Gene Wilder...pure genius, and seems such a sincere and genuine fellow. Yes, he is THE WILLY WONKA. Depp did good, but no, doesn't hold a candle to Mr. Wilder's performance. I would have to say my favorite role Gene played was Rabbi Avram Belinski in "The Frisco Kid" with Harrison Ford. He SMOKED that roll.
What bothers me most about Mr Wilder's career is that there's never been a film that was just about him, something that gives him a part utilizing his talents, humor and outlook on life?.
I can easily see a film about elderly man who is an Alzheimer's patient or someone who has dementia trying to cope with his family & the humorous experience's?
I don't know...He might take that the wrong way but...
Ah, to see a man who has truly lived life. Such pain, such experience. Living out his twilight years writing about his life, and the lives of his characters. Very in touch with himself. I feel he can impart a great deal of wisdom to us all.
I came here to watch a Gene Wilder interview, but ended up becoming totally blown away by the wonderful guy interviewing him! Best interviewer EVER! Soft spoken, simple questions, and then immediately backing off to let Gene actually speak, doesn't rush or interrupt or "finish his sentences". Ernie you ROCK! Thank you for hosting an amazing interview!
One of the most pleasant 15 mins i have spent in a long long while, you come away feeling better about life for some reason, at least i did anyway.........
I saw a PBS special back in the late 80's, it was an hour of the best of Gene Wilder. It was absolutely one of the funniest things I have ever seen. It kept me laughing from beginning to end. I wish I could find a copy of it, but I can't even remember what they titled it, maybe The Comedy of Gene Wilder? Anyway, he's definitely one of the greatest.
@grady876876 Patch Adams would be mouch better with Gene, although this doesn't mean any disrespect to Williams, who is also a great actor but Gene has something unique as an actor, more finesse I'd say.
Wow - I'm staggered at his honesty in this interview given his position. It'd be so much easier for him to say nice things about the remakes and his relationship with Gilda but no; he's completely honest about them at the risk of estranging some fans and former colleagues. I couldn't agree more with him about the Young Frankenstein/Chocolate Factory remakes. Some things just do not need redoing. It's greedy and takes away from the original. What an unpretentious man - what a pleasant surprise.
Wow. I have seen his movies and to see what he is like now is like finding an empty bag of jelly beans. You can tell that at one time there were jelly beans, but now there is a sack of empty promises.
The day this man passes on, it will be an extremely sad day, especially for anyone that truly enjoyed his work in theater, movies, or his books. truly a magical genuine special man. i have ALWAYS been a fan of Gene, and Mel Brooks of course, they were a great duo.

oh no i think he's still got a way to go, yeah there's still that twinkle in his eyes he and Christopher walken are my all time favs,( comedic i'm talking) not straight, my best altime acting ability is Daniel Day Lewis, but gene wilder is magic he has a magic presence about him, long live gene, king gene
Gene is one of the best, even his not so good films are good (to me anyway)! I wish Willy Wonka was not remade the first is a piece of cinema perfection the same can be said about Young Frankenstein! As someone that is learning the process of screen writing, I have a list of films that I'd love too remake, not because they were bad films, just not done (in my opinion) as good as they could have been (either poor dialog or simply miss cast). I am a fan of Johnny Depp.
The Frisco Kid, Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder one of my favorite movies. Sad that he doesn't do movies anymore. I believe the remake of Willy Wonka was so-so, at least Depp didn't even attempt to BE Gene Wilder's Wonka. I'm just tired of movies having 85% of it be cgi.
excellent. thank you for asking such good questions with out belittling nor, offending. it's so rare to see a good interviewer do it right. again, excellent.
I haven't watched the new "Wonka" movie for the same reason (too dark) and probably never will. I'm not a big fan of remaking movies anyway. It's as if the original wasn't good enough. They do the same with classic songs and I hate that! My uncle took my brother and I to see "..Wonka..." back in the early 70's when it first came out and that's a memory I'll always cherish. Young Frankenstein was great too and I wish they'd just leave it alone.
@celebrityimpressions I agree one hundred precent about remakes (I still haven't forgive Madonna for redoing American Pie) I disagree with your analysis of the new Wonka movie being too dark. I say the old one is MUCH darker (remember the scene when they're on the boat and those frightening images flash on the walls of the tunnel?). While this is just my opinion, I also think that we have lost many subtleties in films making the new one more overtly dark while the old one was much more nuancey.
One of the most beatiful men in the world, inside and out. Such a kind heart. God I would do anything to marry a man like him. I'm way too young of course, and he's married. But if I were older, well, that's a different story. I love him so much! I listen to Pure Imagination nonstop. He is a genius, too. No one can beat his ideas. Love always <3
That sweet, wonderful man. When he talks like that I keep getting teary-eyed, don't know why really. I love him, just love him. Yes, am a fangirl, have a crush on Wilder, will never regret it :)
Wouldn't mind meeting him.

nostalgiajunkie70 9 months ago 2
@nostalgiajunkie70 I think he was reserving his true thoughts about Willy Wonka (the new one) and I am glad he didn't see it.
I protested by not seeing it either. I think that is a pox on the house of Tim Burton - leave the true original great movies alone.
