I knew Paul back in the early 70's. I played bass and would sit in for his regular bassman when he wanted a night off.He was a great entertainer. One of his favorite numbers was the "The 12th of Never"
This was recorded in Nashville and was produced by Joe South. The musicians included Joe Stampley and Merle Kilgore along with a group called The Uniques from Shreveport, LA. The song was an "answer record" to Ernie K-Does "Mother-In-Law". This is one of the two recordings that charted on Billboards Hot 100 for Paul. It was really big hit at WAPE-AM in Jacksonville, FL in May of1961. Paul was very talented but simply never had a chance with a good record distributor.
I know some of the musicians that worked with paul. I am from greenville SC. The piano on this piece is similar to where Esqurita got to with New Orleans style. Is this esqu playing on this track?? I also worked with Cliff Simmons that went to Hollywood to work with Paul in thoes days. Cliff's Mother came and took him back home he was 16 yrs. old. Ha!!
Radio hit in Boston but no heavy sales in stores. Had a good dist. in King but no promotion
