  • Classic 70s dead... prolly my favorite era for the dead.

  • luke skywalker

  • I'm glad Jerry stalled it out in the start because that's a classic great sound, these guys are a crackup in the start when Bob gestures "Now !!

  • to wetzybat, Really!!!

  • @lydia12356 lol i believe everyone i guess he must look better in person than pics

  • Comment removed

  • whos the hot 1 with the ponytail?

  • @weetzybat Bobby

  • @Benm1115 i already looked up pictures when he was young and he doesnt look like that, also his hair wasnt that long

  • @weetzybat search Bob Weir 1972 on google images.....looks like him to me (not to mention I've seen him in person a dozen times)

  • @weetzybat who else would it be besides bob?

  • charfman84, that's disrespectful, go someplace else with that stuff

  • Wow, I never knew that about Mickey's Dad...learn somethin' new every day....n I've been a Dead Head for 30 odd years

  • Like uncle Bobo said...the Dead aren't the best at what they do....they're the only ones who do what they do...

Beatles never had the Dead's range of styles...case closed

  • nothing left to do but smile smile smile...

  • WOW!! ... priceless video ... Pigpen on board, Bob looks like a kid and Jerry's hair isn't gray ... doesn't get better.

  • The look Jerry has on his face at about 4:32 while he plays that solo melts my heart every time!

  • 2 days after Bobby Sands died, they played this and dedicated it to him.

  • wats up with phil here??hes looking especially weird this night

  • @darkstarterrapin his alien cloaking device is fritzing out tonight...

  • (Sorry, MrJbenni; misspelled!)

  • IMrBenni is right; it's about Mickey's dad...you can find the story in any Dead book, or from any of the guys who will talk about it.

  • It is about Mickeys Dad I forget where I read this but it's about His Dad Who was Their manager and ripped them off for Years!!!!

  • gotta say, this song takes on a whole new meaning with the late Jerry Garcia himself singing. You're gone but never forgotten. I was 8 when I was at home 30 minutes from your last set. Always will be rock's longest strangest trip.

  • Missing the "going where the wind don't blow" arrangement. When was that added? 74 era? Very tight version though. Would sound even better in flac!

  • fast version...

  • bob's got a nice butt

  • kent andrade is the right one here this song came out before Pig was dead it is about Mickeys dad fer sure 100% he ripped em off for years just listen to the lyrics

  • I can't believe folks are saying this is about Pig. Yeah, jhilly - Hunter has changed his story over the years.

It's gotta be about Mickey's dad running off with their dough when he was managing them.

    Note that Mickey ain't here.

btw - one of the real pleasures during this period is Bill left to his lonesome, nailing nail down that boogie with some authority.

  • @kentandrade ahhhh...wow..i thought it was about Pig...but i bet you are right..never heard that..

  • @blueroad99 I thought it was about pig also

  • Yeah...he's gone....like this isn't the best dirge that I've ever heard. When I die, I want this played,,,,cuz nothing explains my life better than this. Ahem, also, too.

  • everyone is saying RIP jerry when this song IS about pigpen

why would jerry be singing this about himself 23 years before he died?

  • (s):)

  • The first He's Gone; sounds like its been in the rotation for years. PHAT guitar tone.

  • John Phelps long time school friend Farmington Conn. We remember u!

  • and this whole time i thought he was singing to me

  • RIP jerry, your music will play on forever.

  • Lord he's gone. RIP Jerry

  • rip jerry

  • RIP Jerry

  • RIP - Miss you Jerry !!

  • rip amy w

  • He's gone

"He's Gone," as originally written, referred to the disappearance of Mickey Hart's father, Lenny Hart, who was acting as the band's manager, with a good deal of money. (See interview in Relix, vol. 5, #2, p. 24.) Since then, the song has become riddled with meaning, played often quite tenderly when someone close to the band dies. The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics.

    By David Dodd

  • @eaglewingpalace

I have read that Hunter admitted that the song was actually written about Pigpen, but he would not say that at the time because Pig was still with them.

  • It was Micky's father who 'managed' and ripped them off in the later 60's. I've never heard anything about Billy's father managing...

  • I believe it was billys father when he manage them as the warlocks in very early 60's

  • Young ones of small wisdom its all about one of the band members fathers rippen off in their early years

  • no its about losing your self on acid

"nothing left to do but smile smile smile"

also steal your face was a reference of being unknowingly dosed, and enough to steal your face right off your head!

  • It can't be about Pig he's in the dern video!

  • This song isn't about Pig or anyone else dying. It's about Micky's dad taking off with all their money - "he's gone."

  • Occam's razor and all that...why anyone would think this is about Pigpen when he's playing the Hammond B3 on this vid is beyond me...

  • @vicparis Where did you get that informantion from? because this song can be interuprated in many different ways..

  • Lost the Love of my Life recently :( This song makes me cry everytime!

  • @1105tnutt huh? not sure I follow...

  • damn i miss pig.

    "nthins gonna bring him back"

    he never left

  • Nothin gonna bring him back~ :-(

  • and whatès wrong with being a hippieÉÉÉ

  • what a douche

  • rat in a drainditch dogs in a pile nothin left to do but smile smile smile

  • @skbhopps Cat on a tin roof.....?

  • @skbhopps scratch my spine , cluck....

  • Bob is so hot.

  • Nothin like a vision of Jerry and Pig!!

  • nice, bob's playin' his '355. Jerry on his aligator strat and a way too pig' ignorin'n the reaper knockin' on his door! Man this was a great period ('74's my fav year)

  • Bob at :37

  • good ol' mutha fu%#in' GratefulDead!

  • My favorite era for live GD, but all eras are good. Maybe because Europe '72 was my first GD LP.

  • It's hard to watch him sing that line....

  • Steal your face right off your head...... Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile! :-) The very best in American music.....

  • The Dead are the best band alltime

  • the video is outta sight. dead were much more than this tho. when they rolled, the music went on forever. sidenote;: got to hear them New Year;s 1970-71; @ Winterlandx I .think it was them. Anyways, these guys were pretty good, made me dance in my shoes. Thot I was in contact with the lead geetar player. Maybe I was, but found out that lots of others felt the same way. Didn't think nothin of it. Whatta gonna do? O Well. Main Thang is the message. These guys had some kind of message:

  • @pawball too much acid?

  • this song was about Mickey's father no?

  • @evilledud from what I have always heard, yes.

  • @evilledud yes

  • wow, Pigpen, Jerry playing a Strat, Bob on a Gibson 335, Phil on the early Alembic-Fender amps with tie died covers. This is some vintage shit.

  • miss u jerry your music will always live on

  • Nobody can rock a pair of glasses like Phil Lesh

  • I think I will be missing Jerry and Pigpen forever. Two of the most underrated greats of their time...

  • I miss you bro 1971-2004 we sure had some killer times at the Vegas shows in the 90s

  • i think 22 people just dont undrerstand yet give them time brother if they ever see the light thare going to be kicking themselfs in there shit suckers

  • 21 people suck shit

  • nothin left to do but smile, smile, smile.....;)

  • Europe "72

  • early arrangement! "Goin where the wind dont blow so strange" part is missing...its usually right after the solo. when was that part added?? anyone?

  • @otieg Good observation haha. I have the May 4 show and that He's Gone has the bridge. So it was def added sometime between 4/17 & 5/4. But it still doesn't have the vocal outro, I have a July show with the vocal outro. Then the extended jam comes a couple months after that.

  • @randeezydizzle ...really? you have a scripted dead show?

  • early arrangement! "Goin where the wind dont blow so strange" part is missing...its usually right after the solo. when was that part added?? anyone?

  • @otieg i think they just forgot the bridge this time, it was the very first public performance of He's Gone...

  • Boy that FELT GOOD ! Thank you oh so much! am very ill and using all these tunes for my un medicated pick me up! Works every time ! Thanks again Rick In Wichita Kansas

  • Pigpen!

  • What kinda crazy bass is phil using

  • Comment removed

  • @kukster75 the song was written about Mickey Hart's dad...he was the dead's manager at a point and disapeared with a bunch of their cash.. Mickey left the band for a while after that. That's why he's not playing at this show, which is also the first time they performed the song

  • Listening to Hes gone, thinking of Avery Rainy singing this song to me as we laughed and she danced in front of me singing into the spoon or brush. She is such a beauty, but someone elses. She was the Alpha and Omega off my heart, still is truth be told ( In the ladies dep't, she doesnt hold a candle to my son). I have my memories and the Grateful Dead when I want to be with her again. Thank you Avery.

  • is bob even plugged in? sorry to say it but when I saw them live i could never hear his guitar

  • @vbvini yeah hes playing rhythm along with the keys...listen for him.

  • @vbvini in Phil's book he said their soundman in the late 80's, early 90's (i think?) was "an aspiring guitarist" and wanted to be in the band in Bobby's place, so he always turned down the volume on Bob's guitar. They realized it after a while and sacked him for it. at least his vocals were always turned on

  • this makes me awfully happy =)

  • one of the three hundred best songs the dead ever did

  • THE BEST SONG THE DEAD EVER DID............

  • THERE IS A GOD IN HEAVEN!

who has 'you win again' fr0m these shows?

  • Who remembers Jerry Garcia in Half Baked??

  • @GBcheeseheadGB Jim Bruer's first time getting high! "I feel like Jerry Garcia is playing guitar inside my ears"

  • This guitar was his famous 1960 "Harley" Strat that he played in 1972 and part of '73 only

  • Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange.

  • This song is taken on a whole new meaning since Jerry is gone. RIP my friend

  • I luv your screen name!!!!!

  • I luv your screen name!

  • anybody know anything about the guitar jerry is playing? looks like a strat, but other than that i don;t know too much

  • Haha. People who hate the Dead are ignorant. They are the best band ever, this is not even my opinion check out the facts. More Money made than from Live Concerts than any other band. A larger repertoire than any other band. More genres than any other band. Longer shows than any other band. They have more songs based on tempo alone than any other band: The Eleven, The Seven, Main Ten(Playing In The Band). They play country, jazz, blues, roots rock, ballads, mo town(3-24-74 TLEO).

  • @Hashjihadful word up! Always Grateful Always Dead
