The Monkees were great actors. I used to watch them when I was as a kid. But the music is just a fake. Peter Tork could not play any instrument at all.
There music was real. Every band has studio musicians at one time or another. They never had anyone sing for them, it was all their own vocals, and they played their own instruments. In the beginning they were under the musical control of a butt-hole who wouldnt allow them to play their own instruments, so when they finally managed to get rid of him they did what they wanted from then on. If The Monkees are fakes, then so are about a half of a billion other famous bands.
I did too, and when he came to watch our school musical of 'Bugsy Malone' I could barely contain myself!
He was a really genuine guy too.
Reminds me of 1970's summer holidays, White Horses, Zorro, Why Don't You, Flash Gordon, Lassie, Champion The Wonder Horse & those hysterical Public Information films LOL.
I named my son after a certain Cannonball Express driver too *blushes*.
Thanks for posting this!!! I just love the Monkees!! I got to see them in my hometown, when they were much older but they still sounded great! They're all good but I just LOVE Mickey's voice!! :)
I was 14 yrs. old when the Monkees came onto the scene. YEARS later they made a come-back, a friend of my son asked if she could record off of my albums. When she saw them she was amazed...she said " These are originals"!!!!!!
I was a child of the 1970's when reruns of TV shows from the 60's took off. The Monkees was then and still is one of my favorite TV shows. This song is one of my favorites!
"She" by The Monkees, along with many other garage band songs of the 60s, set the tone for the punk rock sound. This song was a detour from The Monkess usual "pop" and "country rock" song flavors.
Haha, '...all of my sweet and low'. That's funny but I think he's actually saying "She Devoured all my sweet love", but it does sound like he's saying 'sweet and low'. Lol.
I had a friend in the 60s who looked just like Mickey, his name was Stacey and he caught hell for that name and we nicknamed him Tinkerbell! He was funny and it seemed like all the teasing never bothered him. Great song by a band who defined a generation in the late 60s thier music was great and I think they were made fun of becuase of the show. They still are great and thier music always brings back memories.
TheWoodstockChannel, that's perfectly fine. And don't apologize. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a man crush. I love Micky too. How can you not love him? He's sexy, adorable and funny.
funny as it may seems , i had a girlfiend back then that treated me the same way she said she would never hurt me but she did . she got her's and life go's on .
My friend's daughter who is probably about 15 or so has big crushes on Mickey Dolenz from back then and Dave Gilmour from Floyd's Meddle period. I was like, "Hate to break it to you, but they're both old enough to be your grandpa". Haha.
Awesome band. Great songs. Heard an interview with Nesmith a long time ago, the interviewer kept asking about the band, and would the band get back together, would they tour. He set her straight: The Monkees were ACTORS, not a band, not musicians (except for himself), didn't play their own instruments. Despite that they were a fabulous band, IMHO! Saw Peter Tork perform last year, myself. :-)
I don't believe you simply because Mike would never say that. Peter is one hell of a musician-he plays 12 different intruments! He and Mike were both accomplshed muscians when they were cast for The Monkees. Mickey did have to take drum lessons but did know the guitar and Davy was a Tony Award nominated singer and actor on Broadway, known for his briliant performance as the Artful Dodger in "Oliver!".
Oh and the Monkees have toured since the show went off the air..in 86, 97, and 2001.
Hi SueWNY, I tried looking up the archive, but couldn't find it on the NPR site. It was a radio interview with Terry Gross on NPR more than 8 years ago I'd say. While I cannot directly quote Mike, he was emphatic that they were hired actors. Hey I love them too, don't get me wrong, enormously charismatic, and great performers.
That's odd that Mike would say that because he's said in the past that Peter had the most musicality and that they were hired for their playing and the other two for their singing and acting backgrounds. The only thing I've ever heard Nesmith say emphatically is that they indeed were HIRED for the show, which is stating the obvious.
In fact, he said he was NOT an actor so that contradicts what you say he supposedly said.
I love the Monkees and recently discovered the Cowsills videos on Youtube, didn't know they were the inspiration for the Partridge Family. I can't believe it but I'm currently more obsessed with the Cowsills than the Monkees!
The Cowsills are indeed cool. That said, the Monkees are still way at the top for me. Lately, I've been rediscovering the Beau Brummels- fantastic stuff. Check them out if you haven't yet!
Robertmmm7 thanks! I just checked out the Beau Brummels and plan to watch all their videos. I love that song that goes "Laugh Laugh, I thought I'd die..." it's great. I wish the Monkees would have another tour so I could see them, and I wouldn't mind seeing the Beau Brummels either, wonder if they're still performing?
Wasn't this song originally featured on an episode where they helped out a bankrupt circus or carney? It's been years since I've heard this song so I'm not sure.
You can find quite a few episodes on youtube. I found the entire first season on here and most of second season. You can also check on ebay. They have both seasons on dvd. That's where I got mine. I hope I helped you.
Do some research DEEP177 and you will find out that the Monkees were never really a fake band and that from the start they became more and more of a real band...that's one of te things that's so neat about them! You will love the Monkees more and more the more you learn about them!

I agree with you deep the little monkees were like a cartoon band with top songwriters and musicians playing for them. You can hear the great songwriter Carol King singing in the background on one the hit songs she wrote for the fake monkees.
The Monkees did write some of their own songs, and I like Carole King but I am glad the Monkees did covers of hers and other songwriters' compositions because I happen to like hearing the Monkees' versions.

I've seen pictures of him in it and he said they dyed his hair blonde for some reason...then when the show was over he got made fun of when he went back to regular school and his hair was growing out with the dark roots. Poor Micky, I want to give him a hug!
very cool bro! Grew up on The Monkeys. I can appreciate all your hard work,I put my wife through HELL putting ours together, Please have a look. 5 stars to you and more...
I felt so bad for Davy in this vid gettin smacked like that it looked like it just might hurt. but i thought it was funny to see Peter fling lol luv these guys.
They were such a unique talent, they complemented each other so well (what a lucky find for the producers to find four guys, out of hundreds of pics, with that kind of talent and chemistry). One in a hundred million shot! There talent and music have stood the test of time and will forever! Thanks for posting! And thanks Monkees for giving us so much joy! HEY! HEY!
LOL - me too! I'm not the only one, either. My little sister and I have to face the tragedy of having no one our own age knowing what the heck we're talking about. (Heh - my Mp3 player is a mix of Monkees songs, grunge rock, symphony, and random remixes from the net. Weirder still.)
I also grew up on the monkee's while I was @ my babysitter's I 'm 27 yrs old now & I'm just in the past yr gettin fallin back in luv w/ ths Monkee's & my brother's think im nuts for likin them. The beachboys second alltime fave 70's band after the Monkee's so i know how your felling good music. p.s. i don't think your weird @ all
I still cannot believe people still think they cannot/did not play or that there is even a question about it. How can that myth still be going around after 40 years?
as with most rock groups at the time, the instruments on the albums were usually played by 'sessions muscians', since they were typically the best guitarist, drummer, bass player, etc.
on the show, of course, NOBODY was playing the instruments, as were most 'video' presentations (like on 'the monkees' or any prime time variety show).
in concert, they played their own instruments. folks forget that all were musicians and/or singers before the show began.
when i was little i went to a catholic school and we had to pick a middle name for the conformation so one night i was watching the monkeys and picked peter he was my favorite monkey

HEY! HEY!

Omg!
I grew up with the Monkees!
I like them even more than The Beetles.
I'm only Sixteen and my mp3 player consists of The Monkees and The Beach Boys!
I still think I am a weird teenager :D
xXxmastawongxXx 3 years ago
LOL - me too! I'm not the only one, either. My little sister and I have to face the tragedy of having no one our own age knowing what the heck we're talking about. (Heh - my Mp3 player is a mix of Monkees songs, grunge rock, symphony, and random remixes from the net. Weirder still.)
Peter's probably my fav Monkee.
(PS - you misspelled Beatles)^_~

Did they actually play their own instruments?
RonPaul2008dotcomluv 3 years ago
I still cannot believe people still think they cannot/did not play or that there is even a question about it. How can that myth still be going around after 40 years?

A: A Simpsons television show episode where Marge is shown in her childhood years.
RonPaul2008dotcomluv 3 years ago
Your answer is something you saw in a satirical cartoon television comedy? That's priceless.

as with most rock groups at the time, the instruments on the albums were usually played by 'sessions muscians', since they were typically the best guitarist, drummer, bass player, etc.
on the show, of course, NOBODY was playing the instruments, as were most 'video' presentations (like on 'the monkees' or any prime time variety show).
in concert, they played their own instruments. folks forget that all were musicians and/or singers before the show began.

Thank you for the clarification.
RonPaul2008dotcomluv 3 years ago 2
Studio musicians were used mostly for the recordings, but the Monkees played their own instruments for the live gigs.
