I actually can't believe there are so many young people on this show that don't know at least one foreign language good enough to have a decent conversation. That is even with 30% of the US being hispanic.

I remember 'the Hippies' team and one of them spoke fluent Japanese & spoke some other languages as well which came in useful when they were in Japan & helped them along other countries, so it's fair no matter what. I think they have trouble communicating. Through out the race we see that they, especially Jamie, do not know how to properly talk to the drivers. They always walk away when a taxi driver do not know what they are talking about, may be if they put more effort in trying to communicate they would get taxis faster.

dude the whole series was planned out before they even auditioned for contestants, and i doubt the producer knew that tammy and victor spoke chinese, because they didn't mention anything about being chinese before this leg and they just got lucky because they happened to be in a country where they can speak the local language, it's too bad the other teams are too ignorance and less cultured to know a 2nd language fuently.

Second, the chef held the Jih siblings to a higher standard of pronunciation. They had to get it exactly right, whereas the other pair (understandably) never *really* pronounced the dishes correctly, but were still given the "okay" when they got close.

Victor might be a control freak but Tammy's lucky to have him as a partner since he always want to do road blocks (if they don't have to divide it between themselves, bet he'll do it all) I remember the rickshaw challenge, he's the only one who pull Tammy all the way unlike the others who alternate it between their partners. Just don't think Tammy can eat those gross stuff that fast.

i see what you mean, but let face it, he is good (average) but not great (local standard). plus i think someone mentioned he is taiwanese, and thus i can see why he had trouble understanding the heavy local accent.
it doesn't mean that just because they can speak mandarin they should be on amazing race asia. asia is a big continent and many many asians do not speak mandarin. if you have watched the asian version of the race, you would know that the show is done entirely in english and it is a requirement for all contestants to speak english. so my point is there is basically no connection between being able to speak mandarin and being on amazing race asia. just saying coz i watched all seasons of it.
and if someone took french in college and went to france that would be unfair. Or what if someone had taken japanese or spanish and a destination was japan or spain. Would that be unfair. its not unfair if someone knows a foreign language, i would think it smart to go in with a second language.
ITA! Its good to know a 2nd language, anything. If u know how 2 speak the language it would be dumb NOT to use it. I mean I know some French from gr 9 so I used it in Paris last month. I can speak Punjabi so I would use it if I went to India or in Canada where I live. Its smart (and good for the brain).

I think its is ENTIRELY selfish and cowardly for the two people who have had a major upperhandin this race by being able to speak chinese, to detour thesisters. Albeit its a good strategy but, "I cant outrun you" is their excuse? Ridiculous.

Victor's putonghua was actually very good, he spoke fluently and therefore I expected him to be able to differentiate between LONGyu and YOUyu. It just wasn't a mistake he should have made.

i see what you mean, but let face it, he is good (average) but not great (local standard). plus i think someone mentioned he is taiwanese, and thus i can see why he had trouble understanding the heavy local accent.

it doesn't mean that just because they can speak mandarin they should be on amazing race asia. asia is a big continent and many many asians do not speak mandarin. if you have watched the asian version of the race, you would know that the show is done entirely in english and it is a requirement for all contestants to speak english. so my point is there is basically no connection between being able to speak mandarin and being on amazing race asia. just saying coz i watched all seasons of it.

and if someone took french in college and went to france that would be unfair. Or what if someone had taken japanese or spanish and a destination was japan or spain. Would that be unfair. its not unfair if someone knows a foreign language, i would think it smart to go in with a second language.

ITA! Its good to know a 2nd language, anything. If u know how 2 speak the language it would be dumb NOT to use it. I mean I know some French from gr 9 so I used it in Paris last month. I can speak Punjabi so I would use it if I went to India or in Canada where I live. Its smart (and good for the brain).

I think its is ENTIRELY selfish and cowardly for the two people who have had a major upperhandin this race by being able to speak chinese, to detour thesisters. Albeit its a good strategy but, "I cant outrun you" is their excuse? Ridiculous.

haha i thought it was kind of funny coz the dish they got wrong, hao yun long yu, they thought was hao yun you yu. hao yun = good luck. you yu = cuttlefish, which can never be associated with good luck. lol. coz chao you yu = fry cuttlefish, its a term that means to be fired from your job.
