I totally agree! It is a bad idea to have police officers with a tiny amount of training on how to handle situations with a person in an emotional crisis being put in a situation where they have to make life or death decisions. Remember: the NYPD officer who killed Iman Morales, a short time later, took his own life. The questions is what tools can we build to empower other potential players in that situation? Our plan explicitly calls for mental health workers AND consumers to play a part.
'Community crisis teams' mean the cops are still responding to peoples' emotional crises, plus they give expanded powers to 'mental health professionals'. This sets a dangerous precedent. The police shouldn't be dealing with these situations at all, either on their own or in tandem with anyone else!
