A landrover is not just a 4WD, it's definitely not a SUV (PUKE), or a suburban chariot. A Landrover needs to be used for the purpose it was designed for, going where other vehicles can't, whether that be because of lack of ability, or fear of scratching the metallic paintwork, or getting mud on the kid leather upholstery or what ever. In a Landrover you just go there, maybe slowly, roughly, cold or hot, you just do it.
@strassenapoteker00 Agreed a Unimog is a far more capable purpose built 4WD than a Landrover, and if I could afford one I'd have one, but, they're built for a different place in the market, medium weight vehicle all terrain, don't see to many Unimogs on Australian country roads, I think our Army has some, however I still see a shed load of old Landies.
I haveS1,S2A,S111,S111V8,86RangeRover and S111 SWB all in the family and others ive been silly to sell.Ive also owned a 1986 5 speed Lada Niva brilliant and loved a 1981 Jeep Cherokee that is brilliant on road and more than capable 4wding.
saying all that my favourites are still LandRovers older the more challenging and they allways get you home except my S1 107" it had sat under a tree for 30yr and went My restored S111 was hit it crumpled like a new car Im gd and LR stay in one piece, rip s111.
You just have to appreciate the Land Rover! Only the best of the classics survive virtually unchanged. That is probably the only car still in production and demand these days...
I think people are too passionate when talking about cars, especially if they talk about the brand they own, the only way to judge a car is with time, and in this category of cars there is a common that you see almost all the time on TV and on countries where you depend on 4X4, and as far I have seen are Toyota's, Nissan's and Land Rovers, that tells me something , just look for videos in the middle east and even terrorist.
Amazing machine, hope it goes on forever! I hope there is one in the motoring Hall of Fame!
I like Japanese cars, but all the people who are spitting over Landies, let me have a question. Why is that I never see any 70's-80's Land Cruisers? I see many old Landies every single day..
bag of shit, top to bottom faults that are still there nearly 60 years on, leaky roofs, aluminium and steel together that causes a chemical reaction, cramped cabs and poor workmanship, give me a four track or a hilux any day...............
landrover is not a car, its a way of life. sure they have faults, they dont leak oil they are merely marking thier territory......they save on aiconditioning by having extra vents aka panel gaps......
yes jeep inspired the landrover. jeep was a superb vehicle no one can deny it but landrover took it so much further. thats why it means so much to people
@jumbodoug I'm worried that I think I now need to marry you....
Only ever owned Landies in my family since I can remember. Learnt to drive in a Series 1 disco as well. When I finish my degree, it wont be a BMW or Audi, it'll be a Defender 90!
I know the marvel of this car is how simple it is, this is a trully off roader car, but if you live anywear near a city or a jungle dont buy it, cuz you will hate, just a some months ago i was about to buy a 2010 defender "fire" and i can see its potential out of the tarmac but it will be hell to live with it on a city, not just cuz the suspencion is as hard as wood, or have 90º seats, manuel windows, and more much more, but the turning radio! you cant du a U turn o 6 lanes its just terrible
Well...I'm now driving my 4th Land Rover; they've saved my life, forded chest-deep rivers in Iceland, earnt me money, looks stunning, rescued my staff...and members of the public, they've inspired my clients, and 'wow'd kids at remote exped demonstrations. Love 'em or hate 'em but what Hammond says here is right...except one thing...fast? Mine current Td5 is a standard CSW model but can cruise at 85mph. That's after descending a 1 in <2 gradient in Scotland. A Jeep wont do all that.
How can anyone compare a new Toyota to an old series one Land Rover, the old Land Rover's are far superior right through to series 1, 2, 2A, 2B, 101, lightweights, and 3 vehicles. Sorry but you can keep all that modern electrical 4x4 plastic rubbish - Mr Toyota!
Why does topgear not ever compare to a jeep? 1948 was far after the jeep in 1941 at the first of WW2. I don't unlike the land rover, but they ignore the inspiration for it from WW2. The original ones even looked like a Willys Jeep. They compared a land rover to a Cadillac.. That is not a real 4x4..
@bfrance2002 however the landrover is better many more variants and the classiest vheical in the world unlike a horrible a jeep where u just think oo people in that are just fat american genrals where as landys has nice old farmers and montain rescuers and the horrible gran cherakie is driven around by horrible footballers wives and mums where as the landy and range rover are driven by people who actually want to go offroad
@roryforham - That is what you need for "off roading", "classiest ". I do not hate the land rover, but I will say, where I live, we all use our jeeps every day off road. I live 1 mile off the highway. In the winter no one makes it to my house without 4 wheel drive. I have many dirt roads between me and work. Although a lot of jeeps never see the dirt or mud or snow, mine do. I bet many Landrovers never see the dirt in England either.
@Allandrover - You ever owned jeep? I am not saying that Land Rover is bad, I am just saying that I would like to see a caparison. I have 4 jeeps, all over 100k miles and 2 of those over 200k miles.
@bfrance2002 you are right the jeep was inspiration, but the reason they never compare to it is becaus the willys jeep was inspiration not a real 4x4 it was the basis of the land rover and the land rover is the basis of todays great vehicles. of course jeep deserve some credit but the willys jeep is the forgotten hero and landrover still make good cars whereas jeep make shit cars these days because landrove used the willys jeep and jeep diddent.
I have a 2002 Defender 110 and a 93 Toyota Bandeirante (Old Landcruiser version) and guarantee if toyota still produce the Bandeirante it would sell so good here in my country as well the defenders... The Defender has a bad bad drive position, wich the toyota has a large and wider driving room, both are great 4x4, I see the toyota as the better option for the extreme off-road by its shorter chassis (in my case). But for long travel no matter the road, Defender rules.
Hi there mate - I don't mean to be a "know it all" but the Landcruiser 70 series is still being produced, albeit somewhat different looking to the original. If you go to toyota's web-site in Australia or New Zealand, you'll see the lineup. :D
I'm a bit burnt on his mere brush-off of the VW Beetle (never expected such a cold shoulder from the Hamster for the People's Car... only takes up space my ass...), but a very moving tribute to the Rover!
the land rovers in america suck ass. im guessing its the rovers with gas engines that have problems because all i hear are horror stories about mechanical problems with them here.... im guessing the diesel rovers are the rock solid ones
2 of my next door neighbors and my uncle have had horrible problems with theirs. my uncles blew a head gasket at only 55,000 miles although land rover did replace the engine he immediately sold it after that happened. one of my neighbors had horrendous electrical problems with it and sold it after 1 year of ownership. my other neighbor had the same story with the electrical and sold it after a year and a half.... i guess we all have different luck... or is it just the car. who knows
well about 10 years offroading, had hi-lux's, sj's, vitaras and im a mechanic and fix the fubard old sheds, and the realy good p38's that fall to bits, the freelanders that go thru head gaskets every 25000miles
anyway lets see how long tata have lanny for before thay get sick of them
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its wank car, the doors fall in half because thay used steel bolts in alli doors, you can fit your hand thru the gaps in the doors, thay rust, leak oil for fun and have loads of electrical problems, and new landys are the same, get a toyota!!!!!!!!!!
Is absolutely right (except as the doors)... these are the problems of a land rover, but. if you see the video and realize you will notice why we prefer to have a Land Rover and not a toyota... but if you like Toyotas go and buy one and enjoy it. I never said that cars are bad. I just prefer a Land Rover !!!
get a toyota??..plastic shit that break if you go off a pavement in them?..lol..i have a range rover 3.9 v8 and have seen theese jap artificial 4x4s,leaving plastic crap all over the tracks,,lol..get a toyota...haahah..get a life!..ahahahha..if it wansnt for landrover your 4x4 people carriers wouldnt be here,as thats all they are...
The Japanese were not permitted to build cars right after WWII for some time and thats why technology lagged behind well into the '60s. Also horrible road conditions at the time meant that the cars built were more for off road rather than highway driving so there's not point in restoring them cause they won't be practical in todays traffic. But I do still see Toyotas from the 50s, and thats a Landcruiser.
Where do you live? I think the land cruisers from the 50s are the best ones that were made, especially in respect to character. But I have to respectfully disagree to them not being practical. There are plenty of S1 Landrovers driving around today, and those were made with farmers in mind! Don't get me wrong though, I'm not hating on cruisers. Not in the least bit.
I live in Japan where the farmers aren't the ones owning Landcruisers but instead the rich folks have them cause today they're too expensive (some are even labeled as Lexus) and with leather, wood and electronics, the owners are too afraid to take them offroad even though they're totally capable of the offroad. But you're right the ones from the '50s are the best, but i like the 80s series cause they're built the good old way yet you can still buy them new today.
@suzuki0milk the first three letters of your choice describe the car entirely. If you want history, dependability, and enjoy the little repairs here and there which makes you part of a huge crowd of people who enjoy the same issues, then go buy a landy. You want to sit high and mighty on your own in a corner thinking how much better than everyone else you are, go buy a toy.........
@suzuki0milk for someone that doesn't have a big wallet and just uses their car to go to work and back or pick up kids from school or go to the grocery store and back, a toyota is perfect, their reliable, cheap and well built, but for someone that loves their car more then their wife would prefer a land rover because all european cars are built with soul and passion, toyotas are built to be good cars for every day drivers, but any real car lover knows the difference
