  • what made you want to move to japan? it must have been life changing?

  • Comment removed

  • really nice place

  • that house is creepy... "the grudge"

  • Whydo the dress up statutes?

  • omg GO INSIDE

  • why wont you bring us in the abandoned houses? .. :( pleaseeee!

  • This is where I'm going to retire. =x

  • I WANTED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE HOUSE. NOT THE TREE.....

  • if this house is situated somewhere in europe, homeless people had occupied it already

  • Japanese poeples are place a high priority on the old culture.

  • i wanna move there! amazing house.

  • I would offer 200k British Pound Sterling...

  • Sounds like you really want to live there ;-) I don't blame you, it is beautiful. I'd like to live in an older style Japanese house with big wooden beams on the ceiling. Japanese traditional carpentry is pretty impressive too.

  • I like that place.. i wonder if the propperty has been sold

  • why is this place empty?

  • How are things (people, culture, way of life) different from Japan than the western world?

  • @Arvak777 The differences are many and profound. In a nutshell though Japan is a "group" centered society while much of the Western world is more oriented towards the individual. This has profound meaning in terms of lifestyle, values and family. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • wow, Kurt. this is exactly where I would want to live if I were to live in Japan. nestled in the mountains with the sounds of nature. incredible.

  • This is a beautiful place. It's too bad you don't live there! You could put your business in the front building!

  • the grudge lady lives in there. But what a nice house :)

  • i wouldn't go in there, have you not seen "the grudge"?

  • I shall move into that House, right by the mountainsides of Japan!

  • @iEmbarcadero Sounds like a great idea! ~Kurt :-)

  • @iEmbarcadero es una casa grande, la comparto contigo

  • just beautiful....

  • Thanks for the post, I remeber some of the places where I walked around in Japan, but nothing this as beautiful! I LOVE that old house! So heavenly!

  • thank you for your respect of japanese life.

  • if you look any closer you'll see SADAKO!!! ( from ringu!)

  • Huge shame it's empty. Beautiful house.

  • where is everybody? ha?

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Just Perfect!!!!!!

With that tree at the front enterance and that garden, the beautiful nature surrounding it, the hills and the green around its the perfect home to spend your Old time in Peace.

If you are planing to live there may I suggest to Buy It !!!!!!

Because I am going to look for a Place exactly like this one for my Old age Peace

  • This was the type of video I was looking for in essence of seeing some of the country side. I have yet to goto japan primarily due to cost at the moment. But when I do, these are the types of things my wife and I are interested in seeing. Thank you very much for providing a wonderful look at a beautiful site.

  • @xavier0307 I am so happy that you could find the type of video you were looking for. I share your interest in the countryside settings of Japan and I am delighted that we could share this experience together via the wonder of the Internet. Have a great weekend! ~Kurt :-)

  • Indeed what a great place to live. I love how (at least in the countryside) plants in japan are left to grow so near to the buildings.

    Countryside all the way!

Oh to live far out in those hills...

  • @marblemill The countryside is indeed a special place. I'm happy that you enjoyed the video and I hope to bring more such sights to YouTube in the future. -Kurt :-)

  • what a beautiful place. There's an abandoned house near where I live (in NY) and I recently snuck inside. Abandoned houses are so intriguing and often more beautiful than occupied ones. I think the emptiness of places like these invites our imaginations to form all these ideas of what could have been or what could be in this empty space. They are so mysterious.

  • Hello boardDF, I agree with your observations regarding the interest of abandoned buildings. It does indeed seem that there are stories wrapped-up in these places just waiting for an imaginative mind to ponder. -Kurt :-)

  • This is the kind of remote village I'd like to live in in japan. But its unlikely it will ever happen. My japanese isnt good enough and I have no natural skill with languages.

    But I can dream ^_^

And if I can never move to japan I can always decorate my home in a traditional japanese way. Bringing japan to me. heh

  • Hello TheRoadGoesEverOn, I agree that it is very sad to see these old houses neglected and unused. Old places like this can be had rather cheap depending upon the location. I think that a house like this could be had for less than $100,000 USD in this particular location. If it were further out in the hills the price would go down fast. -Kurt :-)

  • Thats cheaper than most homes here in teh UK O_O

All I'd need would be a mortgage and I could get it.

    Its a dream I have ^_^

  • @softypapa I've seen that many Japanese homes are considered depreciating assets, and combined with the remote location, I'm not surprised it is probably $100k or less. Even in the cities (excluding Tokyo) there can be homes had for $220k or less. Living in the countryside would be wonderful there. My wife, on the other hand, may find it antiquated (she's Japanese and prefers modern homes).

  • @eskercurve My wife feels the same way. I suspect that I might one day buy or rent a small farm in the countryside to enjoy on weekends though I doubt that my wife would agree to live in such a place. This sentiment seems common in Japan and I have met very few Japanese who share this interest which seems quite strong in many foreigners I have met or spoken with. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • a reason why many old houses in counryside are abandan is that you can not live conveniently. I think there is no shopping mall near there, and most of all, traditional way of living culture in countryside is vanished after WW2...It is very sad. I am japanese and wish I could live there...anyway thanks for posting. I am very pleased to know somebody praises my country, espcialy foreiger.

  • Hello madmax7272jj, Thank you for shaing about the reasons these lovely old homes are often left empty. It's very interesting to hear your perspective and ideas. -Kurt :-)

  • Looks like an old Samurai House to me . Did you see Tom Cruise ? lol

  • h aha! well he wouldn't have to duck below the tree to get in the front door! lol

  • Jesus Christ paradise O_O

  • ok thanks

  • Hey you think that place is for sale?

  • Hello darkwolflord, The home may indeed be on the market though it is hard to tell as many Japanese homes which are being sold do not display any real estate sign or advertisement. -Kurt :-)

  • it's a very nice place, I'd buy it if someone would know about it more...

by reading other comments, it's strange that there is not much people living there, maybe if someone moved there it would be nice...

that place and some others are great place I would like to visit if I ever go to Japan..

    thanks for sharing!

  • Yeah, I gotta say, that house is a Japanese horror film in the making.

  • If you can get any footage fomr some long narrow (rectangular) Zen style gardens with gravel bases. I'd love to see some. I'm getting ready to start building one influenced by thiose gardens in the back rectangular plot that I have in my back yard. :) BTW I love all the country side You've been sharing lately. I'm glad you are there and sharing :)

    ~Feile

  • Hello Feile, I will certainly try to make a video of a Zen style garden if i happen to visit one. Thanks for the suggestion and kind words and best of luck with your new garden! -Kurt :-)

  • Peek the camera over the wall for a view of the secret garden :) I bet it looks very neat Inside! Old style landscape I'm SURE. I'd be envious of how a garden like that. Colorado doesn't have enough moisture to keep a garden as nice as I bet that one is. :)

  • i'm going to japan in 3 weeks :D i hope i get to see stuff like that :O

reminds me of the grudge too.

  • Hello dondondodo, Congrats on your upcoming travels to Japan! I do hope that you will have many wonderful experiences. If you plan to make videos then please send me a link when you are ready to share! -Kurt :-)

  • Wow! Thanks for the vid!

  • Beautiful!

  • It's really beautiful, indeed.

It's situated with fresh air, surrounded in nature; has exquisite architecture; and the ghosts are homely as well.

    XD

  • Hello XD, I like your description which captures well the impressions I enjoyed while visiting the home. -Kurt :-)

  • The house is a really beautiful example of an old, traditional Japanese country estate, but it also seems like it came out of an old J-horror film. lol.

Imagine the view of it at night...

Maybe it should be bought by a movie company in Japan for a future filming spot. XP

But the house IS an aged beauty, I must admit. lol.

  • It certainly does have that spooky feel. Perhaps I should go back and film it at night to see what it is like after dark. -Kurt :-)

  • You should.

It would probably be pitch dark to see...as it is abandoned...but it's exciting to see if anything happens...haha... XD

  • Looks like a perfect place for country living in Japan. I love the decorative bricks in the wall, and the tree in the front! I hope someone works on the place soon, so it doesn't fall into further disrepair.

    ~Kat

  • Hi Kat, There are several such houses in this same village which appear empty yet cared for. I suspect that as this village is not too far from the city the family members are therefore better able to return from time-to-time to care for the place and perhaps enjoy a nice weekend in the countryside! -Kurt :-)

  • Wow videos like this make me really want to go to Japan.

Maybe I can rent one of these when I go to Japan for a year :P

  • Hello hapsap, I hope that you will have a chance to come to Japan. I suspect that if you try you can likely find such places to rent. I have heard that there are even some real estate agents who specialize in renting and selling such old properties. Good luck with your travel plans! -Kurt :-)

  • Thanks for this video Kurt. What a lovely home. Does this little settlement have a name? So peaceful and serene...............Love it....Doug :o)

  • Hello Doug, I think that the village is called Kamiochiai though I may not be remembering it correctly. It is located roughly 45 minutes from Shizuoka City along the narrow road leading to Ikawa. There are probably less than 20 homes in the entire village though many of the places are empty. If you or anyone is every wants to visit this village (or any other in our area) and you are in the area then just let me know and I will be happy to take you or prepare a detailed map. -Kurt :-)

  • Haunted, methinks.

  • Hello watcher80, I suspect that this home has a long and interesting past and would be a great candidate for ghosts. -Kurt :-)

  • Yeah, that really would be a good place to live; fresh air, lot's of space, a garden.

I am pretty used to city life but, there are benefits of inaka life.

  • Hello spydermurphy, I like the idea of country living very much and hope to try it sometime in the future. I suspect that this type of life has its challenges just like any other though I am certainly ready to give it a try. -Kurt :-)

  • A friend of mine did that.

The family that owns it gave him a real good deal since they got some extra money and someone to look after the place too.

Worked out really well for both parties.

Could be a perfect opportunity for the both of you. And I'm sure your daughter would love having a nice garden to play in...

Nothing to lose, everything to gain. for everyone.

    Sounds sweet to me.

    : )

  • I have a friend who did this as well. The family who owned the old place were shocked that anyone would want to live there. Rent was set very cheap which left plenty of money to fix the place up. Their old home has since been featured in several Japanese magazines and they are really enjoying their country lifestyle. It might be awhile before we can pull something like this off as we want to stay close to my wife's parents during their older years while they need the help. -Kurt :-)

  • Brilliant place.

Maybe the owners would let you rent it ?

    Thanks for the clip!

  • Hi Peekingduck, Great idea! I would certainly love to rent or even buy one of these old places sometime in the future. There is another empty place across the river from this house which is really nice as it includes an entire farm compound with out buildings, plots of land and a lovely scenic setting! Thanks again for the nice suggestion and for watching and commenting! -Kurt :-)

  • Hello Peekingduck, A old fellow in next village over seemed happy to hear that I was thinking of moving to this area some day. He told me that there are many empty homes and seemed excited that someone was interested in setting up house in his village. -Kurt :-)

  • Brilliant !

    That's excellent news!

I believe the ball just started rolling.

Some of these things are just meant to happen.

    Thanks for keeping me posted.

I really think you live in 'real Japan' more than most of us. Soon I bet you'll be living in a really awesome house.

  • Thanks for the encouraging words! How about the area where you live? Are there some classic old homes available? I know that you like the Kamakura area. Do you live near Kamakura? -Kurt :-)

  • Nah, there is nothing that I know of.

Also, not being married makes for a few obstacles when trying to get a foot in.

Pretty far though I wish (so much) that I lived there (in Kamakura) I guess there is always luck and coincidence to hope for, but as it is now, I'm about 2; hours away...

    Though, who knows : )
