  • I think they sing without any expression

  • although the stage verision is uncomparable to the movie-- I must say that I enjoy the line read/emotion in the movie-- well atleast in this song, alot more.

  • I hate how they're so far apart throughout the entire song!

  • This play is so beautiful. It may ne funny but it is also kinda sad. I too have been trying to find the movie and hulu wont work for me

  • The movie cannot at all compare to the staged version.

  • @Cheetahstar2

I agree. As Marshall McLuhan said, the Medium is the Message.

This rendition is superior to the Nelson-Gardner verson of the original. Voices less harsh.

  • where can i find a full version to download or watch online?

  • @icedandfrozen Hulu has it for free :) But I must warn you... it kinda sucks. It gets better in Act two though-- the beginning is incredibly stupid.

  • @f0r33ha oh, Hulu is not available where i come from. but i found a copy at a dvd store. i think they had a hard time making it into a movie, thats probably why it was weird. best as a play. thanks anyway :)

  • There's a very touching version of Try To Remember in this film. I wish someone would post it.

  • I CANT FIND THE MOVIE AND I WANT IT BADly

  • @iamthemasterofhell I watched it on Hulu.

  • i did not know they made a movie of the fantasticks it must of flopped in the theators

  • Just watched full movie and loved it! Biased though as I am smitten with Jonathon Morris (plays El Gallo). I thought he was incredibly sexy in that role, especially during the fencing scene. I loved the look and humor of the fim as well, Teller, hee hee. I am not as familiar with the staged version, so am bothered with this version at all. Everything that apparently hindered its simplicity I thought was there to accentuate the idea of smoke and mirrors and things not being what they seem.

  • So romantic and very beautiful.

  • they did, indeed, miss the ENTIRE point of the play....I understand why a director would feel the need to 'bring something new' to his project...but not a play that's been playing for decades ! IF....if the rest of the film had been as simple and sweet as this scene and song, it might have all worked.

  • I love this movie so much

  • Girl's pretty good; Matt - not so much.

  • @zdk2013 matt is amazing r u on crack?!?

  • well the entire idea of the original writing is that it was a strangely simple story, simple set, simple music, that was the entire message of the story... wild romantic love can occur even in the simplest of lives. so if they made it so much more... it loses a lot... :(

  • I am looking for this movie like 4 years!!! I cant find it 'cause I live in Macedonia and I cant watch it please give me some advice please I really wanna watch it please

  • J'adore this song/

  • This is so enchanting! I've never seen the film, so this sent me to Hulu, & I've now watched it twice. I've purchased the DVD. I played Henry in our high school production.

  • not crazy about Luisa's voice, but I love the instrumentation. When I preformed this it was just piano..

  • This is so beautiful!

  • Wow, the script in the movie is nothing like the script in the show. And they cut the best part of El Gallo's last monologue!

"There is a curious paradox that no one can explain. Who understands the secret of the reaping of the grain? Who understands why spring is born out of winter's laboring pain, or why we all must die a bit before we grow again? I do not know the answer, I merely know it's true. I hurt them for this reason, and myself a little bit, too."

  • This movie cuts out the best of everything from the stage version. I was very disappointed in it.

  • does anyone know what year this movie was made i love it and i cant find it anywhere

  • The movie was released in 1995...

    Hope that helps.

    <3

  • the movie was made in 1995 but due to problems with the company they delayed the release till 2000 (or maybe 2001)

  • they were you, they were you, they were you............

  • this song mekes me cry..., all the times!

  • Beautiful.

  • Sorry on the typo. I meant "I haven't" not "I've haven't".

  • If ANYONE has this movie, the ENTIRE THING, could you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE post it. I've haven't seen it since I was little, and I remember liking it very much. THANK YOU.

  • I agree! I've been looking for this wonderful movie up and down everywhere! The library once had it, but someone lost the copy! :'(

I hope someone knows where we can watch it!

  • I've finally checked it out from netflix. It's in my queue, so it'll be a few weeks.

  • Netflix has it, and I'm sure you can get it on eBay. I had a copy of it once that I got from there.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!<3

  • it's the girl from Mr. Hollands Opus! I LOVE HER

  • HAHAHA, that is what I thought when i first saw this movie

  • and the guy from New Kids!!

  • Does anyone know where I could find the soundtrack for this? Or the original cast? I'm in New Zealand and I have looked everywhere, if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • they have the songs on myspace music from the broadway cast, i think you can buy the mp3s too so yeah :)

  • Thanks!

  • ..beloved...they were..are...you!

  • I bought this movie because I saw it live when I was 15...didn't make sense. Then I found it with JOEY!!!! I watch it with my girls and they both love it!

  • I first heard this on one of my parents' "Reader's Digest" album sets, & it was a MAN doing the WHOLE SONG, and I thought it was sooo sweet and gentle and sexy, THEN mom played her old Ed Ames LP & he too did it solo. I was shocked years later to hear it as a duet when I finally saw the play! "A GIRL in it?!?" Still nice though...

  • Holy cow this clip stinks! One of the greatest love songs ever written does not need bad acting and wide open spaces: the writers of the show had it perfect when they did it on a bare stage with no effects and a piano. Perfection.

  • I beg to differ. I have done this incredible show, as El Gallo, in the Round. In any setting, it sizzles. When I finally saw the movie version of The Fantasticks, several decades after I first performed the show, I was struck by how much more the story line was illuminated by the motion picture. The actors are fantastic, both as dramatists, and as musicians. IMHO...

  • I'm really not familar...what is the significance of the red ribbon?

  • The ribbon around her wrist is where El Gallo grabbed her. It symbolizes her sexual attraction to the kind of man she holds as an ideal but would never settle for. Both she and Matt go in search of what they cannot have and this song is representative of growing up for both of them, as they realise they shouldn't chase ideals too fantastic and that they have loved each other all along. It's Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending

  • HOLY COW! Thanks for that EXTREMELY indepth but EXTREMELY helpful comment. I am going to audition for this show and I suppose I should become more familar. This show seems so very magical...I can't wait. Thanks again, friend.

  • Sure. Any time. I've been a major fan of this show ever since my mom did it at community theatre. Lorre Noto's son saw the performance and told her she was the best woman he'd ever seen play Huckleby. I know this show like the back of my hand and if you have any more questions, I will certainly be glad to help. When are the auditions? I have a copy of the script put out through Applause Musical Library and can send you the link to get a cheap copy of it. Can we start a yahoo group for this?

  • Let me just say this: I was in a high school production of The Fantasticks, and hearing our Matt and Luisa sing it actually had me with tears in my eyes on stage. Since then, I have had trouble keeping a dry eye whenever I listen to this song. It's my favorite love song from any musical.

  • I think the simplicity of the stage version was lost in the movie, though I think it is better than no Fantasticks at all...and Jean Louisa Kelley is very sweet. Shame the simplicity wouldn't translate on film.

  • The whole circus/carnival theme didn't fit with the originally bare idea.

  • Could someone tell me what this story is about? I know that "The Fantastics" was a show on Broadway many, many years ago, but I've never known what the show entailed. If anyone could give me information on this, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

  • I watched the film just now. I think what you're trying to say is what is it about? Matt and Louisa are neighbours, and they think their fathers are enimies but really they're good friends and they try to get Matt and Lousia together but with many difficulties.

  • Thank you.

  • I recently watched the actual play..It starts out that these parents want their children married but they know that if they tell their children to get together they will refuse. so they pretend to hate each other. finally they set up a "pretty little raid"(it's really a pretty little rape)& have a bandit kidnap her.then there life stumbles out of control&they go their own ways.&she gets with the bandit&he steals her necklace and she gets back with Matt.read the play if u ever get the chance

  • I'll try. It was an off-Broadway production at the Sullivan Street theater in NYC's Greenwich Village. And it's spelt "Fantasticks." The late Jerry Orbach was the first El Gallo (pronounced guy-oh).

It's a story of two fathers pretending to hate each other so their kids would get together. The original cast CD is still available, and I think you can pick up the story from that.

Try Wiki-ing it, too. The boy and the girl were (the late) Kenneth Nelson and Rita Gardner. It's a great CD.

  • When the moon was young,When the month was May,When the stage was hung for my holiday,

I saw shining lights But I never knew:

They were you. They were you. They were you.

When the dance was done,When I went my way,

When I tried to find rainbows far away,

All the lovely lights Seemed to fade from view:They were you. They were you. They were you. Without you near me,I can't see.

  • When you're near me,Wonderful things come to be. Every secret prayer,Every fancy free,Everything I dared for both you and me.

All my wildest dreams Multiplied by two

    They were you.They were you.

    They were you.

  • "and the fully-orchestrated music does more harm than good." care to justify?

  • Just my opinion...the stage production used piano and harp--nothing else. Just another piece of the "simplicity" lost to the film. I DID enjoy the movie but it wasn't the same emotional experience for me.

  • In our production we included the flute and double bass.

  • I saw this DVD for sale at Big Lots. I need to go back and get it. Have never seen this musical, but I enjoy musicals and Jean Louisa Kelly is so gorgeous!

  • Hey! If anybody else has the rest of the movie, could you please post it? Thanks

  • The simplicity of the stage musical was a LOT of its charm--even this "simplistic" film made the show too complicated--and the fully-orchestrated music does more harm than good. I would like to see it professionally filmed on-stage (with an audience?) because it is THAT production that ran off-Broadway for 42 years!!

  • FYI..."The Fantasticks" is back, perhaps for another 42 years..only now it's ON Broadway at the Jerry Orbach Theatre.

  • i l0VE THiS M0ViE!!!

WEN i FiRST SAW iT i WAS liKE 13, THE M0ViE iS S00000 AMAZiNG!!!

  • why would you ever make this a movie? that seems beyond weird ...

  • This movie was crap, but he did a really fine job!

  • Jo Mac Rocks!!!

  • @jjdashii101 no seriously, where can you find this movie!
