In my opinion the reliability problem with the M16/M4 is caused by poor ammo quality manufactured by the lowest bidder, coupled with the direct impingement system. I think the solution is to update all existing rifles with short stroke gas systems, and manufacture new ammo with cleaner faster burning power to compensate for the shorter barrel of the M4. If it wasn't for the Hague Convention I'd say to use Ballistic Tips.
@Treblaine I'd have to agree with you on the durability of the M16 and AK47 ...the AK was originally designed to withstand the harsh Russian weather (e.g mud, snow, water, etc) ..if u've seen anything on the Spetsnaz, one of their main exercise is doing pushups balancing on the magazine alone, im not sure if an M16 could handle that weight and beating..and the internal system of an AK47 calls for it to still function and fire when clogged with mud, dirt, etc.
@2cutthroatterrorist i think it would depend on the situation. if you are in the field where you have to fire at longer ranges i think i would still take the m-16 (not the M-4) but if you were in an urban combat area where you sill have some stopping power but the AK-74 s also a little more combat and easier to move around with. so yeah i think then i would go with the AK-74.
@TheSkaterGuitar if you are in combat and you get one (you're issued weapn malfunctions, run out of ammo ect.) then yes you can use an Enemy AK-47. but once you are out of the situation and you are back at base then you would continue to use you're issued weapon. Besides i would want an M4 or M16A2 over an AK any day.
@MrAppleseed88 the 5.45 is a nice round, not as good as the 5.56 with the soviets had to copy form,. the 7.62 is dog shit and it just pass though, which you can plug up with a tampon and still be combat effective. 7.62 is too heavy, drops like a rock, and you can only spray and pray with it, that is why the soviets copied our 5.56

I saw some marines using aks. I guess because they are so readily availible and the ammo is very plentiful. And im sure they are more reliable than an m4 especially in the desert. I take a russian ak74 over an m4 anyday.

M16 rifles are ridiculously hard to maintain, one reason why America's Military Industrial Complex has used the rifle series for 50 years, it's "jobs for the boys" replacement parts re-arming and so on.
Jim Sullivan the guy who actually co-invented the M16 has gone on the record to say the AK-47 is a better rifle - in all aspects.
The M16 is not ridiculously hard to maintain and they are not jam-o-matic peices of shit, I prefer the AK but i do not hate on the M16/Ar15... I own both and i know that they are both great rifles

I took my AK out today to a firing range. I was shooting at 100-yards. Now mind you, I consider myself an average shot. I don't consider myself a marksman by any measure! I put all rounds in the lethal zone of the target. It can be quite accurate in the right hands and in my hands, accurate enough!
How can it be close quarters ? War DOESNT happend in desert ... AK is efficient in 400 yards . There isnt mutch to discuse If you can hit in the head from 100 yards then your gonna hit the target from 2 or 3 hundred but noone really trys to take the ak out of its limits so its usualy used from 200 yards and closer
The AK-47 is a great weapon. The M16 is more accurate but since most firefights take place at less than 100m, I'll take the AK47 every time. In Jungle terrain, AK47 rules the M16...

M16 rifles are ridiculously hard to maintain, one reason why America's Military Industrial Complex has used the rifle series for 50 years, it's "jobs for the boys" replacement parts re-arming and so on.
Jim Sullivan the guy who actually co-invented the M16 has gone on the record to say the AK-47 is a better rifle - in all aspects.

He says it is too hard to maintain and too unreliable. It is an added (unnecessary) burden for US forces they can bear only due to their high standard of training (expensive) and robust armoury logistics (also expensive).
Just because M16/AR15 series have superb ergonomics doesn't make it tough enough.

@Choncho203 Now the key area the M16 (and variants) fail is SUSTAINED fire, as in it cannot handle more than about 15-rounds per minute before reliability plummets. AK47 easily handles 250 rounds per minute.
The way the US Army & Marine Infantry Squad are structured it really need a better suppressive-fire capability from every rifleman: something more than a rifle but less than a light machine-gun, like the BAR.

WHAT?! 15 rounds per minute?! where the hell did you get that information? Havent you seen the videos of people spraying out a 100-150 round mag in a few seconds with no problems? I only Have a semi auto and ive shot at least 100 rounds out of mine within a minute with no problems, i have also gone 400 rounds of cheap steel cased ammo without cleaning with no malfuntions

No, not 15rpm CYCLIC rate, 15rpm SUSTAINED fire-rate.
By that it means fire more than 15 shots through the weapon in a minute (either in 15 round burst then wait 58 seconds or shot every 4 seconds) then the reliability of the weapon is compromised. This is an inevitable part of the direct-impingement gas-system, every shot blasts hot gas into the receiver heating everything up, evaporating oil and depositing soot.
You can fire at 15 shot/sec PERPETUALLY.

@Choncho203 You talk of owning AK and AR15, I presume semi-auto only civi versions? Well AR15 is very good as single-shot rifle in a clean peacetime environment. Especially a relatively new AR, handled with care and is shot only moderately often considering the personal burden of high ammo prices.
But a military assault rifle is designed for full auto, firing thousands of rounds per deployment and expected to be in service over a decade or more. AK47 can take that abuse easily, M16 suffers.

I never said it was made in WW2, I said is was being designed in WW2, late in the war. It was patented in 1947, hence the name AK-47, Automatic Kalashnikov model 1947. It was officially adopted by the Soviet's Red Army in 1949 and replaced the SKS(which was designed and used in late WW2 and was the platform much of the AK was based on)

That's because when Kalashnikov made it, it was meant for all out combat (facing large groups of enemies). You're not going to bother taking the time to aim as much when your knee deep in heavy fire. It only matters when your guns reliable in the most harsh conditions and it has enough stopping power.

I took my AK out today to a firing range. I was shooting at 100-yards. Now mind you, I consider myself an average shot. I don't consider myself a marksman by any measure! I put all rounds in the lethal zone of the target. It can be quite accurate in the right hands and in my hands, accurate enough!

How can it be close quarters ? War DOESNT happend in desert ... AK is efficient in 400 yards . There isnt mutch to discuse If you can hit in the head from 100 yards then your gonna hit the target from 2 or 3 hundred but noone really trys to take the ak out of its limits so its usualy used from 200 yards and closer

The AK-47 is a great weapon. The M16 is more accurate but since most firefights take place at less than 100m, I'll take the AK47 every time. In Jungle terrain, AK47 rules the M16...

yep you maybe right about the combat engagement distance. dang. you can put an AK-47 in a kid's hand and he wont be able to break it. the M-16 otherwise, you put it in a kids hand, it may only function for only a few days. at the most. though the AK-47's powerful round is twice that of the M-16.

Ok, I have a M16A2 and a AK47, Trust me, If you know 'anything' and i mean anything about shooting and you apply it to a AK47 its accuracy barly increaces, The M16 is a great tool because the more you learn the more accurate it gets. Im at the point now where 200yrds my shots are just as tight if you viced it down. AK's are a thing of the past

It can get kind of loud depending on what kind of muzzle break you have. But yeah, the AK is not loud at all compared to others.
