  • I wish he would have continued with the cold war which was just as inflationary and just as expensive as any other war.

  • @christo930 The cold war was not just expensive; the logic of nuclear war and development of nuclear weapons drove the accumulation of power in the executive branch and created the machinery of secrecy that had there-to-fore been unthinkable.

When the US was secretely bombing Cambodia it was no secret to the Cambodians; it was only secret to the american public. Legitimate secrets, like when and where D-day will occur, no longer need to be kept secret once the event occurs.

  • @soylentgreenb The root cause of all this was our failure to disarm at the end of ww2. We should have went back to pre-ww2 levels of military and military spending. A 40 year cold war could have been avoided, as would have vietnam and the other adventures of the military. No country seems to be able to resist using a large military if they have one. The military becomes far too ingrained and "dug in" so to speak. It's like any other gov bureaucracy that once created want to go on forever.

  • This guy has got to be one of the worst public speakers I have ever heard in my life.

  • @christo930 The content more than makes up for it. I'm sick of empty, glib false promises and platitudes ala politics as usual.

  • A little after 27:00 he gets all up in arms over the fact that the Fed was buying government bonds directly during WWII. That's EXACTLY what's happening now, more and more every day.

  • Strikes very close to a Serb's heart. Great speech, thank you.

  • Americans are getting the government they voted for and that they deserve. Americans want big brother and they will pay for it with high taxes, inflation and rising unemployment. We are squandering out prosperity as we grow the government instead of the private sector. We will get decline in living standards at best and risk complete collapse.

  • It's still sad for the active, freedom-loving Americans who oppose this but will also have to live in a future they didn't choose.

Eventually, though, such a socialist order will collapse under competition (somewhere) from fitter, freer markets.

  • right. Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge

    People have summoned the government.

  • Do you have a mind?

You're going to have to start using it to prove that it exists.

Do you honestly believe that had Obama run in 2000 and won, he would have spent less than Bush or somehow forced Greenspan to do something different?

If yes... THEN WHY IN THE HELL IS HE DOING THE SAME DAMNED THINGS NOW, ONLY TWICE AS MUCH, AND 8 TIMES AS FAST??

Obama is turning out to be Bush III, Bush on steroids, the Dumber to Bush's Dumb. Take away his teleprompter and he even sounds as bad as Bush.

  • Fantastic Comment!

  • I think you're ignoring the that there are far fewer freedom-loving people than there are neo-cons, lol. We didn't make a dent in policy then and we're not doing so now, even though people are doing what they can. That's what happens when you uphold democracy more than protecting people's rights. People start voting the freedoms of others away.

  • Don't worry people. We are on a road to socialism where housing, manufacturing and food belongs to the government. You will work for the government and they will pretend that they are paying you and you are goona pretend that you are working. And we will have a very nice pretend life. In the mornings you will read Pelosi Post and in the evenings you will be watching movies made by Obamawood.

  • No one gets it. Save your breath. They all still think that the fed is just "incompetent", "missing the boat", or"stupid". They STILL don't get the agenda to destroy the middle class by the central bank sadist-elitists. They STILL think that Bernanke actually believes that printing more dollars will help. He's not stupid, he's a puppet. These guys are up there calmly talking about sensible economic ideas that benefit everyone. GOOD FUCKING LUCK! Kennedy was the last one who did that.

  • Yes friend, but its easy to sit sniping in the backseats trying to excuse oneself from acting on one's conscience by being nihilistic. Easier than raising the most painful problems openly. So none of these erudite public figures trying to enlighten us are the perfect messiah. At least they're cheerfully giving constructive life. And more and more of us ARE 'getting it', and we have this tool of previously unimaginable communicative power.

  • Haha, good one.

  • higgs is great. one of the few historians alive who combines good research with good theory.

  • This whole video was informative. But the best part was probably the last 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Is there a way these slides could be posted, or pasted into the video?

  • The only way we can get them to stop is to stop paying for it. Then you will get arrested and put in jail for not paying taxes. But if we all stand together going to jail will be a badge of courage like it was when ppl were fighting for civil rights. They cannot afford to put us all in jail and feed us when no one is paying in. Do you still think this is a free country and you have rights? The only rights you have are the ones YOU are willing to stand up and fight for! Freedon here is a lie!

  • Withholding taxes is the first step in a declaration of revolution (by force of arms). If you don't pay taxes, they will send the force of the state against you and take you to the "camps." It will not be a badge of honor, as you will not return from the gulag. If you stop paying taxes, be prepared to defend your liberty by force of arms. Until you are sure that you will have overwhelming odds, this is the road to martyrdom.

  • There is one method of this that isn't illegal: Make less money.

Sure it would require buying less stuff, a smaller living space, older car, etc. But isn't starving leviathan worth it?

I would never suggest trading services for goods and other illegal "underground economy" activity, of course, or using non-FRN things as money which is also illegal. No. I would never advocate such things Mr. Police Man.

That's what I get for using my real name. Sheesh.

  • if the government can impose an income tax on its citizens at 30%, what's to stop them from imposing an income tax of 99%.........nothing. that is why the income tax is illegal.

  • I remember, back when the top tax bracket was 70%, Bob Hope made a movie in which he played the worlds most wealthy man.

He's in a bar, talking to a woman, and he says, "I'm in the 110% tax bracket. The only way I can make money is to go broke."

  • What does it cost to perpetuate a set of social trends? Look at lifestyle choices. What did it take to get me my chair? A tree was felled(chainsaw, truck,a mill, etc...).What did it take to get that? The consumption and the resources all add up.With planned obsolescence (in the name of profit), AND the consumer's DESIRE to continue the consumption we get a cycle of TAKE. The resources MUST come from somewhere, and unfortunately, people stand in the way. It's time to look at the Desires.

  • Hehe it's funny, a girl at my university complained in the uni newspaper about how consumerist the Keynesian policies implemented by the british govt are, and was met with derision by some of the econ students in subsequent editions... the very people who should be saying what she was saying.

  • most college students are puppets, exactly as intended

  • and we need to live in the realm of the should if we recognize the better from the worse...ethics in life and in action - being purposeful and accountable. That is our only hope.

  • Look at how lawsuits have sky-rocketed in the last 20 years. How much did the woman get that spilled her coffee at McDonald's? 52 million or something? She held the restaurant accountable for serving hot coffee!

It's a symptom of the disease of UN-accountability. (pun intended).
