

  • this will never work with a springer spaniel lmao

  • treat training= shame on u...

  • my pitbull rotmweiler (rocky) pulls on the leash when I go out with then when I drop the leash he gets all like sad and like dnt leave me but when I hold the leash he says like let me go u

  • I need to try this, I think I hurt my dog today using the choke chains, I feel terrible

  • Have not tried yet but will. All this makes scence.

  • I have a German shepherd/ black lab mix. And when I got him at 2 months the first time I took him walking he stayed next to me. And has stayed next to me for every walk since. It's astounding

  • i have been working on this now for six weeks it dont work.

  • After 3 weeks of being dragged along by my (surprisingly strong) springer puppy I decided to try this method. My clicker arrived yesterday morning and we started practising on yesterday afternoon's walk and he quickly got the idea. He was better this morning, and by the end of this afternoon's walk, he's definitely got it. We're not perfect yet by any means but the difference in the space of just three walks is unbelievable. I'm stunned by the results, and a complete convert. Thank you!

  • My German shepherd takes me for a walk instead of me taking him.

  • I have a 9 month old Border Collie and she is a pain to walk with! I am trying these methods today :)

  • Wow. You have suggestions on here that I haven't seen anywhere else.

  • Thanks! Great video. I have a new puppy and will try your technique. I looked other videos, but yours was the most comprehensive one.

  • I like this as it involves positive reinforcement.

As for training...I sometimes wonder just who is training who?

  • lol Too bad this does not work, with my lil wild child. lol

  • Great videos.

  • 1:55 c'mon puppy, pup-pup-pup-pup-pup-puppy!

  • What if my dog is not driven by food? my dog very often will dismiss treats.

  • Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to get my dog to heel for over a year now

  • Hi mam, I have a question, what is more good to put my dog, in a dog cage or let him in dog leash?

  • @kikopup or any body else.. Iv been working alot n out of the house to much, now I got time yo catchup on training my pitbull dog.i tryd walking with him but hes just a little wild on the walk.i pull yhe leash nack n treat him to stay along, but he eat the treat n goes back to his own.is there a quicker accute training I could used.like a choke collard, spike collard, shortning the leash for a while or idk.you or an ybody shud or could know more then me.lol thnx!!

  • For 3 years I struggled with my dog.. i can't believe youtube helped, well actually your video saved me. I can't wait to try this. I live in the city so I'm gonna have to go in the park really early when there are no kids out. TY!

  • I could NEVER let my dog off her leash.. She is a Husky Chow mix and is VERY bad at walking beside me.

  • Great video, thank you!

  • my dog is an angel indoors dose as shes told but the second you put her lead on she goes mad i cant even practice this indoors because she pulls like mad towards the door when we get outside all the things i taught her she wont do even if i get her attention she still wont do it and it makes me look stupid when i walk her she pulls towards other dogs to play but because shes a staffy people are scared and i look like i cant control my dog what can i do???

  • Hi Emily, I've been watching your all your dog training videos, specially the attention games and loose leash walking ones. I'm having a problem with my 5 yr old Border Collie, she is great inside the house and on our yard, but the very moment I take out her leash, she gets over excited and aroused, and I really can't make her even look at me. Any suggestions or ideas? I tried using high value treats, but she wont eat them. Same for toys. Thank you!

  • MY dog doesn't eat the treats i give it.

  • My dog can heel on and off the leash. When she is off the leash she dose awesome. The only problem is when she is not heeling on the leash. She will pull on the leash but if I tell her to heel she dose fine. How do I tech her the difference between heeling and being on a leash?

  • my dog dosent only pulls he even bites a the rope and he dosnt stop what should i do............?

  • Really great video I know a little about walking dogs but the moving forward part is amazing and I'm about to go walk my dog and try it now thank you so much!!

  • how can i get my pitbull to walk...i take him outside on a leash to walk and all he does is lay on the floor and not wanna walk

  • @CALIFORNIAspaceship lol i had the same issue, i have a pitt cross staffy. but mine is only a pup, what i used to do is pick him and walk with him in my hand then put him down and he seems to get the idea.

if this dosnt work try just walking around the house with a leash and treat him every time he follows. biggest issue i have is him pulling on the leash too much, need to find a solution for that :)

  • Make your about faces suddenly and with some force according to the weight and size of the dog. Do this before the leash becomes tight. After a few of those, he'll want to keep an eye on you as to prevent this correction. It may seem harsh but its not. Otherwise he trains and controls you.

Anyone who disagrees has the right to do so and is welcomed if in a tactful manner.

    Thank you

  • brilliant thank you just what i need!! i love the way at the end of the video the dogs crosws over to right/left side to stay in their position

  • This is just the video i needed. thanks alot!! :D

  • I hope this works thank you :)

  • Gracias

  • my puppy is next to me but once we get near another dog or human she pulls me. and sometimes she gets distracted by a leave or even a fly.

  • @bassface4lif3 She's a puppy. :P It's normal for her to be curious.

  • This is all very well with a chihuaha and miniature breeds that even a child could walk, but what about other bigger breeds (e.g. alsatian or dalmatian)?

  • my 6 month pug will only walk if I jog! but if i walk slowly he just stops and bites the leash!

  • I have a golden retriever puppy--11 weeks old. He's doing pretty well on the leash, but he wants to carry it in his mouth the whole way. I've tried giving him something else to carry, but he'll only do that for a short time, sniff something else, drop it, and then go back to biting the leash. I've tried Bitter Apple, but that doesn't deter him at all.

  • i want my dog to pull he always stays behind why is he so scared im not going to step on him

  • @101eminem101 Hold a treat next to your hip when you're walking him and when he stays next to you, give it to him.

I don't know if this will work but you can give it a shot...

  • would a dog being in front of the owner but with a little slack on the leash be considered loose leash walking? or does the dog have to be by ur side to be considered loose leash?

  • Loose lease is the way to go! When you do go on those walks, keep a Dawggie Go Pak handy!

  • this is WAYYYYYY easier said than done ,my boxer dog is defiant

  • yeah I tried all that it doesn't work. The only thing that has worked is getting them to stop pulling is putting the collar on the weakest part of the neck when you walk.

  • Great video! Those dogs are better trained than a lot of people I know. Maybe including me... ;-)

  • ill try this with my pitbull and golden retriever hope it works

  • Ive tried this with my 6month old standard poodle, and it works well. but i have one problem, whenever we start our walk, he often goes past me, unless i have my clicker with me and clicks before he does, then he walks nice on my side. how do i get him to always walk beside me? even if i dont have my clicker with me? will i alwaya have to tell him to? is it just that i need to train more?

  • i have a red noise pitbull i hope this works and im 15

  • This is a very informative video. The loose leash is the way to go and we all can learn to be better handlers. Dawggie Go Pak likes this video and maybe the Pak can help you on those walks.

  • my beagle dog would pull hard and bark at animals and people..she won't eat treats when she's walking outside.. what should i do?

  • Emily: My dog, Lobo, is great so far, but whenever I go to turn around, he stops. I end standing there with my back to him for a long time before he (very reluctantly) turns back around. This has been going on for a few days, and the time isn't getting any shorter. He's an akita/husky mix: VERY stubborn. Sometimes, training becomes a battle of wills. I'm so happy I'm an Aries and more stubborn than he is, haha. Great videos, by the way. You're so amazing.

  • My Golden-Lab simply comes back when i tell her to heal (i say backup) and lunges forward as soon as i start walking. She is on full speed no matter what.

So it works like this: She pulls the leash tight way in front of me, i stop and say "backup" and she backs up really fast and sits, and as soon as i take a step she lunges forward again ahead of me tightening the leash. She literally does not know how to walk at a calm pace. She's 2 and a half.

  • I have a deaf dog, and she's incredibly bright! I know these training tips would work well for my dog if she could hear. Can you think of any innovative ways of letting her know she's doing it right?

  • i trained my dog not to pull by just leaving the leash on him while he was in the house, so he just got use to having it. Leave it on when your cleaning the house or doing things around the house. When i took him outside he no longer pulled the leash. Not saying it will work for every dog but it worked for me

  • Nice presentation. Very informative

  • My dog is a mix Labrador, He is 8 years old and went to training as a puppy, sadly my family didn't go with me to all the sessions, so everybody spoiled him and his training is bad when walking outside. When we go for a walk he pulls desperately and wants to jump to explore and play with every dog. And If he finds smells from other dogs he will brace himself against the floor to lick and I have to pull him very hard. He's being wearing a training collar that hurts him during his whole life. Help

  • Thank you for the video! I'm trying to teach my 2yr old bully who we just adopted a few months ago not to pull, and I really like your techniques.

  • WOW! Your videos are impressive and very well put together. Do you have a video on basic "click" training? I don't know a thing about it.

  • @dodgerbuddy7 I do have a video if you look up "what is clicker training" but I dont go over the basics of the basics. If you go to clicker training . com... they have some articles. My new puppy vids that go over the basics of behavior mod for puppies is on my website under new puppy vids - dogmantics

  • OMG I wish my dog would do that. I going for a walk right now!

  • LOVE all your videos and your positive reinforcement techniques. Gonna head out and try this technique right now :)

  • Very nicely explained. I use most of this technique with the assistance dog candidate pups that I raise for an agency. It seems work best with clicker training - AND handler consistency.

My only issue with this is the dropping of the treat on the ground. It dircetly conflicts with the concept of 'Leave It' and risks ingestion of something toxic.

You DO mention handing them the treat, but it sounds like an afterthought and I almost missed it.

  • @katboxjanitor I like to put food on the ground in training- especially with aggressive and reactive dogs- as it gets them to sniff the ground. The difference is I want pet dogs to sniff the ground, were service dogs can't really do that. Sniffing is calming, and reinforcing too. Obviously you need to train your dog not to lunge and eat trash in the street- but dogs can understand the gesture of putting a treat down means get it, and a mcdonalds wrapper not so much

  • @kikopup Thanks for that clarification. I actually found this video through a link someone suggested to people who indicated they were trying to train a service dog and found this video useful for LLW. Unfortunately, I cannot recall where, tho I did leave a similar comment on their posting as a caution, since the thread did not strike me as a formal training setting.

This is one of the better explanation\demo videos of this technique and we do appreciate it!

  • very helpful, thanks heaps walks are sweet as...

  • I have a medium size dog (about 80 pounds) and he just stands still for like 5 minutes at a time. Very frustrating, I can't make him follow me.

  • you should have your own tv show on animal planet

  • how do you use these techniques on large german shepherds? i volunteer at a rescue and they always pull. some of them couldn't careless about treats. it's so exhausting and i've pulled a few muscles..

  • I have a one year old johnsons american bulldog that pulls on the leash and is not food motivated. This little doggy trick will never work with him.

  • @StevenFraser1980 In this video I am showing with a dog that doesnt want to eat either- yt search "No Pulling!: Clicker Dog Training " Basically your dog is too stressed to eat. A good idea is to go outside often and just hang out in a chair and work on settles outside even before attempting walking- when a dog stops eating it means they are so aroused their body is taking blood away from the stomach. You need to capture calmness first- see my "capturing calmness ' video too

  • Any advice how to train 2 puppies to walk together either on a double leash or separate leashes? I have tried both and they just want to chase and play with eacother. I was trying to take them to potty together as well as just to wall them.

  • That's very helpful. I am going to try that tomorrow. I have a quick question, I have 2 puppies, any tips on how to train them together to walk on leashes? I have tried to walk them together and on a double leash and all they want to do is play and chase eachother. I was trying to do this to start taking them to potty together. Any advice is appreciated!

  • my dashound does this ,gonna try this ,what can i use as a clicker?

  • Love your videos. Have you ever finished the tutorial for the barrier training? The finished product is amazing Now I'd like to see how YOU do it. I really want to give my clients an alternative to e-fencing but my starts have not been as bomb-proof as yours.

  • those dogs are so cute n obedient when u dropped the leash though

  • that dog is gunna get fat with all those treats lol. n i cant practice walking in my house with a pitbull haha

  • This video was so helpful! After practicing in the house for a little while, we went outside, and it was like I was walking a different dog. They stayed by me, and when they pulled I would call their name, turn the other way then drop a treat. I wish I would have watched this video years ago. I have never tried something that worked so quickly! Thanks!

  • So click? Like the clickers for dogs? I just adopted a 6 month old Basenji Shepherd mix, and he is very hyper. He jumps on you, and pulls the leash; and I have to constantly pull him around because he wants to be ahead of me. He's full of energy, and I mainly got him for a good companion; and a walking/jogging buddy. He's already attached to me, and we have a connection; but he seems to think he can do what he pleases.

How do I go about this? The walking and jumping?

  • @PossumFang To stop the jumping, what worked for our puppy was to first teach him the sit command. Then, anytime you want to pet him make him sit first, then reward him with a lot of praise. Also, anytime he seems very hyper and crazy, just turn away from him and fold your arms. This will teach him that when he gets to crazy play time ends. After he calms down a little you can resume play time. The most important thing is that you are firm and consistent.

  • @PossumFang Well as for walking u saw the video just practice,, for jumping u can do like this:when he jumps on you, say noo!!!-grab his forward paws and step on his backward paws(oc don't step on his paws like mad , just enough that he realize that u are not allowing that kind of behavior,I already saw that u receive a good replay but just in case that didn't work well try this method

  • the bigger dog is not 'calm and relaxed' and is not 'doiing what it likes to do, looking around and sniffing' at all, it looks at you for a treat all the time

  • @Alexus095 Yes, but, by looking at her, he is not pulling, :)

  • I tried everything and he just sat there and tried running back into the house. Lazy dog....

  • Lol "Train your dog not to bark". The dog is barking the whole time in the background. lol.

  • Brilliant! I just got a new puppy, and I'm excited to teach her to be a "good dog"...my 8 year old dog is full of bad habits so I'm hoping to break those while training the new dog. Wish me luck!

  • Wow thanks so much

  • How long does this process take with an older dog?

  • your dogs arent even that good on the walk because they only look for food the proper training is a metal slip or prong coller using these properly has no negitive effect. Using these simply simulates the mothers nip on the neck so the dog naturally knows what he did was wrong.make your dog hold a sit before you walk untill you release him then say heel if your dog pulls give a quick pop and say No heel dogs will quicly catch on when your finished walking sit them and say okay and give freedom=]

  • this was very helpful for us. i likedthis video. We also allow our dog to walk on a relaxed retractable leash, and whenever i see him going ahead of me, i simply say, "With me", and he stops, or slows down until he is at my side, and he remainsthere for the duration or until something distracts him, like another dog. BTW, I noticed that you walk like a dancer. I used to be a dancer at one time iin my life. ONE TIME...lolol eons ago. lol. Thanks again for the video.

  • nice tutorial, thanks for sharing!

  • Too cute! Hope you'll watch our video that's featured on our channel right now. It's about dog walking!

  • Give them leash, they chase a car and they die. Even with a trained dog, never give him too much leash that would get him hurt. Remember, a certain car might get his attention that no other car has.

  • their following you because your giving free food duh

  • @localSickened That's the point. Food reinforces the behavior.

  • omg that is so smart how did i not think about that?! does it work without a clicker?

  • This has helped my puppy greatly, but what do you do if they work for the treat, but once they earn it, completely lose focus. or when they decide that they want to stop and sniff and absolutely refuses to move forward even when called?

  • Wish every dog owner could see this vid.

  • wow this worked on my dog!!!!!! keep making dog training videos!!!!!!!!!

  • i love this video

  • I am a volunteer dog walker @ the local dogs home, I tried this out on a jack russel type i think I managed to get a loose leash for a few mins of a 30 minute walk, it's incredibly hard work, especially with the majority of dogs at the home as they are so ill disciplined, having been strays or neglected... can this method work on staffordshires, and other larger more strong minded dogs? your vids are very helpful, thanks for sharing your knowledge

  • What do you do when the dog is not interested in the treat?

  • @a781993 buy him one that he might like

  • Nice choke chain and a couple of sharp pulls on the leash. If that does not work. Lift the dog up by the leash until his toe nails just leave the ground. He will get it.

  • and how do you explain that he is not going to eat from the ground?eat from strangers , eat poison and so on ? thanks for all the videos

  • Just what I was looking for. Excellent video madam.

  • @em2jeff just run along side your dog? go there pace and get some exersize

  • what is the click she keeps talking about? is that the treat???

  • @actafewl The click means clicking a clicker. You can buy them at pet stores usually for under 5 dollars. They are very useful and many trainers use them.

  • I dont have so much of a problem of my dog pulling ahead anymore, i have a problem with my dog falling too far behind that i just keep walking and drag her momentarily. also, she seems to keep switching sides to walk next to me on. what am i doing wrong?

  • Wow, thanks! I was wondering where to start!

  • Nice video

  • Hey, i tried your method, and finally got some results, i have a small 2 years old fox terrier, and he is better behaved, however, i seem to be stuck on his progression. He is better than before, but he still pulls the leash, i'am constantly calling him back (and he comes). Should i try different treats or something?

  • Thank you very much :D now I can take Momo for walks :)

  • tried this with my dogo argentino and it worked :) well not 100% but we are on the right track

  • awesome video!!! love it!!

  • this video is awesome........

  • 3:20 is awesome

  • im working on leash with my 5 year old lab hes getting better hes used to running off leash in the woods

  • fuck this is too much

  • You are a cool trainer and the best one I have seen so far

  • my dog is too big and i can`t stop him from going forward :-/

  • This video was very helpful.I love dogs but they never listen to me.

I'm going to try the techniques you pointed out on this video.

You have very lovely dogs Ms.Thank you

  • Great video, very comprehensive. Re: commenters w/ dog that sits and won't walk, i had that problem with my chihuahua. She would not take treats outside so we practiced inside but she would not walk on her leash at all outside. I read the Dog whisperer's advice which was to carry/drive the dog a few blocks away & then walk home. That worked a little bit but my dog still would not budge when we tried to leave the apt on foot. What finally worked was a version of the "ignore" technique that i saw

  • westmetal17, you can use some of their kibble for training sessions, or cut down on their kibble a few tablespoons to compensate for the treats. You can also make your own healthier treats by cooking boneless meat like chicken, pork, or beef.

  • is there such thing as "too much treat training" for one day? i dont want to make my pom fat or overwhelm him. Any tips?

  • i know all dogs are different, but how long does it take a dog to learn this

  • i know all dogs are different, but how long does it usually take a dog to learn this.

  • @westmetal17 It may take a little while. It's one of those lessons you have to keep repeating daily for a few weeks or so. Just keep with it! It'll get there eventually. :D

  • Its sound like katy perry <3 XOXOXOX

  • please help mee! ive tried this method on my dog and he was doing fine but now hes back to his ways of pulling! he is a 9 month old siberian husky and he is soo strong! my hands hurt and burn when he pulls! today i walked him and i got soo mad! if you can please help!

  • the person in the mirror is creeping me out 2:01

  • @AlfieJ06 good catch..i missed that my first time through

  • @AlfieJ06 good catch..i missed that my first time through

  • @AlfieJ06 i think its a guy with ba mask and glasses

  • @AlfieJ06 i think its a dog

  • @AlfieJ06 omg

  • @theGagarianplanet I know right!

  • @AlfieJ06 Oh my god that is creepy! I just saw it before bed... Thanks...

  • If I could get my little TFT Zoey to do this..... I would be sooooooooo happy!! You give great tips and I will start practicing inside first, then we willl try the back and forth thing....then maybe we will go for a walk in a totally different direction. Right now the only time she does not pull is on the part of the walk in where we are near a busy street and I think that she is only was good then because she is fearful of the big cars and noise. Glad I was able to find your video :)

  • Does anyone have any tips on a dog that doesn't like treats while walking? Our pup will take them at first but soon (3-5 pieces) shes coughing on them and what looks like not even chewing them. she just wants to move on and sniff. I've tried standing and waiting for her to come back which has helped but the leash is still tight, she's just not dragging like a monster.

  • @jameskopacz Praise. Like, "Good Walkies!" I have a dog that dislikes toys, treats, human food treats. He's really difficult for a Golden Retriever! LOL But I can just give him praise or a 1 pat on the head and he excepts that as his "treat" or I say reward for doing what *I* want. :)

  • What do you do when your dog won't come and just sits instead of walk

  • hey why don't u and tab 289 team up?

  • I just yank the leash whenever my dogs pulled. They now behave while on leash.

  • Thank you very much for this tips ;) I like your Nice Ass tho ;)

  • I think its better to dont make any noise or not patting your lag while your dog is pulling, because attention to your dog in this time means for the dog "NICE".

Maybe its better to only switch the direction in this time when he is pulling.

  • these techniques really work,my Border Collie walks nicely after 2 days, but heres a tip . When the dog starts understanding, dont give a treat EVERY time, keep it guessing.

  • I have a BIG problem with my new puppy. he is a 5 month old miniature poodle, and he bucks in his harness. he rather have me go with him then him going with me. what do I do? pull him along :{ plz help me Kiko<3

  • @TeddyPupWolf hey, ok dont give up on your dog, keep it close to you and have a short leash , like a really short one, or roll a leash up. make him/her walk behind you and repeat this everyday. Remember your dog needs at least 2 hours of walk everyday. just take cellphones with you and do buisness calls and everything

  • @KehJay kk thx ill try that :) ty very much

  • What if you have a dog that walks behind you instead besides you.

  • thanks for your video work! I have a 1 yr. old rescue pet who is not leashed trained, and she needs to manage Midtown Manhattan, soon. I will try to gain her confidence and co-operation by rewarding what she does right. peace

  • that dosent work

  • ok this is very clear , but i have a question, @ what point you stop treating your dog and this behavior will be natural, i dont want my dog to be waiting for a treat that eventualy is not going to come

  • @MarioRocket you dont always use treats !! that has to be clear, treat every other exersice that you do ;)

  • Great tip throwing treats back. I'm trying it and it works much better than having them looking for the treat your hand. Thank you so much!

  • I have a problem though. My 3 month puppy doesnt respond to my treats, she completely ignores them and pulls along. I tried taking her on walks before her dinner to get her to accept my treats but it doesnt work. Its only on walks does she do this, along with not responding to her name/recall/commands whatsoever. Its VERY frustrating :(

  • @psChrystine Make half his daily food as part of his reward. If he's hungry, he'll listen.

Alternatively, your treats don't taste or smell good. See if he likes bacon or some kind of meat. Dogs turn into genius' once they realize there's good food to be won.

(Also note "human-food" treats are terrible for them... actually, they're ind of bad for us too but we live longer and don't notice their effects for decades.)

  • @psChrystine Some dogs respond more to toys than they do leashes. Try practicing walking on a leash in the backyard until she gets used to it. Or, you could try to switch the brand of dog treats that you use. Sometimes dogs respind more to affection, so reward her with lots of love and praise. :) As for the name, get her outside alone and call her name. If she looks at you then reward her. But reward her AS SOON as she looks at you. Then start with the sit command. Then lie down. The stay. :)

  • Great video but I have the opposite problem. My puppy stalls when we go on walks. He just stops and sits on his bum. What's the solution?

  • @scentmarketingcanada have treats with you when you go on a walk. If he sits down call him to you and when he comes he gets a treat.
