The Balrog just wanted to join the fellowship, but Gandalf didn't want to loose the spotlight. That's why, at the end he was all like "You wanna still my thunder? Here, have the lightning too!"
I just wonder - why does he talk with Christopher Lee voice at the beggining? I know that evereryone are supposed to think that this is Saruman, but why the hell Gandalf would talk with Sarumans voice?
@tajniak4 If I were to wager a guess, it's because the body he is given, and the role he has assumed, is that of the of the head of the White Council. As he was one of the Maiar, his body and even name on Third Earth were dependent on the task he was assigned by the Valar. You'll notice he introduces himself as Saruman at first, and takes a moment before he appears to remember his old name.
And, of course, it gives fantastic dramatic effect. =P
Christopher Lee actually did an audition for gandalf but he was casted for saruman ^^ and if you hear closely youc can hear the voice of saruman in gandalfs voice in the beginning
A battle of two titans. I'd say it'd be a safe wager that that the last thing that balrog was expecting that day was to come up against one of his own kind (Maia).
Is Gandalf actually a Maia? Because I red the silmarillion and it was said that he was send from over the sea or something... but nothing more was know about him
He is indeed, and also one of the Istari. There were five of them: Saruman, Radagast, Alatar, Palando, and, of course, Gandalf that were sent from Valinor to keep an eye out on Sauron.
Man if he said "I am sauromon" I would have thrown my other axe at him staraight away i f i was gimili.THUNK Aragon:Gimili what the hell was that?Gimili:What he said he was saramon
Did anyone else catch the biblical references in these tales? Watch the final battle when he's coming down the mountain on the white horse. That's very much like Christ in Revelations.
haha i absolutely appreciate all the important "mechanisms of literature," don't worry about that! are you suggesting your silly comment portrays a keen understanding of literature? seems more like an understanding of fantasy gaming, which is completely cool btw
I think a movie about him would be a good idea. It could start out from the time of his birth to his young adult life and how he went through trials and tribulations, and maybe he could have loved a girl and planned to marry her instead of becoming a wizard, but lost her in some way, which made him choose the path of becoming a wizard.
That is how I would look at the past of Gandalf, anyway. Maybe I'll try to make a sims 2 video this....
I was responding to jfbruglio and I thought a movie all about Gandalf would be a good idea. Second of all, don't take that attitude with me again over a movie and just because I was speaking hypithetically about something, okay?

Saruman should have been wise, virtuous, brave, and entirely committed to overthrowing Sauron. That was his task. When he fell into evil and, in the book, rejected his title of 'The White' in favour of 'The Many Colours', he had failed in his purpose as head of the order, and so was replaced by Gandalf. Thus Gandalf became the White Wizard in his place.
Saruman is the one with the cloak of many colors, he is not saruman the white...gandalf is the the only istari with a reference to white as his color.
I don't mean to offend anyone, or get into a long and weary argument but you can't call someone a "nerd" for knowing their own language and being able to use it appropriately.
I myself slightly prefer saruman to gandalf, and no, Gandlaf is not second only to sauron. thoudh he saruman and the white council are all very close to it
Gandalf is so cool. It upsets me in the extended edition of RoTK when the witch king breaks his staff. The way I understand it Gandalf is far more powerful than him even in his earthly form. Second only to Sauron
Drammatic i know... :). but, if you think about it for a while... i'm sure you will understand the themes within this clip. Be well and happy. great post.... kindest regards,
But isn't comparing Jesus with this "Gandalf" a little bit too "hard", too?
As far as I am concerned, Jesus was not a warrior; Jesus didn't serve a dynasty; He was not a well looked after old man. Nor did he dwell among the soldiers.
I think such far-fetched comparisons are a bit dangerous; look, if Gandalf has his counterpart in the real world (let's say Jesus); then as a matter of fact, Sauron too. The Russian, the Arabs, Jews, ...? Just give it a thought.
i agree you must not compare the two its dangerous even tolkien said he wasnt based off jesus he was more like a powerful prophet if anything hes like samuel sent to help lead men
I pretty much agree with you in that it's wrong to liken the characters directly. However, I don't see anything wrong in drawing parallels with individual scenes and things that people did or taught in the Bible. That's different. Even then though, you have to be careful...and always point out that the parallel is of your making and not necessarily the writer;s.
Gimli's pants are fairly too...u know...Fifty years under Moria...But there's still a way out of this predicament. Have a look at Legolas' Hair-Whitening Shampoo (Deluxe Edition).
Take care, Sauron ! Uncle Gandalf's coming with his
GANDALF'S ULTIMATE WASHING-POWDER OF THE ELVEN !
Next time,we'll teach Saruman why he should not put the white cloaks and the coloured ones in the same basket. Aragorn will also discover why he direly needs a 5-isildurs razor...
The Dark Lord has Nine. But we have One, mightier than they: the White Rider. He has has passed through the fire and the abyss, and they shall fear him.
I think he forgot his name because his old identity was wiped clean by the enlightenment. Spending all that "non-time" in the Void beyond thought and time made him "reborn" as the White.
each day was as long as a life age of the earth, thats what time was to him , after fighting the balrog his spirit went to valinor ( heaven ) and was sent back as head of the istari order, the order of the wizards. so to him it seems like he was gone longer like hundreds of years and his name in valinor is not gandalf but is somthing like olrion. so its not hard to understand how he would forget his earth name
Gandalf died as Gandalf the Grey. But because he died willingly sacrificing himself for the sake of the others, he was sent back by Ilúvatar, as a significantly more powerful figure.
I think that his physical form 'died', but you're right about his spirit not dying. He was in the form of an old man on Middle-earth because the Valar (i think) wanted to limit his powers in the physical world. So, physically, he died, but Eru Ilúvatar sent him back in a new physical form.
Lucky for Gandalf that Aragorn's sword wasn't Anduril at this point, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to burn it out of his hand. In the books, the blade turned hot but Aragorn didn't drop it.
*Sceadufaex, in reconstructed West-Saxon - the ae should be ligatured, the Old English letter known as aesc='ash', but I lack the skill with a computer-keyboard. 'Faex' means hair or mane; it survives in the personal name 'Farfax'.
Perfectly correct & proper, but the conceit of the book is that it is a translation. In this 'translation' the language of the Rohirrim(Riders of Rohan, the Riddermark) is rendered as a form of Old English, specifically the Mercian(=Mark) dialect.

perhaps only through journeying through to the other side may we as well shine.

It is absolutely true. What we find is that we have always been shining. Matter is really nothing but the energy of consciousness.

so what happened, gandalf died, then he went to "heaven" or what its called in middle-earth, and then the valaa sent him back as a stronger wizard?

Gandalf died as Gandalf the Grey. But because he died willingly sacrificing himself for the sake of the others, he was sent back by Ilúvatar, as a significantly more powerful figure.
Hope that helped.

Actually Gandalf was a Maiar (Olorin), so I would doubt whether he DIED.
Monacyt 3 years ago

Sorry typo: FaIrfax.

In the book, it says Shadowfax.
AdamArchangel 3 years ago
Perfectly correct & proper, but the conceit of the book is that it is a translation. In this 'translation' the language of the Rohirrim(Riders of Rohan, the Riddermark) is rendered as a form of Old English, specifically the Mercian(=Mark) dialect.

Oh ok. Fare enough. Thanks for that.

Our Lord Jesus Christ. Tolkien was Catholic, so it makes sense that he would use Jesus as part of the foundation of Gandalf's character.

If I am not mistaken he is the one that introduced C.S. Lewis to christianity.

Yeah, Round-Up. Supposed to kill weeds and grass, but the bloody things always come back one day or another.
