They would return the cats to the colony after neutering. They would take the young kittens to be adopted. My experience is that about 80% of kittens are adopted. Also there are an increasing number of no-kill shelters. Average life of an outdoor cat is about three years.

This looks like my house :) I'm currently in the process of socializing three feral kittens so that I can get them properly adopted out. They came up and ate with me sitting near the food today, which is quite a step for them. Pretty soon I can start offering food with my hand. Once they take food from my hand, it's a short step to coming in the house. Had great success with this last year :) Yes, I am a crazy cat lady (and right proud of it!)

If these truly are feral kittens, your local shelter should be the LAST place to send them. Feral cats unfortunate enough to find themselves at ANY animal control, or "humane" society are killed outright. If you care about these little ones, you should trap, neuter, and re-release them back to your yard/enviroment...just because they are wild doesn't mean they don't have the right to live. Hopefully things are different in the Netherlands where you live than here. In my county, stray cats that are unadoptable and feral cats are immediately put to death.

strays = targets , no shit!! i shoot stray cats they have no place in nature and kill my pheasants and rabbits so i have no problem turning kitties inside out with my 22-250, i do like indoor cats but when they are free to roam on my property i try to shoot them before te dogs chew them up , its a real mess when the dogs get ahold of a live kitty even worse when they fight over it, dogs playing tug of war with a kitty is a nasty sight so death by a bullet is quite painless compared to that!
Yeah, they are feral alright. You can see it in their eyes as they cautiously eat the food. I wouldn't say an evil eye, but it sure is the eyes of mistrust and maybe anger.
You did the right thing having them picked up. That way they can be fixed and on their way to find a home hopefully.
SpenceDMann, they did the right thing ONLY if they know for sure that their shelter is a no-kill shelter. If not, then these kittens were just fattened up for slaughter. Sadly, lots of well-intentioned people have naive assumptions that when animal control gets involved they will take the feral cats, tame them, and find them good homes. It simply does not happen. Animal control does not have the time nor the resources needed to tame feral kittens.
Feral cats/kittens are NOT "fixed"...they are immediately killed, having been deemed unadoptable. What works humanely with feral cat populations is Trap, Neuter, Release.

The NATIVE wildlife in an area invaded by feral cat colonies with be adversely affected to varying degrees of severity. They are harmful to both predator and prey alike. This looks like my house :) I'm currently in the process of socializing three feral kittens so that I can get them properly adopted out. They came up and ate with me sitting near the food today, which is quite a step for them. Pretty soon I can start offering food with my hand. Once they take food from my hand, it's a short step to coming in the house. Had great success with this last year :) Yes, I am a crazy cat lady (and right proud of it!)

If these truly are feral kittens, your local shelter should be the LAST place to send them. Feral cats unfortunate enough to find themselves at ANY animal control, or "humane" society are killed outright. If you care about these little ones, you should trap, neuter, and re-release them back to your yard/enviroment...just because they are wild doesn't mean they don't have the right to live. Do you know for a fact that your animal shelter is a no-kill shelter? If not, then you just sentenced these feral kittens to death.
Hopefully things are different in the Netherlands where you live than here. In my county, stray cats that are unadoptable and feral cats are immediately put to death.

strays = targets , no shit!! i shoot stray cats they have no place in nature and kill my pheasants and rabbits so i have no problem turning kitties inside out with my 22-250, i do like indoor cats but when they are free to roam on my property i try to shoot them before te dogs chew them up , its a real mess when the dogs get ahold of a live kitty even worse when they fight over it, dogs playing tug of war with a kitty is a nasty sight so death by a bullet is quite painless compared to that!

Yeah, they are feral alright. You can see it in their eyes as they cautiously eat the food. I wouldn't say an evil eye, but it sure is the eyes of mistrust and maybe anger.
You did the right thing having them picked up. That way they can be fixed and on their way to find a home hopefully.

SpenceDMann, they did the right thing ONLY if they know for sure that their shelter is a no-kill shelter. If not, then these kittens were just fattened up for slaughter. Sadly, lots of well-intentioned people have naive assumptions that when animal control gets involved they will take the feral cats, tame them, and find them good homes. It simply does not happen. Animal control does not have the time nor the resources needed to tame feral kittens.

Feral cats/kittens are NOT "fixed"...they are immediately killed, having been deemed unadoptable. What works humanely with feral cat populations is Trap, Neuter, Release.
