I imagine you plan out the painting before diving into the full size version. I always have trouble coming up with ideas for abstract paintings. I usually just have to mess around with the paint until an idea comes to me. How do you come up with your ideas? Do you sketch them, do a small painting, oil pastels?
@plark15 Hello! I never sketch first. Sometimes when I go to sleep I lay in bed with my eyes closed and imagine painting a picture. My best ideas happen this way. I test things in my mind first. Most times I look at the canvas and have a vision. Sometimes I just start painting and it paints itself. Check out my etsy site at: etsy.com/shop/skyetaylorgalleries I paint whatever my vision is. Right now I'm working on a painting with cows and country settings. This is where I'm at today.
@Griekseboertjieful I use Liquidtex Gloss Medium. It extends the paint without losing pigmentation. Also its a great paint extender and ads depth. Thanks for asking.
Had a determined fly in the video. It was buzzing me while I was painting and driving me nuts. I guess you could say I was trying to get the bugs out of my work! LOL
he keeps smudging the left side its starting to look brown but i love the white blue and green...... i see he covered up the left alot..... what is he doing to the middle..? No he just restarted again... I would have stopped the painting at 1:48 :-D its beautiful at the first try.
@skyetaylorgalleries OK , have you seen Gerhard Richter's abstract works. Some interesting videos on how he applys paint. He has some large cans of paint and was wondering if that is oil or acryl. Cannot be sure what it is,but with that method of painting acrylic would dry too fst even with a retarder.
I think it's important for viewers to realise that not everyone is going to be able to understand every art work, especially when it comes to abstract. The concept behind a piece of art and the ways that it is interpreted varies from person to person, as their life experiences and that which they can relate to is completely different to everyone else. What an individual takes away from a painting is based on themselves as people and is unique. That in itself is a masterpiece.
thats pretty incredible! I love your style. suggestion - incorporate some of the bold, expressive marks either with the brush or by splashing the paint, into the final product toward the end. the marks that im talking about were seen around 1:30 - 3:00 minutes
hey sky this looks awesome! 2 ?s you spray down with water at the beginning? and what is the bottle to the right you pour on is that a gloss? thanks for any info!
Skye: Love your videos (watched just two so far) and your practical advice. Somewhere in here you gave the best advice, to which I can attest as a guy who picked up a paint brush for the first time in his 57 years 8 months ago and is absolutely loving it - to wit: Just go for it. Take a class or classes, watch stuff on-line, get some paint and get your hands, pants and shirts dirty, and, most important, free yourself - paint for yourself. That's what I got from you. It's all true. Paul
Hey Sky, awesome work! I have a question for you...at the end of your video where you have the painting displayed in a living room setting over a couch...I was wondering how I would go about doing that for some work that I would like to attempt to put online and sell. Thanks for the videos!
No the paint was not thinned with water. I keep my brushes soaking in water 24/7 and tap the water out of them before I paint. If the paint was thinned with water the color would not be as vibrant. The speeding of the video makes it look more fluid. Brush techniques in high speed also make it look fluid. I built layer on this painting which would not be possible if the paint was watered. Thanks for watching and have fun with your painting. :) God bless, Skye
I really like your painting and style, I haven't painted anything yet, but will start today, the one thing that really stood out to me, if I saw it correctly, was your paint was thinned with water so thin that it could be poured like water out of a glass. Is that what I was actually seeing ?
Trish - All off a sudden you will see results - step back and look at your work. If you love it it's finished! The hardest part of painting abstracts is knowing when to quit. One brush stroke more can make it a masterpiece or be too much. This is an art you will get over time. Don't listen to anybodies opinion. Art is subjective. If you love it than that's all that matters. You have to please yourself first before you can please others. Hang in there I know you can do it. God bless, Skye
Trisha4465 - Spend time doing research on Abstracts you like. Study how the blend the colors and try to see what colors they used. Remember trish, you can't make a mistake because you can always paint over the canvas if you do not like it. Free your mind of worries, get a color wheel to see what colors compliment one another. Shut off the phone, put on your favorite music and loose yourself. Be free! Have Fun! (Continued)
Hello Trisha4465, colors become muddy when you overwork them. If you are doing Abstracts ...well the truth is abstracts are harder to paint than most people think. Understanding what colors mix well with what colors is the key. White will mix with every color to produce a wide range of tones. Yellow with blue is cool too. Stay away from mixing black into colors. I like ultramarine blue mixed with red to produce a black like paint.
Skye...just a question...I love your easy carefree style of painting but...what do you do if when you are painting your colors start to get muddy from blending? I'm just learning to paint.
I slap on Liquitex Gloss Medium Varnish. It make the paint spread easier and ad a slight gloss that ads depth and pop the picture. When you put on the final Varnish (See my varnish video) it's a better overall finish. Hope that helps. God bless, Skye

Very good painting. I am guessing that you actually made
two different paintings in this video. You paint left handed which shows that the
design goes from left to right. Have you ever switch hands so some designs go
from right to left? You forgot to place 2x4 wood under canvass to keep drips off
canvass. Keep up the good work. Patrick
