The "second version" that people are talking about is simply the reprise of the song, performed at the end of the first scene (the "first version" opens the scene). The first one is sung by Wendla (Lea Michelle) and the reprise is performed by the females of the cast, including Wendla and excluding the female adult (she plays several roles in the show).

@rachy1234578 This is the opening song of the whole show, so the audience isn't expected to know too much either.

Basically though, she's living in a society in which the adults give absolutely no trust to the children, so Wendla (Lea's character) is lamenting the fact that her mother has told her basically nothing about life, or sex, or any kind of mature theme. She has an intense longing for trust and information and life above all else, really.

@rachy1234578 You're very welcome! As far as audition songs go, people come up with a lot of "rules" like not using songs from current Broadway shows etc.- this is 99% bullcrap, to be honest. The panel will appreciate a quality performance of any song- if you can pull it off, then go for it!

This is a wonderful song, but it requires so much -emotion- in the singing to really sell your performance. If you think you can do it, then absolutely yes. Good luck, let me know how you go!

@cuppycupcakes13 I don't think it's really happy when it hits the faster part. It's the reprise, it's the reiteration of the story told by the song originally. I think it does a great job in telling of the now intensity behind the feelings.
