  • my cockateil died thanksgiving day and my hubby got me 2 new babys they are sooooo sweet i am learning every day

  • also when u grabed it i was like your gonna get bite then u dont and u say its born fed i was like ohhhhh my moms cockatiel if u even look at it it goes Ka Ka Ka Kr Kr

  • i HATE cockatiels my mom has one and its right next to my parakeet and my bird gets so anyoing becouse it makes a anooying noise so my bird spits seads at it :D

  • please make a video about breeding cockatiels

  • @AnimalExchange and oh if the bird is giving you gentle nibles its showing you a sign of affection and trying to clean you. My bird does this and yes he goes after jewerely or silver chains. Your lucky your bird doesnt wake you up churping at 6am each morning.

  • @AnimalExchange look very closely at the birds cheeks light orange or red is a female bright orange or red is male

  • Not sure if I want a cockatiel or a parakeet. :/

  • I am raising 3 baby cockatiels and I want to be ready for when they get older. I know they grow rapidly and I've done research but what is the appropriate age to start giving them normal cockatiel mix and when do I stop giving them their formula? What I have read is that you must give them the formula until 8 weeks old but I just wanted to be sure.

  • @Hayleedx Weaning a baby bird is quite tricky. I have had cockatiels that weaned completely by 5 weeks and others that kept begging until 9 weeks. Feel the crop before you hand feed and you can tell if they have been eating seed or pellets, then watch what they do after you feed since the warm food in the crop often will stimulate them to start eating other things..And above all remember, if they are not eating, nothing comes out the other end..

  • Hello i got a female cockatiel around 20 days back . should i allow my cockatiel to get out of the cage ? i fear it may get away and will not enter the cage plz help..! It sings in early morning and vocalises different sounds. please help..!

  • Because the Tiel's food is dry, you might want to substitute it for some moist food like fruits and vegetables. Just be sure that they aren't ones that absorb the pesticides which can cause a lot of health problems for birds, or are ones that make the birds sick by ingesting them. Desert animals can get their water from the food they eat, not just from the water dish. Please do your research.

  • Screw books, my grandma is obsessed with Tiels. Lmao. Just kidding, I've got until they are born and weaned so I'll look around for one. As Dnash said, you made some BIG mistakes, but, this helped.. Thank you. :) I'm getting my first from my grandmother, she loves them to death..

  • I was told by my cockatiel breeder and my vet to NOT offer them gravel and the 2 books I read said nothing of gravel either...hmmm.

  • @animalexchange1 the idea isnt that bad but you cant take away babies from their parents that early just to become tame birds.... you can also train them to get tame :)

  • @thehenry4422 the cockatiel should be 12weeks old or older, it isnt healthy for them too taken away from their parents before they are 8weeks. and you should ALWAYS buy 2 cockatiels, lonely birds wont be happy, you can goohle what could happen (sorry for bad english)

  • @LovelyMi2o11 We take most of our baby cockatiels from the parents at 3 weeks and then hand feed them for about 5 weeks. The result is a fabulously tame pet bird that does just fine with you as its' flock. If you decide to breed birds then you do need 2. To learn more about hand feeding, check the Animal Exchange youtube on handfeeding.

  • very helpful. :) thank you for the video

  • Aawweee, cute :) I can't wait to get mine, thanks for your tips.

  • Please Respond

Is it a good thing to buy a cockatiel while it is a baby.

    4 or 5 weeks old

    Please respond SOMEONE!!!!!!

  • @TheHeNrY4422 Wait until you are sure it is weaned which is usually around 8 weeks.

  • @TheHeNrY4422 The bird needs to be weaned. I don't know for sure what the exact age at which this is normal, but I got my Kevin at about 3 months old and she has been wonderful.

  • great video! thanks! but ive read that cockatiels are social animals and if they dont have another cockatiel to live with theyre going crazy..? is that true?

  • @LovelyMi2o11 We suggest one bird for a pet since then they consider you their flock and bond with you. If you are not going to be spending any time with them, then consider a male and female and breed babies for me to hand feed.

  • I have 2 cackateils

  • Good vid but thank goodness we now know gravel is bad and so is an all seed diet that you show. Remember, If they eat the right pellets alongs with some seeds and fresh veggies then you will never need a cuttlebone as well.

  • My cockatiel pepper just died today.. It was horrible and I just can't get over it.... Does anyone know what I should do?

  • @AwEs0meNeSs598 Maybe try and look for another one that looked like pepper??

  • @AwEs0meNeSs598 Buy a new one :)

  • lol the cockatiel is saying hoomin hoomin lets me go!! dont show my feets

  • Great video, thanks! I'd just like to let people know that if you want a well trained bird its best not to let them on your shoulder as they are asserting their dominance on you and as you can see, will bite at your ear lobes etc. which can hurt. I've read that on a fair few articles.

  • Caged birds DO NOT need grit. Very cute little cockatiel there. Looks like he/she has a lot of personality...

  • I just give my cockatiel and my budgies when they were alive, only crushed oyster shells and charcoal upon the advice of my vet. My cockatiel seldom eats the oyster shells, he will eat the cuttle bone and mineral block. My first budgie I didn't know any better and gave her grit. She got a cancerous tumor in her belly. So no more grit in my house for my birds. I;m just passing on what my bird vet told me.

  • Did I hear you say, give your bird gravel. No No, says my vet. They do not need gravel. In fact, I believe my first parakeet died from eating too much gravel and grit.

  • @Hockinggal For over 30 years, I have put a sprinkle of bird gravel on the floor of all my birds cages with no problem. They go down to eat it when they want to. If there is no food in the cage, just shells, then yes they will eat gravel out of desperation but I have never had any over eat if food was available. Wild birds always have gravel in their gizzard.

  • Oh, and out of curiosity, are Diamond Doves good pets?

  • @mouse264 Diamond Doves are very pretty little birds . They have a tendency to night frights so I moved mine out of the bed room to a room where it was quite all night.

  • Should I get a cockatiel? I'm usually good at taking care of rodents, and my brother had a parakeet (I ended up giving most of the care to the bird, or at least checking up on her) But other than that I have no experience in birdcare, but I had rodents for ages. I'm fairly busy but I have about 5 free hours every night (Not much of a social life lol, and only in high school) I love birds though, and the fact that they live maybe 30 years unnerves me but... Should I get a cockatiel?

  • @mouse264 Yes

  • great vid, but can i just put you right on one thing you can not just go in your garden and cut a tree branch for you bird cage YOU WILL KILL YOUR BIRD most tree branches are poisinous you have to have a branch from an apple tree for budgies and cockatiel.

  • I asked my exotics vet, and she said that grit for cockatiels can cause impaction in the intestine. It should be used very rarely, like once a year if that.

  • I love your videos and think you have great advice on birds. I always say, "Buy the most cage you can afford" but I think that cage looks fine as long as it gets plenty of outside time.

Personally I thing most birds should have pellets somewhere in their diet if not their exclusive diet. What are your thoughts?

And on the subject of avocado being bird cyanide please everyone remember that nonstick coating on your pans can easily kill birds if it gets to hot! Nonstick is useless anyways!

  • @CaptainLog Thank you for mentioning Teflon. Way too many birds have died from fumes from over heated nonstick pans Birds are really biological indicators. For a brochure about the issue, send a stamped self addressed envelope to: Ruth at Animal Exchange, 605 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, MD, 20850

  • @CaptainLog We sell pellets, Harrisons, LeFeber and Zupreem but my birds are on seed. I'll switch when boarding animals look better on pellets. I have no objection to offering them, with Harrisons being the most widely recommended by Vets in my area

  • isArtanisAzn ; it will be fine in your apartment ..... But if you are scared it may get hurt by fling around just get its wings cliped every 3 months ! so it should be fine in your apartment . : D

  • guys i MIGHT get a cockatiel..

but i live in a small apartment

is it good for the cockatiel? theres space for the cage n stuff, but the bird if it will be okay?

  • Cockatiels CANNOT eat anything we eat, avacado for example is toxic to your cockatiel. Also, if she just got that bird home she should let it go straight in its cage from the box on its own and leave it there (talking to it etc) for the first day to get used to it's new enviroment before bringing it out of the cage to play. As much as you want to bring it out and play with it, it's really important not to overwhelm your bird at first and let it come to you.

  • @fionafearon Yes cockatiels can eat anything you do except for avacado. Since their kidneys are different than ours, I also go easy on salt. If you have been following our videos, you know that I take pets home from my Pet Store, Animal Exchange, to do the videos. These are all animals that are handled daily and when they go home with their new owners, they settle in very quickly

  • I used to have a Cockatiel but it was Vicous !!!!!!!!

  • @bladeshark1 An unhappy cockatiel can be a bit of a problem. Clipping the feathers on the wing, talking calmly and wearing a light leather glove for protection will usually bring them around eventually. Don't forget to rud their ear with a circular motion while you are holding them against your chest. They love it.

  • my cage is like 15x bigger or more, and here in Finland they say that it's minimum for one bird

  • Please answer, i bought a male tiel 4 days ago and lately it's just been pacing around his cage on the floor and on the walls. Wth is he doing, also any tips on how to tame this guy?

  • @brianvelasquez

My cockatiel does this all the time. My cockatiel just wants attention, but if he bites you offer a towel on your hand to step up and he will learn, but after that give him millet. :) OPT to ADOPT

  • youtube.com/watch?v=qAyWD26z9kY

  • I've had a cockatiel for a few years and I never trained it and now it hates humans. Is it to late to train mine?

  • Need halp fast!!! I bought one n i had two before but diz one is kinda like a bby? Its a young one n it dosent move from the corner of the cage :( n hasent ate nothing!!! Im scare dnt want it to die berly bought it yesturday :(:(:(:( wat to doooo!? Heeelp how long would it star eating till he gets use to its new home ? N how long would dat take :(

  • @trex20894 Take him to an Avian vet Immediatley! if hes sitting on the bottom of the cage he is really sick and doesnt have long to live!

  • @Dnash777 dat wuz 6 day ago he started eating the second day n now he wont stop eating :) he wuz just getting uste to his new home :) thanx dough

  • aaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwww i have a cockitiels,bahaaaaa

  • those birds are stomping all over the place in the beginning

  • Actually you made a few Dire mistakes,Cockatiels cannot eat Anything that humans do, The cannot eat chocolate, chocolate is VERY POISIONOUS to birds,Avocado is also VERY POISONUS to birds.,onions or any vegetables that are not organic, Inorganic vegetables are loaded with pesticides that will store up in the birds body and everntually kill it. And perches with leaves on it is DEFINETLY NOT reccomended.many houseplants are also very poisionus to birds.

  • @Dnash777 Chocolate is a problem for dogs but my favorite amazon thrived on chocolate chip cookies. Avocado as I said is not safe for birds but more birds suffer from too little people food than too much variety in their diet. Since most pesticides will wash off, always wash anything you are feeding, just as you would for yourself. Tree branches are fine perches. Wash them if you wish. My house plants are nothing I want my birds in.

  • @Dnash777 Organic has not been proven to be better or safer. FRESH, nutritionally intact foods are what is important.

  • @Dnash777 omg Dnash777 so your suppose to be a expert looking at your videos your not so please keep your opinions to yourself

  • @Dnash777 on another note, with my birds ive learned threw exotic bird volunteering that when buying bird food i try getting a brand with the least amount of color dye and sunflower seeds (can cause fatty liver disease)

  • @Dnash777 Theobromine in chocolate is a problem for dogs, especially little dogs, but is not a problem for birds. One very longlived amazon parrot was wild about chocolate chip cookies. Washing fruits and veggies is always desirable for you and your pets but organic is nice but not necessary. Wash anyway.

  • @Dnash777 I could've swore that chickens are some form of bird...And my chickens adore avocados.

  • @Dnash777 Do not listen to the advice(councils) of this person on the food, even sunflower seeds must not be given, except for calopsittes living outside.

Cages(Goals) are very too small, and are needed horizontal bars.

Inform you about the forums, this woman knows it nothing.

  • @Dnash777 They can eat quite a lot of things actually, I occasionally give my cockatiel leftover vegetables and rice and she had a very healthy life and is currently almost 2 years old. And just to make clear, vegetables are NOT full of PESTICIDES or we all would have sued all inorganic companies right now. Why? Pesticides are as dangerous to us as it is for birds.

  • can u please make some more videos of cockatiels i love your videos!

  • I love watching her videos. Good info and loving manner.

  • I really wish I could hang out with you. You are soooo sweet. I would love to spend time with you and your sweet animals. My new little budgie likes your videos as well!! I have a quick question. I got my budgie at petco and I bought the same food they have been feeding them because I didn't want to make him feel too uncomfortable. The problem is the pallets looked colored! What brand of budgie food should I get him. I want him to be healthy and happy!

  • i have five cockatiels

  • how to get my bird not run away when i am to get to be it's friend.

  • OMG!!! i read the exact same book!!!

  • at 3:22 the little bird's head peeps out it looks cute

  • i dont get it on 01:51 when you say they spread them with their teeth???

  • i dont get the part 01:50

  • this is a really good video, very informative and great.

  • Thanks for the good info :)

  • Hi :) I will be getting a cockatiel soon and this video was very helpful :) Do you have any suggestions on how to make sure he/she doesn't get lonely when I'm out of the house for a few hours?

  • @AodamilerSquee

you can buy 2 cockatiels then they will never get bored

  • @AodamilerSquee We always suggest one for a pet, two for breeding. The absolute best pets are the single ones. Your bird will be happy to nap while you are out and glad to see you return.

  • that book helped me with my cockatiel so much,

  • im sure its 100% a girl

  • @bilaremix yea. if your talking about the one in the video. I think its a girl to. :)

cause as you probably already know. this one in the video has VERY visable bars on it's tail....

  • its a female check out my birds :)

  • Hi I had a cockatiel for a month now I he still won't stop biting! :( howcome people get to bet thier head without getting bitten? Any help? Buy a female playmate for him?

  • @SuperRetardedBros you should tame it. For to tame it you will need to read a book next to him for like 10 miniutes everyday or you can talk to it. The next step it putting ur hand inside his cage but holding a millet too, then he wil really want to eat that millet so he will come to ur hand, when he is on ur hand he will start trusting you slowly then you take the second step you pick him up and walk around with him for like 10-20 mins, then he should be like my birds check them out.

    Thanks!

  • @SuperRetardedBros Wear heavy gloves and stop responding when he bites. Birds love it when they can train you to say "ouch".

  • hi, i have 2 cockatiels and when ever i try to get them out of the cage they start flapping around.i dont want to hurt the bird.what can i do to get them out easily and safely.thanx

  • @azb473

Clip their wings search youtube how to clip birds wings. If your not comfertable on clipping them yourself take them to the vet the vet will clip it for you.

  • Very informative!! Thanks for sharing now I have a better understanding of this beautiful bird. :)

  • This is a very informative video. Thanks for posting!

  • Where did you buy that cage? I would love to have one just like that.

  • putting a tree branch in your cage isnt a bad idea, make sure you boil it to rid of bacteria or mites that could from wild birds

  • is there eny leafs that could harm the cockatiel?

  • That Cockatail is like Related to mine. It does everything that mine does...

  • My cockatiel is 14 yrs. old. She's awesome! She's the friendliest girl, you could ever meet.

  • I have a white one with peach cheecks. How do you tell if it's a female or male? It hasn't tryed to start singing though. It just cheeps, and im in the process of training it. I bought it cheep that way. Will the femails sing?

  • females normally dont sing. they aren't that much interative either. ALthough each bird has its own personalities-but normally the males are the ones who sings and do more then just cherp. If you want to test it put a mirror in front of it. If the bird loses interest i'd say within the first 10 minutes then its female. if it stays interested its a make.

  • @rnttreed

you can look closely on its tail with a bright light to see if their are yellow stripes if it does have yellow stripes its a female :)

  • Thanks for a cool video!

Your bird is a female. I know because of the striped tail and small amount of yellow on the face. Her cheek patches are very pale, too. The males have more of a reddish orange cheek patch.

    Cute bird!!

  • That cage is way too small. I have my tiel in a big flight cage and he loves it.

  • @Thugluvgrl187 that is not true, if you want your tiel to fly you can take it out of the cage and depending who you are, the cage is just its safe sanctuary, not its life

  • plz tell me why my cockatiel aint chirping

  • cause it's an alcoholic... i've seen you giving it guiness and vodka...

  • My cockatiel can drink two pints of Guiness and can then sing Nessun Dorma better than Pavarotti

  • @sasukevsorochimaru22

    because its a female

  • its a girl cockatiel as it has bars on its tail. so it wont make a little tune

  • @benbzn2damax someone may have already said this, but they all look like girls when under 6-12 months old, and this is a young one, like she says.

  • @benbzn2damax

When they are babies even males have the bars. When the adult feathers come in the males will lose the bars.

  • @benbzn2damax Young cockatiels have bars on their tail regardless of gender. You need to wait for the adult feathers to come in before you can determine gender through the feathers.

  • how come my new cockatiel aint chirping and its been 3 months

  • @sasukevsorochimaru22 well that's a good thing chirping is fucking annoying

  • Great video!

I have a 27 year old Cockatiel who is and old man. We got him as a juvenile (he has stripey feathers on his tail then, but has developed natural male colouring and the vocal personality too boot!).

  • excellent video :D

  • its a girl girl cockatiels have stripped tails

  • good info..

but that cage is too small imo

  • your bird is a girl. see the striped pattern underneath her tail feathers? in wild colored birds, that suggests that the bird's gender is female.

  • I love them, but i cant hold mine they scream and bite :(

  • i love cockatiels , in my house we have a lot :)

  • how many droppings do they do a day???

  • A parakeet does about 40. Why don't you count a few days and post the answer?

  • last year [2009] i wached this cuz it helped me when i got my 2 cockatiels

  • I'm sure this has been pointed out several times, but Cockatiels do not need gravel. DO NOT PUT GRAVEL in with a cockatiel

  • ok i have some quesitons about cockatiels cause i want 1.

    1) are they messy or pretty clean?

    2)wat snaacks do tthey like?

    3)are they loud?

plz reply or pm me thx

  • Any animal depends on you to clean the cage.

They like what you eat but not avacado please.

Go listen to some and see if you think they are loud. I don't although males are more vocal than females.

  • read books and look up info on the internet! do a lot of research! 'tiels can live for up to 20 years.

  • @musicguy35

when they eat they put some food on the ground.

They like spray millet and carrots.

only the males are loud, that is when they sing.

    Your best answer.

  • Is it true that parakeets and cockatiels get along? Will they fight or be really noisy?

  • Budgies (parakeets) and cockatiels should NOT go into the same cage. Parakeets are very aggressive and can injure a cockatiel.

  • Cockatiels and parakeets usually do fine together.

  • no they don't! the parakeets can be more bossy than 'tiels.

  • @espeon954

parakeets dont really get along with female cockatiels, But they get along perfectly with male cockatiels.

  • @bilaremix why wouldn't they get along with female cockatiels? I was told two male parakeets wouldnt get along but my 2 males like each other.

  • i swere i have the same exact cage for mine!!!

  • thank you

  • why buy a book when you have a computer and the internet? I looked it all up online for my bearded dragons, leopard gecko, 2 tokay geckos, parakeet...

  • Don't forget books are edited and have less chance for errors. I always refer to a book first.

  • Yet another informative video by AnimalExchange...

  • my cockatiel flew away yesterday:(

whts the chance of him coming back? i can hear him whistling as the sun sets. he is 5 months old what the chance of him coming back?

  • @DistorXionPedal1993 fuck dude, Ive had experience, only 3 out of the 6 ever came back...it depends how long, my 1 year old survived 3 days in a tree and the other we got in 20 minutes, the last flew back home...you gotta find yours FAST

  • thnxfor the advice dude,.....ive had no luck findinghim :( but since then i have bought a male cockatiel that loves talking more and is more playful so i am enjoying him but the old one i haveno hope for because he hasbeen gone for too long.

  • that is why you keep their wings clipped. don't let them out the house unless they are clipped! you are just asking for them to fly off! its irresponsible.

  • that is why you clip their wings. it is irresponsible if you dont and let them outside.

  • @DistorXionPedal1993

You can put your cage outside in your garden then your bird will might come to its cage for food. But if you have an apartment without a garden or balcony, You can just put posters on the streets saying lost cockatiel etc.

  • can any one tell me how much is the typical price for a caockatiel?

  • usual price is $89 for a fancy. That's the one with red cheeks.

  • The normal cockatiel has the red cheeks. Whiteface cockatiels are more uncommon and cost more.

  • no, thats a normal grey. a "fancy" one would be albino, lutino, whiteface, cinnamin, or pearl. i have never heard anyone call them fancy.

  • @CRUZIE92

In England its £35 to £100.

    In America its $50 to$200.

  • the comment about mirrors are not always true. My tiel has a small mirror in his cage and a big one outside of his cage. He talks to himself in them all the time, and yet spends most of the day hanging out with the wife and I.

Also, I don't recommend holding the bird by the neck and tail. Why would you hold a part that is small and fragile. You want to hold around the wings to keep them in control. Once those wings start flaping you could injure the bird. Don't handle my birds please.

  • Question about cockatiels:

I'm interested in owning one, but I've heard from someone that they can be quite noisy, and kept her up at night. Is this common? Is this something to worry about?

  • Mine doesn't keep me up at night so I gueess it depends on the bird and household. I would suggest keeping the cage covered at night so any strange movements or shadows don't spook them.

Tiels can be noisy, mine is when she wants attention, is scared, or wants breakfast and I'm not up yet..

  • Good answer.

  • i used to have one, my mum made me get rid of her :( i loved her to bits, but she was nasty and was very very noisy, when i put the towel over her cage she was very noisy!! she never shut up.. but i miss her :'( x

  • @SarahBaybiiOx99Ox

she was a male, Males are usally noisy females arn't

  • i have 5 cockatiels. at night as long as you take care of them. and cover them at night and keep it dark for em, they'll be very quiet.

  • The birds we keep as pets are normally up when it is light. They are rarely noisy in the dark if everything is quiet. We had a snowstorm recently and I had to spend 2 nights at the store. I slept well. When I did need to get up, I turned the light on first and they all started to vocalize. If I moved around in the dark, they would startle. and thrash around in the cage , damaging feathers.

  • @Greensmurf

They can be noisy only the males will be noisy. If they continue to be noisy just covour them with a blanket and they will stop strait away.

  • I'm shocked at the response animalexchange1 gave you. I feel really bad for you because I got one as well been almost a year now and the little bugger bonded with my husband lol. And he no longer likes me at all. Bites me too. I would never make that time of recomendation. I'm sure she/he loves the bird. Shame on you!!

  • My cockatiel became very violent lately, he keeps bitting me (to the blood !) and he yells all the time.

Can someone please tell me what that is all about and how I can solve this ?

  • @yodathedeathshadow

you can covour it with a blanket.

  • @bilaremix No thats just cruel and it doesn't work. He's better now ^^ though he doesn't eat as much :(

  • what a cute bird! lol My dad he used to have a parakeet and a cockateils and one of them moved in with the cockateil and took off its top feathers. my dad said it was trying to make it look more like a parakeet and the cockateil didnt mind XD

  • GREAT VID!!!!! I had no idea that you have to hold cockatiels ike that!!! And what do you mean by tolilolilollilolilolio?

  • is it best to have two or can you have only one and are they easy to get tame :)?

  • I always recommend one for a pet, two for breeding.

  • Great Vid, very informative! I am thinking about buying one and I am doing a lot of research because my wife and I live in an apartment.

  • is it ok to yell at your cockatiel? If my bird squawks really loud by me, ill do it back to him and he hates it, then stops. Sometimes I'll yell 'shut-up' as loud as i can at him, and he stops immediately also. These are both effective methods for shutting their loud little beaks up.

  • I'd say that that is probably not a good idea. Remember that birds can be really emotional and can become upset from the yelling.

  • My guess is that your bird is very pleased with getting such an impressive response from you. He has trained you well.

  • Indeed. Hahaha

  • I bought 3 parakeets. And i wanna take them back cause all they do is scream and wake up the damn family. Im thinking about trading them in for a cockatiel.

  • Perhaps you should think about another type of pet. All birds make noise.

  • i like this video a lot thank you. you really know a lot and it really helps!! thanks.
