@mrod1726 Very very low decor and a very well-fed cray in coolish water. I wouldn't recommend it if you are very attached to the platies though, as you can lose them. The general trick though, low decor, SMART topswimmers (read: not guppies) and a temperate tank. Tropical temps ramp up the metabolism of the cray and they get very active and very hungry. Smaller fish are faster and harder to catch.
okay well i feed him/her a diced peice of carrot everyday or day and a half, we have a filter and everything in there so its keeping the water nice nd clean but the glass on the inside of the tank is very slimy, BTW you very quick on replys i like that
@azza13mad Have a google and learn all you can about cycling. The musty smell is not a good sign and is probably an issue with lack of good bacteria in your tank. Try cutting your feeding by half in the meantime. If you feed worms - do one at a time, choose a small one, and make sure it is eaten within an hour. Some cray are terrified of the wiggling, especially if they are used to veggies etc, so for those ones you'd be best with shrimp pellets or something. :)
@Callatya yeah i dont know what mine is yet its starting to go blue around he pincers, i dont know if the diet im giving it is right thoe i give it carrot majority of the time and a little but of meat maybe once or twice a month is that alright considering they are omnivores?
@azza13mad Sure, but stay away from mammalian meat if you can. Try and feed things that they might naturally find in the wild because that is what their bodies are best able to process. Try things like earthworms, grindal worms, or small pieces of saltwater fish or shellfish. Other things to consider might be shrimp pellets or sinking carnivore pellets. I used to feed my first few cray earthworms almost exclusively with no ill-effects. :)
@azza13mad The colour is genetic :) You can't make a brown marron blue. In general carrot (or things with beta carotene) and spirulina work well as colour enhancers, but they can only enhance what is already there. Carrot would have just made a regular marron a bit more reddy-brown, and you'd have to wait a moult or two to see it :)
About $20-$30AUD/kg, depending on where you buy from. I don't eat them myself, seems wrong somehow, but even for pet specimens they tend to be sold by weight.
Hi, i just got some pet yabbies, they are little babies, yours is a great colour, and i was just wondering how you turned it blue? like do you put anything in the water, or have your tank light up, special food, blue background?
They are naturally blue, just as some other yabbies are naturally brown or black or white. I'm guessing you have C. destructor, in which case your best bet for increasing blue is good clean water, foods with spirulina and shrimp as main ingredients. There is a book by Robert McCormack that suggests you can greatly influence the colour of C.destructor by changing turbidity and other environmental factors - blue book, Yabby Farming Handbook, well worth the read ;)
@Callatya i think yabby and marron are different species, this is a marron, it's bgger, yabbies are smaller but they have larger jaws and with lighter blue body color. i could be wrong though.
@persianlover2 They are different :) Yabbies (at least the ones I'm familiar with) are Cherax destructor and Marron are Cherax tenuimanus. You can get a similar blue colour in yabbies but it doesn't have the real electric blue kick. Yabbies have an incredible range of colours, have a look at "blue pearl" for the non-red variation. The colour/turbidity of the water can also have an impact on colour, as can diet and water chemistry. I've had a few that were almost black!
@shaneolien The colour is genetic, it was born that way. If it had babies, they'd be blue too :) You can make colours more vibrant by using a light designed for plants (AquaGlo works well for blue crays) and feeding a good varied diet that includes aquatic meat and veggies. Backgrounds should be a good neutral colour, not too dark or too light as you can visually bleach or darken the colour of the creature. I like black backgrounds with gold or red/gold substrate for most things.
@octhero88 They pop up in pet shops in the autumn/winter/spring as they are difficult to house in most tropical fish distributors over the hotteer months. Failing that, you can order a box by weight from seafood suppliers, or try the local fish markets.
There are a few farms in Vic that will ship. Ask Google for one near you ;) Wait til Autumn though, this weatther is terrible for shipping live animals.
@anthacdc That is a marron. You need to check with Dept of Fisheries in your state as the rules of keeping/selling cray are more strictly enforced for dam stocking than they are for aquarium specimens.
He did have nodules/spurs, massive things too in comparison to my other cray, so he was definitely a he ;-) I was kind of thankful they were so obvious from a mormal walking position, the thought of grabbing him and flipping him over was a tad scary. He was remarkably heavy and awkward to handle!
I think one of these would make a nice meal of africans :-( they have too much surface area and are easier to grab than small darting fish, plus they'd be going for the same territory.
They need what is called "DO" or dissolved oxygen. Basically they need well-oxygenated water BUT this doesn't mean they need an airstone. Most of them will destroy airstones anyway. They need the correct temperature of water (different temperatures hold more or less O2) and moving the water surface is a good idea but not strictly necessary. You can use an airstone with your filter, but be careful they don't climb out using the tubing!
You could try guppies or white clouds, anything that swims fast and in the top level of the tank. If you keep the tank decorations low they have a lot of trouble getting close enough to the fish to catch them HOWEVER they are quite capable hunters so you have to go into the exercise expecting to lose some fish.
You probably don't want to eat him. Pellet fed creatures tend to be less flavourful than their wild caught counterparts so he'd probably leave you very disappointed. Adding to that, he's quite well decomposed by now and i'm sure that would make his flavour even less appealing to you.
Your forearm in the bit between your hand and your elbow. I believe that distance might also be known as a cubit, but I could be wrong on that.
You are very careful and look underneath. Females have two circles on the 2nd or 3rd set of legs, and males have two spurs on the 4th set of legs. Ones this big are really very heavy and you kinda don't want to hold them with one hand out of the water in case they flip that tail and fall. If you don't do it very often, a safer way is to put them in a small glass tank or large fish bag so you can look underneath without having to hold them up.
Sorry to hear that. I lost 2 of my Marron not long back during moult. What is your water hardness? Many moult deaths occur from it not being high enough.
Great to know, I'll give that a try. Doesn't that affect the integrity of their exoskeleton though?
I just feed a diet that is high in protein, mainly things that contain shellfish and crustacea, in order to get the natural colour enhancers. Spirulina wafers also go down well. I've just started offering things like scallop and mussel. I can't take any credit for this guy's colour though, I had only had him a short while before this video was taken :)
That is impressive! I'm very sad to say that Mr Marron is no more. A few days after this video he moulted, and with all the travel and shipping and holding at the wholesaler (during which dime I doubt he was fed at all), he was just not up to it. He ended up getting his gills on the outside of his carapace on one side and although I hoped he might be able to pull through and survive til his next moult, he passed away.
At the time of the video, he was easily the length of my forearm excl. claws
The filter is fine. :) Providing is ripples the surface of the water is actually does a wonderful job. This one has a spraybar pointing towards the surface so there are many ripples. Keeping the water cool also helps with the oxygen level in the tank :)
