Corn syrup & refined white sugar have no business being in an energy bar or health food. Both are highly refined sugars and the corn syrup is genetically modified and heavily sprayed with pesticides.
@danikacarter Agreed. Do you happen to know a healthy alternative to corn sirup? A healthy starch that will bind and hold the cornbars together? I have a bit of a hard time finding that. I know some use agava syrup, but I don´t know alot about it.
These energy bars are delicious, but probably not the healthiest. Has anyone worked out the nutritional information yet? Here's the ingredients: 1 c almonds 1 c Rolled oats 1 c Shredded coconut 1/2 c sesame seeds 1 c Raisins 1 c Cranberries 1 c Apricots 3/4 c light corn syrup +6 tbsp honey 1 c sugar 1 1/4 peanut butter 3 tbsp milk powder
Sugar and Corn Syrup ??? ... and he is calling this a healthy "Energy" bar ??? You gotta be kidding! I'm tired of these idiots who know nothing about nutrition doing YouTube videos to further miseducate the public. Eating that shit will DRAIN your energy - not give it to you.
These bars are for athletes, not the general public or people doing yoga. The best way to increase/maintain glycogen stores is to give athletes fast absorbing carbohydrates, such as sugar. So he has the right idea, but the amount of calories per bar is wrong for the activity level.
I do agree with a lot of the postings. I was expecting a little more than the corn syrop-- ok the sugar I can see as sometimes you need a substance to make things stick. I would just add more honey, and as another fellow used in another recipe-- blended dates as the binder-- great idea.
what store bars have that these don't is the crazy amounts of salt and preservatives for longer shelf life. Each to their own I guess. Some people need steps to get to a better place and this is at least a start
update: wanted to add that if i make these bars again.. i will definitely be using less sugar and corn syrup. the bars were too sweet this time around.
belsicilia - yoga is appropriate for *any* lifestyle ;)
Corn syrup and sugar???? those are poisonous, not sure its appropriate for a yoga lifestyle, there is so much natural sweetness in the fruit and even the honey!
i made my second batch of these bars today. this time i did not use orange zest, and replaced the cup of apricots with a bag of "mariani's tropical medley" (dried pineapple, papaya, coconut, apricots, raisins and apples ), while still adding the shredded coconut, golden raisins and cranberries to the mix. yum! the lack of orange flavor gives these bars a more peanut buttery taste!
personally, i think the sugar and corn syrup is fine here. this recipe should yield A LOT of bars, so the amount of "bad sugars" per bar should be relatively small. by all means substitute, but either way, the healthy nutrients far outweigh these two ingredients.
The only minus is that by roasting any of these delicious ingredients we are getting rid of all the vital and valuable nutrients such as calcium etc. plus the refined sugar which is definately to avoid in a wholsome diet. As a result we are getting the stuff no different from the one you can buy at any grocer without that unnecessary hassle. Why not to make something using only raw natural ingredients, mincing, forming into bars and keeping in the fridge. Healthy and energetic. Bon voyage:)

@MariusWM A lot of people like agave, but I prefer honey. You could also use coconut oil as it hardens at room temperature.

I would consider these bars a kind of treat like 'mars' or 'sneakers' because of the sugar, corn sirup, peanut butter and toasted nuts...
It is healthier to eat nuts and seeds raw!

You had me up until the SUGAR and corn syrup. Bad energy. Why not use agave nectar or just the honey?

Very nice. I wonder if some added spices might be interesting.
