I understand that you think and expect people to learn and speak and understand English when they come to the United States, but do you think that other countries expect the same out of us? are we not just a big melting pot now and should we not be resonable and at least try to understand what non english speaking people are doing and is that not what ESL and LEP class are for in school now a days. Thank you for making this statement! If I move to another country, I would not expect them to learn my language or expect them to put their signs in english.. If people have a problem with that, they need to go back home. My in-laws immigrated from another country in the 50's. In order for them to stay, they had to learn english and my father-in-law had to join the Army for 2 yrs. They were grateful to be able to do what ever they needed to do to stay. As a veteran, I believe that everyone is entitled to speak what they want. In thier OWN homes. The Military does not allow speaking any other language than English while on duty unless executing interpreter duties. Learn how to speak English or go back to where ever it is that you came from.
Guess you haven't been on an Army base lately. I was told by an enlisted army serviceman, that all the Puerto Ricans in his company spoke Spanish on base and they were NOT executing interpreter duties. They were socializing. In NO way should they speak another language. Speak only English while serving in the military, translating duties for foreign languages. If found speaking another language while serving, they should be dealt with swiftly. Demoted, Dishonorably discharged, etc.
Take a few history courses at a university, get educated on the role of immigrants in the USA, and, finally, get your head out of your ass. In my country Sweden (North Europe) we have loads of Muslims who speak broken Swedish and Arabic but does that mean we Swedes are learning Arabic? Not really

Instead the US is being expected to change the language on our currency, public documents and school curriculum. The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Pledge of Allegiance and currency were all written in English. And yes, if I were planning to make another country my permanent home, I would definitely learn the language.

I made a point of knowing which of my staff spoke a second language.because many of our customers spoke little or no English. Sometimes it is better to acknowledge inadequate language skills than try and get it terribly wrong.

As a veteran, I believe that everyone is entitled to speak what they want. In thier OWN homes. The Military does not allow speaking any other language than English while on duty unless executing interpreter duties. Learn how to speak English or go back to where ever it is that you came from.

Guess you haven't been on an Army base lately. I was told by an enlisted army serviceman, that all the Puerto Ricans in his company spoke Spanish on base and they were NOT executing interpreter duties. They were socializing. In NO way should they speak another language. Speak only English while serving in the military, translating duties for foreign languages. If found speaking another language while serving, they should be dealt with swiftly. Demoted, Dishonorably discharged, etc.

What you suggest says that people from China, for example, need to speak Chinese and then learn 2 other languages, that doesn't seem fair. The US Constitution does not mention anywhere that English is the official or the only language in the US.
The language of this land is the native Indian language (or languages), not English.
But if we look in a history book we will see that the Spanish discovered America, so Spanish would be the new language of America. And in New York (New Amsterdam) they used to speak Dutch, not English.
As long as I'm in this "free" country I should be able to use whatever language I please.

Instead the US is being expected to change the language on our currency, public documents and school curriculum. The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Pledge of Allegiance and currency were all written in English. And yes, if I were planning to make another country my permanent home, I would definitely learn the language.

@heroiclegendxxx Not necessarily. I spent 35 years working a travel related industry. 5 years of that was in Washington DC, our nation's capital and an international tourist heavy market. I made a point of knowing which of my staff spoke a second language.because many of our customers spoke little or no English. Sometimes it is better to acknowledge inadequate language skills than try and get it terribly wrong.

@psgeesin320 i am not speaking of the few americans who have a job that needs them to speak other languages... i am talking about 99.9% percent of the americans that dont try to speak the language of the country that they visit

@heroiclegendxxx As am I. It's unrealistic to think you can quickly learn to speak a language sufficiently to get by for one visit. (How long did it take you to learn English?) Just as I learned to service customers who did not speak English, I suspect that those in the tourist industry in your home country do also. Or do you not want the revenue that is probably brought to your country by those visitors? Perhaps you think your country should prohibit tourists? Get real.
