Yves Montand was welcomed in the Soviet Union.
@Golonpo Of course,the official Party line in Bulgaria was to promote the home,socialistic culture in all its forms - singers were generally not allowed to perform in English ,but Western songs used to be covered in Bulgarian language,I can show you some examples if you are interested.I hope this answers your question.
@Straccio So, the "Iron curtain" was not so "iron". I can tell you other names like Demis Russos and Mireille Mathieu. It seems to me that the Party had good taste for music if it allowed those singers, but cut the "heavy metal" crap. Otherwise, why some singers are allowed, others not?
@Golonpo Mireille Mathieu was very popular in the Soviet Union where she had some TV appearances as well,she was also a known name in Bulgaria. Demis Russos was in Bulgaria in the early 1990s ,I don't have information if he had been to the country during socialism. The Party didn't have much problem with French or Italian singers singing love ballads but as you said heavy metal was not welcomed,which does not mean it was not listened to by young people.
Respond to this video... They had their ways of obtaining records.In general,there was often a discrepancy between what media at that time promoted and what some people really liked. For example the Alen Mak Political Song Festival broadcasted on TV every year was not something audience watched enthusiastically or cared about much...
