@AndreasTPC thanks for hte comment, however as I said in the video I said I don't prefer the straight down method because the spiral allows me to branch off multiple branch mines at lower levels. Also I link to a thread on the minecraft forums for people to post stuff like this to me so that you aren't limited by youtube character limits.

@GuudeBoulderfist I meant in addition to the spiral staircase, just as a quick way to get down. Its not like it takes up much space or takes long to make, so why not?

I don't think I explained very well, so I made a short video:

The capture quality is a bit bad due to my computer being old. That drop is a good 100 tiles, from almost the top of the world to almost the bottom. As you can see you get down in just a second or two, lose no life at all.

I didn't invent it, but I've never seen it in a lets play video before so the technique might be unknown. Would be nice if you'd do it so more people can know about it.

gah youtube cut out my formatting. Anyway basically a 1x1 hole straight down to the roof of your underground mine, and at the bottom block of the shaft (in the roof of the bottom floor) you put a water source block, and two ladders under it, with another two spaces under it.

Then you can jump into the hole from the top and you'll be at the bottom in 2 seconds. The water will break your fall and the ladders will slow you down further. The drop is totally safe from any height.

Oh and one cool thing you could do to get down to your future mine fast is dig a 1x1 shaft down (only bring picks in case you hit lava or something and die). Then at the bottom you do like this (seen from the side): (this goes all the way to the top) ox ox wx Loooo Loooo ooooo ooooo xxxxxx (this is the floor) where o = open space, w = water source block, L = ladder and x = stone (continued in the next comment)

Put up ladders on each side of the underground entrance (on the inside) and it'll stop the water so you won't have water flowing in pushing you back when you try to get out. Also less chance of a monster getting stuck in the vortex and getting sucked in that way.

One oddity that i noticed: two creepers blow up next to the stone pillar that you just built, and you thought it would be safe to dig straight down and not expect to fall?

Granted it turned out to be safe but come on man. How do you expect to find the diamonds for the pants if you break a leg falling?
