It's a nice visual video which allows students not only to have an approach to the symbol of the US (the flag), but also contains the lyrics of the US hymn.
@narutopain11 yeah, but what does the shape of a star have to do with that... the stars on the u.s. flag are right side up... do you know the significance of that?
If you ever redo this, list the States as they join (which would make it truly educational), and the years of union. Hawaii, BTW still has a bit of the Union Jack in their State flag.
Im Suprised that there are people praising the british even though it was there colonial empire enemy and not praising the french who actually helped them
@ScarkProductions think about it the first americans WHERE British many americans fought for Britain during the reveloution. about 1/2 of the scots that migrated to the states returned tae scotland after the revolution.
@DrinkToIreland That dont mean you gotta love um, you think, i assume your irish by the name, us irish prasing the brits despite all the shite they done to us
@ScarkProductions yeah me too lol. I'm American and recognize that we should be thanking the french even if they only helped us to take a stab at Britain.
Yep, the English are awful, even the Scottish PM and the Welsh don´t like them anymore since the EU summit 3 days ago, courtesy to Cameron......and then the dreadful always effective "majority election" system. almost like Putin in Russia.....who would ever want to invade that cunt-ry, except silly Hitler back then....
@emiblindside No, Nobody hates the french, just idiots and if it was not for France, Britain will still have a commonwealth country across the atlantic! UK's history from an Irishmans point of views was colonisation, bullying and such.. Sorry to disappoint you but the USA is a nation filled with people from europe, africa and such so its not just UK that shares blood with america
@ScarkProductions you dont disappoint me.. I knew that. but I`ll insist with the french thing, many people talks shit about them :P btw, thanks to the irish to support argentina all the way. We send hugs to you
@emiblindside We will always support the country that are the 'good guys' Yes the french and the canadians are always getting insulted by americans but meh, i dont know why..i dont like it when powerful country pick on smaller or weaker countrys :L
It would have been better if the US kept the Grand Union flag in order to symbolize their British heritage and origin. but I'm Canadian, we didn't even keep the union jack on our flag.
@3dwardcullen69 well. the US is no more under the rule of the queen (or king) of the UK so maybe there's no more reason to keep the union flag there. the flag of the state of Hawaii still preserves the union flag, tho.
@EvanC0912 Whether the Union Jack represents the monarchy or not is questionable. And sure there is a reason to keep the Union Jack. There are two large reasons actually. Reason number 1 (which I have already stated): to highlight the US's British heritage and origin. Reason 2: George Washington and many Americans fought and died under the grand union jack in the revolutionary war. The historic foundations of America was under that flag.
@EvanC0912 lol, American and Canadians are pretty much the same, if not the same, than extremely similar. Only the pictures on our currency is different. Our history is intertwined with American history.
@3dwardcullen69 No one is going to change the flag.... The only real chance of the flag changeing is if Purto Rico the virgin islands or guam become states....
@TheGefro Indeed. I was just remarking on MY own preference. I think having a union jack on the American and Canadian flags is more fitting for English speaking countries.
@3dwardcullen69 I think its cool how Australia, New Zealand, United States, Welsh, Scotland, England, Ireland, South Africa and many others all share the same language!
@ghostliner45 well, if the USA happens to still use that grand union flag up to now. it will be the current british union flag in the canton (like the flag of australia)
So, the stars represent explosions, and the stripes represent the flowing blood of Iraqi, Vietnamese, German, Cuban, and Chilean children?... I'm just teasing, but I can't let you guys have all the fun right? God bless Capitalism, the most flawless system on Earth... In all seriousness sir, this video actually did help me for a project, and you did well on it, so thank you, and congrats :)
another interesting tidbit, there was no offical arrangment of stars or even colors until the 19teens. While colors were pretty much a no brainer, the star patterns were played with a bit (in diamond, circle or even stars made of stars patterns) through the years until it was standarized
Good video, but the Grand Union Flag was never officially the US flag. It was designed originally as a navy ensign by John Paul Jones. Also, just a side-note, the 13-star flag never had a set pattern for the stars. The circle is called the Betsy Ross flag (though most histoirans think she did not sew it), but it was rarely used. Many flags just had the 13 stars in rows of varying patterns with no official organization.
Actually, the Grand Union Flag (aka Washington's Colours, Congress Colours, Continental Colours) was our FIRST OFFICIAL FLAG by Act of Congess in 1775 until June 14, 1777. It was based upon the flag of the British East Indies Co., with the specific provision of 13 red & white alternating stripes representing the 13 colonies. It was Washington's favourite flag, he named it "our Grand Union Flag" in January 1776, and John Paul Jones first used it in December 1775.
Yes, there are several good links in reference to the Grand Union Flag being our first official flag. The Hall of Heroes is an excellent military/historical site.
The divergence of opinion regarding our first official flag, focuses upon whether one considers all Acts of Congress prior to 4 July 1776 to pertain to the "United States of America". The Star & Stripes GRADUALLY replaced the Grand Union Flag by 1781, albeit Congress made the change for the Navy 14 June 1776.
@USAsoldier1955 I just checked out that site and I do question the quality of its info (as a history major I have to). For one thing, the Flag Act making the Stars and Stripes the flag was June 14, 1777, not 1776 as you just claimed. Also, that site said that the Betsy Ross flag wasn't in use until the 1790s, but there are sources such as a description of a battle and a painting from the Revolution that argue otherwise.
@USAsoldier1955 also, the site said that it was authorized, implying that the flag was a recognized flag, but not necessarily an official one representing the nation as a whole, especially since, as you pointed out, indepence had yet to be declared.
@FreiherrvonTersch Yes, old chap....no difference how you spin it....whether the Grand Union Flag was "Official" or "Authorized" is all the same. And please forgive my typo in my last post, which you keenly discovered --14 July 1777 is the correct date for the "Authorized" 13 star flag. Yet the Grand Union Flag only gradually faded out of use, as primary documents & contemporary paintings indicate. So many patriots gave their lives fighting under the Grand Union Flag, our first US Flag.
