I heard somewhere that this guy was the back-up singer/actor since the original died (I don't know if this is true or not), but if he's this good, can you imagine what the original guy sounded like?
Even though I am Pagan I LOVE this song and in fact the whole musical. It has been my dream since high school to be able to sing the part of Judas on stage - but not really going to happen for a girl or not woman. Carl was the perfect choice for this part - on the album, movie and on stage which I was lucky enough to see him perform in Denver about 12 or so years ago with Ted Neeley ( would have perfered Ian Gillian but Ted was good too).
Lloyd-Webber / Rice classic, treated respectfully by Jewison. As timeless as its many mixed messages. First saw it at the cinema with my parents in 1974, then got the soundtrack on cassette. Wore that out. Found it on DVD about 5 years ago. Use it to annoy the wife by playing it as loud as I can.
One of the most powerful songs i have ever heard and delivered by an amazing vocalist.
This movie took me on a path of critical thinking that lead me from being a Catholic to a Christian (in more general terms) to being a Born Again Christian and then believing Christ was truly the last Christian and trying to be a Christian and finally to Atheism.
Hell of a ride and worth every moment.
This song was going through my head for the past several days which is why i ended up here.
@xoites877 Witches, kill them. Homosexuals, kill them.fortunetellers, kill them. those who don`t listen to priests, kill them. those hitting their dad, kill them. those who curse their parents, kill them, adulterers, kill them. fornicators, kill them. people who believe in other religions, kill them. non-believers,kill them. fals prohets ,kill them. blasphemers, kill them. those who work on the Sabbath, kill them. This is the word of Jesus ( god) ?
@ndzoko Witches were to be killed. God smote one homosexual and a father killed his homosexual son for going against God's creation. Those who don't listen to priests, people hitting their dad, those who curse their parents were to be taught the "right" way of doing things. Fornicators and adulterers were stonned to death in society already.False prophets were not to be trusted. Blasphemers, those who work on the Sabbath went to Hell. But that was the old testement before Jesus.
@movelea And this almighty loving god as no less bloody, less murderous, ways to teach them the right way ? So you agree, that all those peopl deserve death ???
But that was the old testement before Jesus. WRONG; Jesus said: not one iota of the law(the old testament) will change, untill the end of time.>> The Old Testament is as valid as the New-Testament .
@ndzoko Jesus taught that to be with God after death we only must treat others as we wish to be treated, in other words: don't be a jerk and you'll make it in. When Jesus came the old rules died, and are no longer neccessities. We needn't follow them anymore because Jesus changed them.

I've seen Carl Anderson do this live a few years back in Hampton Va. He was Magnificient, hasn't lost any ability some 30 years later. Terrrific song, terrific musical!
@manila7979 glad to hear! you are correct about his death. Apparently he lost a tough battle with cancer. I was fortunate enough to see one of his last shows which originally was supposed to have reunited several of the orginial cast from the movie including Ted Neeley (which I got to see Ted Neeley live as well as he continued the tour in honor of the late Carl Anderson). BTW Anderson is a native from my hometown of Lynchburg Virginia; the local School's auditorium is even named after him.
And now things have not changed one bit, the Christians have become intolerant and hateful, and do have too much heaven on their minds, while not thinking about their behavior on this good old earth.
@LYNAEHANSON I agree--definitely my favorite musical too. My mother bought this on 8-Track, lol...by the time I was 8 (1977), I knew all the words to the whole thing.
I like that Judas' jaw moves with the notes, I am glad that I am not the only one. lol
I will never understand people whom like the 2000 version over this one, why? The Judas in the 2000 version is nothing compared to this one. Same with Jesus! lol
Come on people we are talking about Ted FREAKING Neely (not sure how to spell last name). I mean that is like comparing that little girl from America's got talent to Sarah Brightman, its just insane!
When I was a kid my parents had the soundtrack in one of those old tapes. I knew a song or two, but didn't matter much about it. But years ago I stumbled upon it and saw the film and was amazed. What a incredible talent in the songs and the performers! I really LOVE it.
@akoplewitz - It's interesting that you don't like that particular song as it was the only new song written for the movie that wasn't in the Broadway show. I love it myself. I have always thought it to be beautiful and poignant. But that's what makes the world go 'round, eh?
brings tears to my eyes... when i was a wee nipper we livedway out in the piney boondocks in a log cabin,my dad ( a carpenter ) built . he rigged up a record player to a car battery and we would listen to this on sundays. and i can't think of a bad song on the whole list...
This movie was ironically at least in part responsible from my drift from catholicism. I always felt bad for Judas, i felt like god shafted him and somewhat forced him to betray his best friend. I also feel like Jesus got boned.
One of my highlights in my life was meeting Carl Anderson and Ted Neely when the production came to my town, i was able to go backstage and meet them......I was honestly star struck, this was and is still my favorite musical of all time......Les Miserables is 2nd....I love this song sooo much.
I'm not being smart - aleck or anything else, honestly, but has Ted Neely done any other roles ? I know that Carl Anderson is dead. This movie was REALLY controversial back in its day. Part of the controversy was that you had a black actor as Judas.
@knoxvilleguy2 Yes he has done a few other roles in movies way back in the 70s his last movie he was in was made in liek 1980 something, in the early 80s, cant rememeber ill have too look him up on Imdb later. He was in the 1970s movie Starsky and hutch....lol small role but he wa sin it...lol
@knoxvilleguy2 Neeley has. as previously stated, been in plenty of small parts in TV shows, such as S&H. He also starred in Odysseus, and his first role was the lead? in Hair. That show got him the JCS gig. And I'm sure he's been in plenty others.
@Valcarion - Interesting. He once said, he wished that he could get an acting role like one of Jack Nicholson's, but he still felt like he was in a good place. They did an interview with him that was really insightfully done. It's on here.
I love how this film gives Judas' point of view on Christ and tries to give an explanation for his actions. After all, if he were just plain evil, why would Christ give him a place amongst his followers?
Wonderful x

@Mileneum69
I'm not being smart - aleck or anything else, honestly, but has Ted Neely done any other roles ? I know that Carl Anderson is dead. This movie was REALLY controversial back in its day. Part of the controversy was that you had a black actor as Judas.

@Mileneum69
I think he got TOO typecast, and so did Carl Anderson.

@Mileneum69 - Like I said, they BOTH got typecast, even though there are worse roles to get typecast into.

No, the road to Hell is made of good intentions.
