We're sorry to learn of the passing of JR Mass, bass player in this video and brother to the chord player, Joe Jr., also playing here, on Jan. 5. Our deepest condolences to his family and brother Joe. The world has lost a true bass harmonica master.
Hi Jerry been a fan of the "Cats" since th mid 60's love your music and artistry my Dad loved your music he gone now he also enjoyed Bora and his group.
great great song, sounds good even today. Jerry and his group play with so much passion, the mouth organ isn't that easy to play, and they make it seem so easy. Thanks guys for a great performance
I remember these guys from when i was kid in Tampa back in the 60's. Saw them on the Ed Sullivan show as I recall. Thought they were great. Now as an adult I see I was right.
I love these original Harmonicats and remember them from way back then. 1947 the year I was married and life was good, so simple without all the stress of today's world. Thank you so much for posting! ~OneKewpie~
I love the harmonicats! this is what i call real harmonica trios. =D i play the hohner chord harmonica and super64 chromatic too. Can i request to have the score for the chord solo and also the scores for the trio in the video pretty please? =D
Thanks for the memories. I saw and heard you guys perform live in Des Moines, IA in the early 60's and I was hooked. Rich harmony. I was about 8yrs, old at that time, but I have some of your albums and I listen to them regularly. "Peg" is still the best, but "Sabre Dance" is great, as are they all. Bless you guys for bringing so much happiness, in an unhappy world.
What showmen and gentlemen also. Jerry encouraged others to study the instrument. I was on the SS Norway in the early 1980's and the group performed as a headliner show. On a shore excursion I bump into Jerry and ask him which harmonica to buy, so he helps me and held up my new purchase for inspection like a kind uncle...I rode back to the ship on the small boat with the group and they talked shop talk all the way back with me..didn't matter too them I couldn't play a note...
I have a phonograph that is a family heirloom ( for what ever reason), of this group. And it is locked in a storage safe at the moment. I love the music, interesting, and new. Even though Jerry Murad's has been around for a min.
Oh my God someone mentioned they had this on cassette? i listened to this song when it came out I believe 1949 or so on 78 at my grandmothers. I believe I wore it out and my uncul had to buy another record or I may have broke the record(remember those days) Love these guys ned
:-) my goodness does this bring back some memories, good memories. I had this on cassette, it looks like I need to head over to their web site so that I can get the CD. Thank you Harmonicats
P.S. I think another one of my favorites is Gallop of the Comedians. :-)
You're pretty much correct, At that time, echo was being used on voice recordings. It was the Cat's engineer, Bill Putnam, who engineered at the big voice recording studio in Chicago, Universal, that put echo so prominently in the Cats recordings. And to do so, he ran a speaker to the men's room which was made of ceramic tile which gave it a boomy sound and placed a microphone in front of it. This was unheard of at the time as there was no echo machines invented yet.
Memories bring tears often. I agree this has that effect ,but nice with pleasant memories for me of a life passed and not to be recapture only in such melodies such as this. Wonderful! so sweet sounding no wonder it touches emotional senses!
I don't know why, but every time I hear them play this song I get tears in my eyes. I don't know if it's the memory or the beauty of the peice. Thanks.
I first heard this recording back in the 60s. I loved Jerrys music then, and now its even more precious to me. Thanks for posting this Vid. Its a wonderful tribute to and amazing musician, and his orchestra of three.. Brings back a lot of memories to an old DJ like me. May God Bless.
Many years ago while my Dad was having his big band (Bobby Mills Orch.)recorded at Universal Recording in Chicago, the Harmonicats were down the hall recording as well. I remember him saying it was quite a treat to peek in on the session.
I was lucky enough to have seen them live in Chicago. Also, there was a local variety show in Chicago. It was Jim Moran, the Courtesy Man, a Hudson, then Ford dealer. He had them on about 2 or 3 times a year. This is one of my very favorite tunes.
Awesome! Loved to see "The Cats"

Here's a fond memory for ya'll.
When I was a kid, my grandmother came to live with us. She had a rather-strong 'accent.'
One day she said to me: 'pick up my hat.'
I said, 'what hat?' and she slapped me.
She meant: Peg O' My Heart. The record had fallen on the floor.
What a fond memory--seriously, I survived the slap (lol).
