I don't understand why everyone hates somova ? She's has beautiful extensions and she is turned out, but she is solo flexible. Why does everyone say thar's a bad thing. It's like a new standard in ballet to have certain height in your extensions, so then why do people feel the need to hate and say she isn't expressive because of her extensions?
Her technique is quite sloppy here (she doesn't close a single clean fifth), but I think that's more an issue of stamina than anything...she looks verrrrry tired
I watched this after watching Tereshkina in the same part... waaaaay too much difference, Somova is definitely talented but she is very far away from other principals, and this is a very demanding role...
@odile77 Tereshkina might be better technically, but I'll be damn if I pay my good money to see Tereshkina in this or any other role. I want to see SOMOVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@odile77 Tereshkina might be better technically, but I'll be damn if I pay my good money to see Tereshkina in this or any other role. I want to see SOMOVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with Englishpatient2003 and aharper12. Somova is a great dancer, but too flexible, she doesn't have enough control in her limbs and they almost flop about, which is not good at all. i feel this role is not right for her, or else she needs more control (or both). she'd be better suited with this style in a more lyrical ballet, which etudes just isn't.
Since someone mentioned both Osipova and Somova, I've gotta say, there are much better ballerinas at both the Bolshoi and Kirov. That both companies are promoting them as stars reflects a troubling trend toward tricks (jumping for Osipova, ear high extensions for Somova); neither of them are even close to finished dancers. If I'm going to watch a Russian ballerina I'd rather see a Kondaurova or Tereshkina. But I think Veronika Part may be right, ballet in the former Soviet Union is declining.
She is good, but if you look at her feet, i can say they arent the best, maria kochetkova's feet are better, but thats just what i think, she is really good tho, and i do like the video
I have to say this: I LOVE Alina Somova. This shocks me tbh because I'm very much a ballet purist. I recognize that Alina usually has problematic hands, flimsy technique and questionable interpretation of character (not to mention that God awful extension that totally distorts her torso), but she's just so charming! When she dances, she commands the stage and you just can't take your eyes off her for one second! Hope one day she'll find the artistry and technique to match that charisma.
What on Earth reason do I have to attack your comments if I've learned of your existence on this very thread. And what this thread has to do with crazy people like you and bobibo2007? Go fight somewhere else :(
Yeh, I was at their performance in NYCC in April. She was more impressive than Lopatkina,Vishneva combined together. She expressed genuine emotions and not that awful ballet mime.
I saw Somova life in Les Etudes and it was one of the most inspired performances not just of this piece, but any ballet that I have seen. She was beyond gorgeous and so were the boys - Fadeev and Sarafanov. A performance to remember!
omigosh Alina's AMAZING!!! does anyone know where i can get the full version of this etude? can anyone tell me please? i'd appreciate it alot!! thanks!
wow sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good
I saw Les Edutes with Alina Somova in NYC just recently. She set the place on fire, I mean people were clapping, cheering. And the two men were so strong! Best performance of Etudes ever!
I saw last night with Tereshkina, it was absolutely wonderful, and today I'll see with Somova.
For the couch critics who call her weak, tired etc. you should try this ballet. At the first barre scene you maybe out of commission til the next day and you still have 25 minutes of pirotecnique.
Now long limb, high extension, being graceful having the best school in the world is bad?
I saw Ms. Somova at City Center. She was absolutely gourgeous in the ballet. And as a ballet danceer I do not see any problems with this particular video that some of you can see. I saw with Tereshkina and she was just as gourgeous.
A while ago I saw with Dvorovenko from ABT and Murphy. they did not look any better. EVERYBODY IS TIRED AT THIS POINT.
Have a look at Katherine Healy's version on YT, it's much worse and she iwas a virtuoso.
About Sarafanov, he made everyman I know look like s...
I don't go to see thr ballet to see how hard it is either. But I went to a ballet school for 10 years and this ballet IS extremelly hard and the Kirov pulls virtuosi strikes that no other company will even think of trying. and they do in perfect fifth.
I sincerely don't get why people like to badmouth the Kirov so much. Ready for it. The woman is a principal in the best company in the world. Not is some little schol in the middle of somewhere. Her serious of arabesque passes where magnificent. I saw her varitation and adagios, we'd better stop badmouthing and starting learning with them.
By the way, ABT instead of 8 tours does, tour, single turn. I thought they had the best mmen in the world until I saw Sarafanov.
I think you should LEAVE ME ALONE. you seemed to have just joined youtube and is telling people how to act. There is a place to reply and the person doesn't like what I said they can reply to me and noone seems to need your advocacy.
And I don't like to see woderful dancers like Simova, Part and Fan trashed by people who probably can barely do fifth position.
I saw last night with Tereshkina, it was absolutely wonderful, and today I'll see with Somova.

Alina Somova is super-talented. Alas, she doesn't work hard enough to realize hopes of many. Like in this clip she looks somewhat tired. Well, she shouldn't allowed herself this luxury for ballet is not for weak of heart.
I think Alina is just too thin and tall, and with that huge flexibility, it looks a little... clumsy. :/ But is really true that she haves lot of energy, what should be perfect for a role like kitri :)
This IS the best corp in the world. They move like one person. Everybody from the same school. No other company has a corp like that. IOt is definetely the KIROV.
I agree. Folks are jealous of her, because it is impossible to learn to dance like her. One has to be born Somova, just like one has to be born a Zakharova. She is going all the way to the top!
KBbrown (UK) has also been sending obscene private messages. Does anyone know where can we report abuse. People say that KBbrown is some English critic... can't be true :O
Yeah, old farts are harsh on Somova, so what? She laughs them all the way to the bank. She is one of the most celebrated young dancers in the world and she is only 21!
ok, i usually think people are harsh on somova - but she really looks awful in this - no energy, no precision, she looks like she's flailing and heavy
I really don't understand why Alina is so celebrated. She always appears sloppy and not in control when I see her in videos. Being flexible and thin isn't enough for me.
@aharper12 i feel like alina is a bit overrated as a dancer....she really doesnt do it artistically for me...im a huge dsipova fan and im glad she's not your typical flaky dancer.. i appreciate the strength
