Not many commercials can literally cause young boys to hit adolescence, but when I was growing up and saw the woman in the purple swimsuit pull her shirt off, I had officially become a man, as did many guys from that generation.
This commercial is ingenious on a lot of levels. Pay particular attention to these lyrics: "Grab a stick, pull it out." If you were to break this down into sound "phonemes" and re-translate into written English, you would get "Grab HIS DICK, pull it out." Yes, the gum curving into a phallic shape as they "pop it in" their mouths is suggestive, but they underscore this with the lyrics. I wonder how much more gum they sold by insinuating that chewing it would get you more sex?!
I like when the chick with the big tits takes her shirt off in slo-mo........just wish she would "take a sniff......pull it out......taste is gonna move her when I pop it in her mouth" ;-)
vidman1976, I noticed that too. At first I was questioing that it was a 1981 ad, thinking the jingle couldn't possibly have been used for so long. But when you hear the ending, its like...oh ya.
I'm assuming the 1976 in your name is the year you were born, which makes us the same age, so 1981 would've been a little fuzzy yet.
Who knew chewing gum with your friends could be so fun?
I beileve these commercials are the reason we all fold the stick of gum on our tongues when we "pop it in our mouths." It's such a distinctive, elegant way to put a stcik of gum in your mouth, when it would make more sense to bite down on the piece to cut it in half, so to speak. But these commercials just made us all do the "folding" thing to look sexy like these 80s folks!
I had not seen this commercial in well over twenty years, but at the 2 second mark I remembered what was to come at 0:04. That rack made a huge impression on me:)
bloody oath it has, i soooo didnt take notice of that ad as i was only into the jingle, but now that you bought it up and seeing her take that shirt of..........oh god damn :) we had sum real lookers back in the 80s havnt we? we need THAT
the 4 to 5 second mark is why I remember this video as a kid. I do think the date on this commercail is wrong though because I would have been 7 when it aired and I don't think at 7 I would have remembered boobs.
I still don't get the sexual suggestions here since they're fully clothed and water skiing, and since the song has a country beat to it, but I guess if you haven't sucked the big one in a long time, everything can be interpreted sexually. I just took 2 loads today, and I wish they tasted like juicy fruit instead of rancid seawater mixed with bleach and pancake syrup like these guys. But shoving it down your throat and making it coat your tonsils generally helps because you never taste it.
HAHAHA!!!pull it up, pull it out, the taste is going to move you when you pop it in your mouth???? Subliminal sexual messages?? Goes right through you? Hahaha...
This is probably the reason why it ran for so long-- it had such lasting appeal. I remember seeing this pop up from time to time, years later: well past the mid-eighties, when I was in high school.
I remember watching this commercial version...I think it was the best one (energetic and fun) out of all the Juicy Fruit series. Heck I'd buy a pack after watching this! :)
I don't know about that... didn't the Valley Girl phase change the vocabulary of the 80s? And rap and hip hop both definitely existed in a slightly different form.
I think what's change is our perception of those days...
every young generation on in their teens and twenties think they are going tot ake over america. But the truth is the only ones who take over are the rich. Everyone else, the things they like, get swept asside so the entire money marketing machine can start all over again.
So those were normal kids that spoke "normal?" What made them so "normal?" Was it because they weren't black? Or was it because there was no "god awful rap or hip hop music?" Or both. Just curious.
As a black person I' like to mention that curtis blow and africabambata, began alot of the rap movement in the late 70's. Secondly, i love how peole think black people didnt emerge on earth until the 1990's/ We been here since the beginning and we aint goin nowhere my white brother.
and did even gum commercial's were a bit risque! did you see that woman take off her shirt at the beginning and it totally was focused on her chest instead of her face
@Davez621 Will rap and hip hop music is indeed terrible these days. But you know that rap and hip hop came about in the 80s and back then it wasn't bad. Of course, it did become terrible as years went by.
@Davez621 Look what you got started here! I'm not the bigest fan of rap music and ebonics myself, .. but, really, what did it have to do with this comercial here, huh ?
yeah...I remember it saying "the taste the taste the taste is gonna move yaaaa." They must've shown this commercial for many years cause I was born in 1980 and remember this commercial!
WOW,it's been a long time since i have heard that song, they called it juicy fruit but it was more like a spoonful of sugar, takes me back to better time's

Didn't they have a local Australian version of this ad at some point? I remember growing up in the 80s, the tune was very familiar to me even though I only ocassionally visited the US. I think our version was slightly different... it might have gone "Juicy Fruit will get you goin'" ?

ofcourse the rich are the ones who take over, that is a tautology.
But clearly "the rich" of the 1950's are not "the rich" of 2009, thus the drastic difference in the popular culture of the two eras.
