I have to disagree with johncrighto about his voice. I think I could easily imagine some big Irish warrior with a voice like that, albiet less trained, belting this song out before a battle in exactly the same way. Amazing, man! Good luck!
Nice voice, however i don't think his voice suits the song, neither does the piano. Neither part really catches the emotions and spirit and essence of the song. This song was written for the irish revolutionaries, abiout them. it is of war, battle, death. it is a song of defiance and should be sung moreso in that kind of mood, it is one that deffinately cannot just be sung, u must have the proper emotions and spirit. Tho i must say, nice voice.
I did not know there was a solo version of this song. I sang this as apart of an honor choir years back; it was faster and with multiple parts it just sounds cooler. But hey, very well done; you have professional talent.
Thank you. I'm a soloist myself. When singing alone(especially in a traditional/classical setting) you need to know your stuff inside-out because any imperfection will be noticed. It takes confidence and talent to sing with that much guesto and ease. But also being a composer with choral experiance I believe that chords or harmony reveal the color of a song better than the melody alone. There are instances were just the melody is enough, but that's a lesson in music theory. Again, well done.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), "The Soldier", WoO. 157 (12 songs of various nationalities) no. 2 (1818), at the time published with a text by by William Smyth (1765-1849); it is a settting of "The Moreen", a traditional Irish air which is best known as The Minstrel Boy, on an Irish patriotic text by Thomas Moore (1779-1852)(and which would have far better suited Beethovens temperament).
Jonatah, it is difficult to reply with only 500 characters. There are several recordings, Deutsche Gramophon 7 CD cassette containing all over 150 Beethoven Folks songs (see below).
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: Volkslied-Bearbeitungen / Folksong Settings /
Felicity Lott, Thomas Allen, Anne Murray and many others,
Do you know that Beethoven wrote a beautiful setting of this tune, unfortunately published with quite another, awful text. But there is no reason why you couldn't restore this text to that gorgeous music. Beethoven set something like 150 Scotch, Irish and Welsh folksongs, and the way you sing this makse me sure you would sing them very well. Good Luck !
I cannot find any links myself, but I found some old editions, and I have two versions of the score,of which I could send you copies (or perhaps an PDF file, once I have figured out how I do that)(And is there a way to communicate directly, without putting one's e-mail here ?).
I've looked at most of your clips, they are all impressive, I think you should stop clamfishing and start studying music for very seriously. You have the gorgeous voice AND the perhaps much rarer dramatic instinct. This is at present the best of all you have done - perfecetly in style. Fot the others you stil mucht to learn (things like pronunciation etc. - you should sing Funciula in Italian). Your sense for the music is pretty close to mine, I think.
OUTSTANDING !!! Sharing this hats off to you mate!!

Yes, in this one you could hear some slips in pronunciation, but overall one of the best I've heard. A little work and we've got an album!

Shoot. The first line somehow ended up in the orcus.
Then, soldier! Come fill high the wine,
For we reck not of tomorrow;
Be ours today and we resign
All the rest to the fools of sorrow.
Gay be the hour 'til we beat to arms
Then comrade Death or Glory;
'Tis Victory in all her charms,
Or 'tis Fame in the world's bright story.

Yes, the Beethoven lyrics are:
Be ours today and we resign
All the rest to the fools of sorrow.

'Tis Victory in all her charms,
Or 'tis Fame in the world's bright story.

beautiful redition of the minstrel boy.
The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
in the ranks of death you will find him,
his fathers sword he hath girded on,
and his wild harp slung behind him
