  • Used the drill method myself many years ago, with a flexi-drive attached. Thank goodness for modern speed-sensitive and reversible drills! Nice little vid.

  • How do you know the valve giudes wont be damaged aswell? If the materia falling on the guides damages it during the process it can cause much harm.

  • You have to be careful and make sure the compound does not get on the stems. Regardless of the method used you always have to make sure of this. I use Lubriplate on the stems; it is an engine assembly grease. When you remove the valve, that is when you have to be careful not to touch the seat with the stem.

I like it a bit more than direct drill-to-valve method as it can grind an incorrect angles in the seat created by an angle caused by the weight of a drill or the intertia torque... Do you think valve lapping by hand instead of using mechanical tools can make some difference in performance actually?

    Valve lapping by hand is the correct way since you have more control and feel but a mechanical tool that reciprocate is a good helper. I don't think that you may damage anything if you are careful since the valve is still guided by the guide; I don't think that the use of a drill will change the angle of the valve.

    As far as performance, if the valve closes properly, the engine should perform the same way regardless of the way you lapped the valves.
