We should all ban the usage of prefixes in our daily conversation especially with strangers such as calling them with respect with the assumption of the age, like they're older or younger than the speaker, at first without knowing their background.
These prefixes include: Bong (brother), Ploun (younger brother), Om (uncle or aunt), Pou (uncle), Ming (Aunt), etc because by saying it we are subjected ourselves or subordinated ourselves below the listener alreaday.
Well, I take it as signs of respect, not signs of subordination. More contemporary thinkers might view it as something rotten of the past, but our ancestors are wiser than we'd ever be until we reach that old age. Depending on people's cultures, there are people that find prefixes offensive and there are others who do it out of tradition. I don't find it offensive at all, and I use prefixes to show that I respect my culture and elders. I don't use it to often, but I use it at appropriate times.
Oh, if you're talking about strangers, yeah... I don't know what to use unless they're like flagrantly and apparently older or younger than me. If I'm not sure and say, they're around my age or something, I address them by name. If they're close friends and around my age, you can say "knear" or something, that shows you're close.
But to be honest, I barely use the prefixes. Only if they're way older, I use prefixes like oum, pou, gong, mah, meeng (my parents friends)... you know. and i call my daddy and mother pa and ma. as for my siblings/friends i'll call them by name. i usually speak english anyway, and not khmer or jap or whatever. lol.

There are a lot of info out there that say there's no such thing as fate or God. According to Evolution, Big Bang Theory, and String Theory, things happen by chances. I can believe that organisms change over time according to their environment, & I can also believe in reincarnation and souls. Fate is just one of the things I believe in based on last lives, etc. Big Bang Theory cannot disprove religion to me, because even THAT can be part of fate. I see science separately from religion...

Science can only prove the physical aspect of things. That's all it has ever done, and all it ever will. It can count the number of genes in the Human Genome or measure the size of an atom, but it can never expand into the abstract world. Only personal belief can delve into the spiritual, abstract aspects of life.

Some day, scientists will be able to explain spiritual things. It's not impossilbe. It's only extremely difficult. It's inconclusive because it's impossible. There's more to life than birth and death, and most people are born with an instinct to believe. To me, Buddhism will always sounds the most reasonable. Thanks to the theories formed by Albert Einstein, it's possible to design a time machine, to create a sun energy, to teleport a person, to make an object disappear, and so on. We should all ban the usage of prefixes in our daily conversation especially with strangers such as calling them with respect with the assumption of the age, like they're older or younger than the speaker, at first without knowing their background.
These prefixes include: Bong (brother), Ploun (younger brother), Om (uncle or aunt), Pou (uncle), Ming (Aunt), etc because by saying it we are subjected ourselves or subordinated ourselves below the listener alreaday.

Well, I take it as signs of respect, not signs of subordination. More contemporary thinkers might view it as something rotten of the past, but our ancestors are wiser than we'd ever be until we reach that old age. Depending on people's cultures, there are people that find prefixes offensive and there are others who do it out of tradition. I don't find it offensive at all, and I use prefixes to show that I respect my culture and elders. I don't use it to often, but I use it at appropriate times.

Oh, if you're talking about strangers, yeah... I don't know what to use unless they're like flagrantly and apparently older or younger than me. If I'm not sure and say, they're around my age or something, I address them by name. If they're close friends and around my age, you can say "knear" or something, that shows you're close.

Only if they're way older, I use prefixes like oum, pou, gong, mah, meeng (my parents friends)... you know. and i call my daddy and mother pa and ma. as for my siblings/friends i'll call them by name. i usually speak english anyway, and not khmer or jap or whatever. lol.
