Every summer when I was little, I would go to Cape Cod with a bunch of my cousins who were about my age. We would all sleep together in a bunk house, and before bed, my mom, my aunt, and my uncle would sing this to us before we went to sleep. They actually sounded pretty good.
My uncle died a couple years ago. Now whenever I hear this song, I think of him singing this to me before I went to sleep. :')
If you watch the travel channel's special on Austria, they didn't know about The Sound of Music til 13 years AFTER its release....most people there still dont know about it. It has a lot to do with the the whole Nazi/German story to it.
Well they know about it in Salzburg, even if they have never heard of it in the rest of Austria.
It was weird because most English or American tourists were excited about Salzburg because of all the scenes from the Sound of Music - all other nationalities were excited about Mozart or the amazing Baroque buildings. I loved all three (plus the cable car to the Untersberg). Salzburg is a stunning city - always worth a visit for whatever reason.
Edelweiss is a plant that grows on the alps in Austria and throughout Germany. It's sort of a symbol of Austria and Germany, ironically this propaganda-movie didn't realize that Edelweiss was largely used as a symbol of the Wehrmacht and German army during ww2. This was also a marching song.

I love listening to this song. It takes me back to my childhood years at my Grandparents' house and playing in their garden. The flower the song is about reminds me of my Grandma's favorite flower and the song also reminds me of all the flowers she used to have in the yard. But my Grandpa passed away 4 years ago and my Grandma just last Christmas Eve and I miss them so much! Listening to this song helps me think about my childhood years with them. It makes me sad but also relaxed too.

@mikeyzip I agree with you mikeyzip. My grandpa Samuel came over from Austria before WW1. There were alot of Austrians and Germans who were anti Nazi and 5,000 Germans died for the unsuccessful last attempt on Hitler's pathetic life, 7/20/44
It's tough. Knowing what I now know about the period, about Austria, and looking at the words of the song, it always gives me a chill listening to it. It's lovely, beautiful even, but that chilling part won't go away.

@praxylite Maybe some did, but not all. You can't say based on the people that you know about, that EVERY single person in austria wanted the Anschluss.
@RainnDropsOnRoses Just look at the Sound of Music. You have Uncle Max who didn't approve, but dealt with it. Will bet you money that plenty of Austrians just realized they couldn't fight it.

I never mentioned anything about past leaders, why would they matter? I'm talking about the current party.

@TheDonnaEl ... Shut up you filthy racist bastard. Bet you're a disgusting republican too eh? Bet you'll be the kind of person who votes for sarah palin if she runs, her with the IQ of a crack addicted whore and you with fewer.

@Smile4theCrosshairs lol he didn't even mention anything about Obama being black . And you start bashing him for rasism right away . I think i understand how Obama won the election now . Everyone who doesn't vote for him is (apparently) racist so everyone votes him so they don't seem racist by picking a white guy over a black guy . When in fact there is nothing wrong in that when the white guy deserve it more .
@Comrade4561 Not got time to look back to it but if i remember correctly it was something along the lines of ''having the obama family in the white house is wrong.''... @Smile4theCrosshairs Ha! I certainly don not have to prove I am not racist. I don't really give a hoot whether I come off as it or not. I should bring up that plenty of of Americans leaders were Republican. Like Abraham Lincoln (I wonder what he did?), Theodore Roosevelt (A Man A Plan Panama, anyone?), Ronald Reagan (I think he did something about a wall.). So the leaders are racist. You are too, I can accuse you of being racists towards whites or Alaskans for what you said about Palin.
@TheDonnaEl T.T ..... Racist! There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a different skin tone. Honestly, what era do you come from? People haven't been this racist since before Abraham Lincoln diminished the right to own slaves or something. -.-"
LOVE this song. Saw the moving at the Dundee Theater in Omaha Nebraska, Seven times! my aunt worked at the theater good times. Goosebumps all the way!
Well sorry but it's hard to grow up in a world where everyone tells you your ancestors were monsters without looking at facts >.>
It's funny what propaganda can make people believe. The allies committed far more atrocities then the axis including a holocaust. Unfortunately Brits never remember the 6-7 million people they starved to death in Bengal or the 1 million they killed in concentration camps during the Boer war.
I hate to rant on such an unrelated video but I can't take it
This the film is set during the 1938 German Anschluss with Austria the family sang the song to insult Germany as it is very patriotic, the flower of Austria being the Edelweiss
@avidpianist Why would you bother watching it then, you have obviously heard it somewhere before so why would you watch it again when your in the "know" that your own systematic hearing conscience is not attracted to this song. That kinda makes you sad to re-watch, even worse COMMENT on a video that you dislike. Or maybe your one of those youtube gangsters who watches videos and causes controversy, tryna make himself look hard and only watches rap or whatever you kids watch these days.
I want this video on my X250 unit.

Funny you say that as edelweiss was actually a famous waffen-ss marching song also known as "Erika". The sound of music butchered it here though...
Don't confuse the Wehrmacht with Nazis, you've watched to much lame propaganda, go die in a hole.

@EExecutable

@DJDizzy113 Not cool man..i love this song, but calling someone a nazi is as bad as calling a person a Nigga of Jap.....not cool...

Edelweiss, edelweiss, you look happeh to meet me. I love this song, but the pronunciation of "happy" from the Captain just makes me laugh.

This was Hammerstein's last song. He died just as the show was opening, this was his last piece. And it has all the beauty of a lifetime.

This the film is set during the 1938 German Anschluss with Austria the family sang the song to insult Germany as it is very patriotic, the flower of Austria being the Edelweiss

jimmyxx3 10 months ago
@jimmyxx3 Old English derivative of "Shit."

@avidpianist
Sir, edelweiss and shit are not the same thing.
jimmyxx3 10 months ago 3
@jimmyxx3 I agree. I was just telling you what 'shite' means.
avidpianist 10 months ago
@avidpianist
I see, thankyou for your information.
jimmyxx3 10 months ago
@avidpianist Why would you bother watching it then, you have obviously heard it somewhere before so why would you watch it again when your in the "know" that your own systematic hearing conscience is not attracted to this song. That kinda makes you sad to re-watch, even worse COMMENT on a video that you dislike. Or maybe your one of those youtube gangsters who watches videos and causes controversy, tryna make himself look hard and only watches rap or whatever you kids watch these days.
Briggsy102 9 months ago 2
@Briggsy102 Lol! I love Edelweiss. I grew up watching Sound of Music and Christopher Plummer's performance inspired me to become a theatre major.
I was simply explaining what the word 'Shite' meant to jimmyxx3.
