This is an brilliant video dude, but I think I'm more interested in how you accomplished zero-latency recording? :) Any DSP I've used in the past, I've always had to mute the monitor track and listen directly from my kit. Any help would be very much appreciated, cheers man. :)
@DavidLeeThrower I've got a separate external sound card (M-Audio Fast Track) so it enables me to turn my latency to a level in which I get no latency what so ever. Not going to lie though, even the m-audio struggles sometimes. Getting external sound card was the best thing I've done really. Hope this helps!
Hi dude soz to be a pain again. I noticed if you do a voice of 50hz it seems to have that effect like your talking down a cardboard tube. I notice in Remembrance of the Daleks they don't sound like that. Is it possible they sift that noise out or the ring mod frequency changes with their voice in pitch? I'd love your opinion, I've searched high and low. Thanks.
@Agui007 Something which a lot of people don't think about is EQ. By altering the EQ you can change virtually the whole sound. It'd be worth having a play and seeing what sound you can achieve. Another technique is using distortion and then ring modulating over that.. It gives it a bit of a thicker sound. Just some ideas for you! Hope this helps!
@timetunnelpro Something else that has come to mind, the quality of microphone, possible hum modulation filter to bring out the clarity of voice. If you talk with a modulation at 50hz you need to speak loud and clearly but it will leave that electric hum, something the BBC managed to either filter or they adjusted to wave to match that of the modulator.
This is a brilliant video and has been so helpful! :D I was wondering if you know what frequency could be used for the daleks from the peter cushing movies
@Ashleywoolston Not entirely sure but i'd guess around 27-30 ish. It's hard to tell as not much was documented about those particular voices. I am fond of them though!
Hi there, here's a tough one, how do you do a Dalek voice from Remembrance of the Daleks without the voice sounding droney ? I think their voices are near 50hz but their voices sound sharper in resolution. If you listen carefully to one you'll know what I mean :)
@Agui007 A big thing about sound is the EQ. You'd cut out a lot of the low end and focus on the high end. The Remembrance voices tend to work a lot better the higher you do your Dalek voice. The lower voices tend to lack the same punch and richness. You're correct, around 48-50HZ tends to work best on the voices. That's my advice mess with the EQ until it sounds right
That's the best software-based ring modulator Dalek voice I've ever heard! I'd be interested to hear what a New Paradigm/Supreme Dalek voice sounds like through this - it requires a modulation rate of 25.64 Hz and a "constipated Dalek" voice.
@timetunnelpro Have a look at my Youtube channel for "Dalek voice changer/modulator frequency test". I run through the most common frequencies through an analogue ring modulator. Unfortunately Youtube won't let me post a direct link.
@MegaWayneD I've actually been on your channel before when looking for ring modulators to use inside my Dalek. You've got a terrific sounding modulator there.. You're Paradigm voices are superb! I've got my friend James to make me a similar modulator to use inside my pepperpot!
I'm using the same program (Reaper, portable version), the same plugin with the same regulations, and a Shure SM58 microphone that works perfectly fine. I put the modulation frequency to 20hz and 40hz on the Ring Modulator, and I don't sound like a Dalek, not even close to one. What am I doing wrong?
@AngelofKaos Often the way to make it sound more Dalek-ish is to turn your mic input up.. Or the output on the ring modulator setting.. This will give it a much thicker Dalek sound. Remember that the HZ is in the black box under the settings and not to the right of the mod frequency. This is the only solution i can think of.. Make sure you've copied the settings displayed on my video. Hope this was of some help to you.
Thanks for this tutorial. I decided to give it a try but I can't get anything near the results you show here. I am using a RODE NTG-2 and have followed the steps you did to the letter. Did you do anything else to get these effects that you didn't show in the video, as I am stumped as to why mine sound so poor using this technique...
@JonathanVickery The main thing I find when recording Dalek voices is that the higher your mic input is, the better and thicker the voices sound. It's usually a case of fiddling with the volume. Also the louder your voice is effects the result also. I hope this solves your problem, there were no other effects on top of the ring modulator.
@timetunnelpro: Thanks for the reply. I had been using Windows 7 for my initial tests but tried my Mac this afternoon and got a better result. Still not close to yours though. I think I need to speak a lot louder though which may be my issue as you mention. I will wait until the house is empty and then really go for it:) Will post back how it goes - thanks.
There are a lot of alternate effects put on it apart from the ring modulation. I know that there is some phaser in there, but beyond that I'm not sure what else there is. I can't wait to see what timetunnelpro can come up with for the new Daleks!
I love this. I just may have to download this software for my own personal amusement.
