  • If this doesn't give you CHILLS nothing will. Buddy's left hand GOES NUTS !! I always thought he played better when he did Jerry's telethons. INSPIRATION !! Call in those pledges !!

  • no question in my mind that this stuff is amazing, but.. why do you jazz folks always compare your stuff to metal? ...lol

  • One of the greatest moments of my life, being in this studio that day in 1981 for the telethon and having the opportunity to meet Buddy and the band backstage after they played my favorite big band tune at the time. WOW! What an inspiration for me to go on to a career in music. Thank you Jerry, thank you Buddy and thank you band!

  • @AJazzGuy1 YOU WERE THERE !! In detail, what do you remember ? What sticks out ? I met Buddy face to face about this same time after a show and he was SO SHORT and those hands were so POWERFUL looking, like they could kill you in a second. The guy STILL brings me to TEARS !! 12.17.11

  • Fire!!! Burning fire!! God damn!!! I miss you Buddy!!

  • Clearly YouTube is the place for people to argue and express there opinions of each other.

  • I think I just got whiplash listening to this :) That tempo is simply inhuman!

  • OH MY GOD.

  • They certainly are on fire! What a band! Steve Marcus playing great time on his solo, Buddy is just monstrous, and my Buddy and road roommate Pete Beltran on Bass Trombone

  • You always knew when Buddy's shoulders would start that you were in for a real treat, did you catch the cymbal chokes,MISS YOU!!!!

  • This is a really good version of this tune but the best one is on a live CD called Wham with the Killer Force band. His final drum break is unbelivable, so fast and powerfull.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Have you ever seen such command of an instrument? He owned the drum kit. I met him in 1976 at a Killer Force concert in Alex Bay NY. As a young drummer the best night of my life.

  • Please just ask your favorite rock drummer to sit in with a full size big band and attempt to even get through a piece like this at this tempo without falling apart like wet tissue paper....

  • @kingorthy Right on!!! I would love to see/hear the "great" Travis Barker" pull this one off...then again...NO...he wouldn't have a clue. Buddy was the master...pure and simple!

  • Playing fast is not the same concept as playing fast with a musical sensibility combined with nuance and swing.

  • This is from Telethon 1981 - wow!

  • Thanx for posting,great suff.

  • These guys are on fire.

I loved it when Buddy called up "Time Check" at this brighter tempo.

    Smoking ~

  • What a great band, 5 sax all jamming at once.... Everyone wants to see BR do a big long solo, but I personally really like BR and think he is best with a band, keeping time, grooving, driving the band and soloing in context of a song. His time keeping and groove is when I think he really shows his talent. His solo is great in this song.

  • This song is stupid fast

  • That'd be a high G my good sir. ;)

  • oh yeah my bad. just me hearing mr wing play makes me think of super high notes like a double D, cause i heard him play the G above that right in my face once. (when i asked the stupid question of what his range was. " G above double C", he said haha that guys a monster! lol

  • oh my bad. lol when ever i think of mr wing, i think of ridiculous high notes. ever since i go up to him and ask him what his range was. he promptly got his horn back out and played a G above Double C right in my face. haha that man is a monster!

  • awesome, but the writing on screen annoyed me. and isnt it cheques rather than checks?

  • No, "check" is the dumbed-down American spelling of the simple English word 'cheque'.

  • oh right, thanks

  • @chetslad

Don't be such a pompous pasty face inbred rotten teeth anus meat pie eating limey pussy. It's CHECK you dumb ass (not arse). There is no Q in Check. Look it up. This is why England is a 3rd world country being overridden by Muslims, now called UK of Islam & Londonistan. I fly to UKI all the time. I can't understand a thing you mumbling limeys say. You still have a QUEEN and dumbo eared Prince Tampon? Ha Ha. PS we saved your ass in WWII; you are welcome. Sit down and shut up.

  • @gmcjetpilot

I really hope all Americans are not as rude as you are.

I am one of those limey bastards you refer to and I am very proud of it. We are also very proud of the collaboration between our countries during the Great War and WW2.

I think you should show a little more respect.

Buddy was my idol btw which is the reason I came to this video.

  • @pinball1970

Don't whine and butt out. No one was talking to you. Also save the straw man argument. Can you read? Where did I disrespect BR you liar. I have massive respect for Buddy Rich, and I was lucky enough to see BR live and meet him as a kid in Las Vegas. Don't whine. I sure hope the average Brit is not as much of an uptight idiot as you. Have a nice day mate! Chip-chip cheer-ee-O, you blow. Now piss off sod.

  • @gmcjetpilot

Insults come easy to you do they not?

My comments were relating to the wars not BR which is why I stuck a BTW in the sentence.

You are lucky if you met him.

    Now have a good sir.

  • @gmcjetpilot good fucking god, you are retarded.

    1) there is in fact a 'q' in the English spelling of cheque, which is in fact, the language yours is stolen from.

    3) you call someone uptight, for reacting to the sheer amount of British stereotypes you ladled out to someone who had the audacity to correct 'check' to 'cheque'.

You are the perfect American citizen aren't you, so lost and up your own arse you don't realise how much the rest of the world hates you.

  • @KFC4UANDME

We use MODERN English. No one can understand you marble mouth pasty face rotten teeth pig anus meat pie eating limey's. Join the 21st century dick head, its CHECK! FU!

    .

No two? You can count ass hole, or is it spelled arse hole. Ha ha. FU!

    .

    3) Please suck it. We beat you fag Brits April 11, 1782. Now go appease more muslim terrorist, bend over for an Arab ass F'ing in New Londonistan, UKI, United Kingdom of Islam. We'll not save you like we did in WWII coward. Piss off sod.

  • Who cares? You're annoying.

  • jesus, mary, and joseph!

  • wooo.. when i see buddy i truly realize that he was the greatest of all time... just amazing !!

  • I remember seeing this and recording it to a cassette on a cheap recorder. I always wanted to know who the lead tpt player was.

  • My friend... The lead player is the wonderful Greg Wing! He actually told me in person to check this clip out :-) His first gig with Buddy, he was just sitting in on lead and had to sight read this... I think he was in his mid 20's then. How scary would that be?!?! Greg Wing is a monster!

  • Great clip!!

  • Buddy unfortunately probably never in his life played with anyone as good as him. I am not saying the way he was was the right way to be. His behavior was awful. He was an artist. I do remember when Mel Torme wrote his bio he had Mel include the famous rant on the bus because he wanted his fans to know the whole deal. He was a complex human being with issues.

  • Agreed, but you left out one word - Buddy's behavior was awful - sometimes.

He was also one of the nicest, kindest guys you would ever want to meet, but, no one talks about those things.

When someone like Buddy is King of the Hill, there is always some loser nobody trying to knock him off.

Buddy was ok as long as his guys didn't fuck up on the bandstand. That's one thing he could not stand. He demanded an almost superhuman standard.

The quality of his bands reflects that standard ~

  • I have a friend and his dad used to play for Buddy Rich, he said he was the biggest asshole. BUT MAN COULD HE PLAY!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!

  • haha yeah my drum teacher said when he was 16 he played with buddy rich and the nickname people gave him was Ruddy Bich

but he's so amazing at drums it doesn't matter

  • Then your friend's dad could have quit Buddy's band any time he wanted to, correct?

Plus, if Buddy was such an asshole, why did your friends dad join the band to begin with?

Please give us the name of the guy - I'll check it out to see if it's legit.

What was his name and what year did he play with Buddy?

Right. All these guys who thought Buddy was such an asshole, yet they were all standing in line to join his band.

B never had ANY trouble filling a chair in his band - asshole or not ~

  • One of my favorite Buddy tunes, thanks so much for posting this old footage!

To younger drummers out there, THAT is what a REAL DRUM SOLO is....

  • Us young drummers know. :)

  • Played at the perfect tempo: fast. Great lead alto by Andy Fusco. You can tell Steve Marcus played the soli so many times he memorized it.

  • Isn't it a tenor?

  • I would estimate that at this point in his time with Buddy, Steve Marcus had played this tune at least 1200 times. He had most of the book memorized.

  • Bass player missed his tonic note @ 2:20

but he's not the only one to do this. I practice this one [ on bass ] quite a bit to keep "in form"

  • ...and play more in those 32 seconds of last solo, then most can do in 3o minutes....

  • Yes I have seen him play this in person many times. Sometimes he will play an extended solo, maybe two oe three times as long!

  • Oh ya...an who says the man could'nt play rock...he could DO IT ALL...great video....tks.

  • Fantastic. I play lead trumpet myself and know how incredibly hard it is to play this clean with this much intensity and they are doing it.

  • You think speed metal is fast, that is a fast tempo boys and girls.

  • @gmcjetpilot A friend of mine used to say to me":speed metal drummers are just failed jazz drummers".

  • another great video of buddy playing one of my favourite charts.thanks for sharing

  • Never saw this. Thanks for posting it !! Made my day today 5.5.09.

  • Those guys are tight. Great clip.

  • Greg Wing, you're AWESOME!!

  • Greg Wing, you're AWESOME!

  • GREG WING YOURE AWESOME!

  • A.W.E.S.O.M.E!

  • Oh, the Jerry Lewis Telethon. You know, I always wondered if those were aall kept for peoterior and on Laser Disc or DVD. Would be nice.

  • Well they where all tapes back than. You would hope that they would have transferred them to some digital medium by now, even if not for resale, just preservation. Heck analog magnetic tape goes away over time. Than there is legal, getting permission to produce and sell it. I am guessing all this charity stuff was a one time deal. Thanks to youtube and the folks that post it, we get some snips of the past. Now every stupid thing is capture, but classics like this are lost.

  • who's our lead trumpet player on this?

  • Greg Wing

  • =O Serious?! That's amazing. I met someone who played for Buddy Rich haha

I knew Dr. Wing was awesome but I didn't realize he was AWESOME, if you know what I mean. The next time I see him I'm definitely asking him about this lol

  • Superb, just superb arrangments...everybody just on the top of their game...thanks for posting this extremely rare footage of the greatest of all time!

  • HOLY CRAP! You don't realize what an event this is for me to watch again. OMG! I was there, in the audience in Vegas for this 1981 Muscular Dystophy Telethon and MET Buddy backstage that afternoon as I was also performing that weekend in the McDonald's All-American Jazz Band. What a thrill for an 18 year-old trombone player and big-band fan. WOW! Thanks. One of my all-time favorite tunes and Buddy Rich performances!

  • Gee, I hope you didn't have an accident in your pants from all the excitement. Guess you really didn't give a sh** about the MD children, just as long as you soiled your pants over Buddy's Band.

  • I agree! Great clip and again a flawless solo!

  • There has never been or will ever be his equal!

Brian, thanks for all the Buddy videos!
