I'm sorry but I always see Julie Andrews as Maria and Mary Martin as Peter Pan. That's how I encountered them first and that's how they will always be...for me, anyway. :)
Mary Martin is the definitive Maria. She sings most soulfully and with much feeling. Her phrasing is perfect. can see why she was the toast of Broadway. She preferred performing to a live audience rather than the contrived setting of a film lot.
KUDOS to Mr. Hammerstein for the singularly greatest verse that ever was written for a song! Ty for the psot!

I have this lp and I think Martin's voice is so pure and precise. I liked Julie Andrews, too, but Martin was meant for the stage, don't you agree?
