Illegal? Well, since rules state the ball cannot be thrown toward the player, it's already illegal regardless of whether it's blocked from view. Timo saw it I'm sure. What he didn't see was the wrist movement of Xu in making contact with the ball. There was decent backspin on it, and Timo miss hit due to that. But as soon as Xu threw the ball toward himself as it should have been called.
@COUNTRYLAPI the ball can be thrown toward the player, retard. shut up if you dont know what you are talking about. ask anyone who plays table tennis.
What a load of Bollox.........Im playing this game 30 years and the rules state, the free arm must not shield the ball at the point of contact. Xu Xin has dropped his arm well before the point of contact.......Also, on service you may throw the ball backwards at no more than a 45 degree angle.....I suggest you learn the rules before you post a video accusing players of breaking the rules.
@vcgwan71 Old dog better learn some new tricks:If the server could imagine a triangular space created by the ball and both net posts, then extends this space upwards to head level, the server must then ensure that no part of his body or clothing enters this space (or remains in this space) after he projects the ball upwards in service. This will ensure that the space between the ball and the receiver remains clear of any obstructions.
2. ball is supposed to be thrown vertically straight up-not sideways or backwards even- so there is no spin advantage from the ball toss-but since almost everyone on tour breaks this part, they cant really call it.-but this is after the new rules..
iitf rule
2.6.2 The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 16cm (6.3 inches) after leaving the palm...
@poksweet1213 Near vertical you idiot. Are you an umpire? Didn't think so. It's because of the camera angle. I know the rules say "the ball should be seen from the receiver no matter where he/she stands", but he's left handed. Every lefty gets called illegal serves, and righty's serves are illegal to us. If you had a camera at Xu Xin's point of view on Ma Long's serves, his serves would look illegal too. Please don't hate ^.^.
@DaFaiGai I agree this serve is somewhat ambiguous to determine, but the rule doesn't say how you said. it's should be something like 'upon the contact of ball during service, ball should be uncovered in the volume of space from the ball extending to the two net posts.
'for more indeath' - lol u fuckin piece of dog shit. Il get brian badonde to cup your ball sak an wen hes finished i will shit in my own budgies mouth and cry myself to sleep whil you learn to spell. SCATTER!!!
Agree with what @MrElijahtan said. The camera is 40 steps away from the player and if you walk closer, the angle will change and you will see the ball (or not). Nobody but the service returner knows, not even the umpire. That's why it's always beyond me when umpire calls for illegal serves.
I'am uploading all the old videos from the previous channel TableTennisDaily.. At the time when this video first got uploaded there was a big debate in table tennis whether Xu Xin serves were illegal.... so i made a video on it.. I am not saying they are illegal its for you to decide... it was a video made for the people who were wondering.
if it is illegal, the officials should have called for it. but i think it's not since Timo can see the ball from his point of view. maybe it seems illegal cuz of how it's seen in the camera but the opponent has a different view.
There's no way you can see from a spectators perspective whether its legal or not. Many pro players in my club look like they have illegal serves when you watch them play, but when actually on the table or umpiring you can see the ball fine.
@takkyu101 thats rubbish lol. a serve is or isn't illegal simple as that, theres no room for interpretation. the rules state you have to throw the ball straight up in there air at least 16cm i think? and xu xin has thrown it backwards across half the table meaning its illegal. the problem is that pretty much everyone throws it back now so they just can't be bothered to deal with it.
@MultiOlimac Yeah i know, at 0:39 it says : "For more indeath (indepth) analysis on Xu Xin serving against Timo Boll, click the link in the description..."
I know TableTennisDaily is trying to serve the table tennis community right, but they do too much of this crap. Really nothing to be concerned about, just a way to get people to go to his forum.

SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER:
The rules state that during a server, the ball must be visible to the opponent ALL THE TIME.
But with 9/10 player you can see that they're deliberately hiding the ball either with one arm or even with a part of their body.
So how come these serves are seen as legal ???

illegal in 2 respects.
1. ball is hidden via body at moment of contact
2. ball is supposed to be thrown vertically straight up-not sideways or backwards even- so there is no spin advantage from the ball toss-but since almost everyone on tour breaks this part, they cant really call it.-but this is after the new rules..

Maybe from the camera view its illegal maybe with other people who play with him can see his racket and ball
MrElijahtan 6 months ago
90% of players have an illegal serve in some respect. They're all good enough for it to not make any significant difference though.

its not your call to say whether or not its legal, it is up to the umpires to decide. If they thought it was illegal, then they would have said so.
