Hey folks - fyi - the date ids actually Dec 5, 1974, They opened for Queen during queens first tour of Germany. I was supposed to go to the show but was not allowed to go - I was 14 - My friends dad, Kai Warner, was they guy who promoted Queen on this tour. I saw this clip on German TV sometime later in 1975 and was real bummed I could not go that night. I saw so many bands in this hall including Little feat, Necktar, Wishbone ash, Return to forever. On and on…A greet old concert hall..
@rolesvill yeah as what I heard...pressures from Ronnie and Gary I guess........ and they play it live again with Gaines on guitar groped in the dark....apologies since Gaines is an awesome guitar player though specially his work with Allen on Freebird....... :D
@benchmat : Steve Gaines was great in his tunes, Gary & Allen in all their stuff. Ed King is major NOT RECOGNIZED as a huge contributor to that early Lynyrd Skynyrd sound. Just Les Pauls and Firebirds alone could NOT get that edgy Fender twang sound Skynyrd is known for. Like in Swamp Music, what guitar is best for that intro?
The Convair departed the Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) a little after 4 PM, Eastern time, on October 20th, 1977, and bound for Ryan Airport (BTR) in Baton Rogue. Aboard were the two pilots, and 24 passengers, all associated with Lynyrd Skynyrd in one way or another.
Ed King = Sweet Home Alabama, & Freebird lead! My dad is good friends with him. He is sooooooo good. He was also in a band called "Strawberry Alarm Clock," when he was 18. He asked my dad if he wanted to tour with the group, but he couldn't because he had to go to college to avoid the draft. Check out that groups song: Incense and Peppermints. It's funny how Ed King was in that band because the sound is totally different(at least from that song).
@MPaluba Ed King wrote that song but didnt get credit for it i do believe. Can you find out if this is true or not? Talking about Incense and Peppermint while with Strawberry Alarm Clock.
Bob Burns lives, along with Artimus Pyle, Ed King & Gary Rossington as survivors of the '70s band. And Rickey Medlocke if you count the pre-MCA '71-'72 tenure on drums & vocals, well-documented on "Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Album".
@fullerd95 bob is not dead my friend he is still kicking around and a real nice guy.i would like to say this having met the original band all the guys were real nice and Ronnie was one tuff ass i mean that in all do respect. Ronnie was a street kid and you could tell by his manners just a dam nice guy and friendly as hell.in his passing the world of rock n roll lost a great one.rip all the ls boys who are gone and to cassie gains to.
The sheet music for Billy Powell's "Sweet Home Alabama" piano solo can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm. His solos from "Call Me the Breeze" and "I Know a Little" are there also - note-for-note.
@CTVROD ok thanks. Cuz I have the thyrty year anniversery cd and that guy is in one of the pictures and Im like "did van zant put weight on or something" lmao.
@richietheripper nono, Ed King is alive. He posts on youtubevideos from his own channel, Edking1949. He got left the band due to heartproblems, and I also think van Zant didn't like his playing. He was later not allowed to rejoin. "Luckily", he didn't rejoin and is alive today.
@niclasfrederiksen Actually, Ed King left the band in '75, citing tour exhaustion. He returned when the band reunited in '87, but around '96 he had to leave again due to heart problems. This time, he wasn't allowed back in the band, for reasons I don't know.
@johnflaherty oh, I must have mixed up the years. Thanks for pointing it out. I saw that Ed King himself actually posted here on YouTube on another Skynyrd video from the '74 Hamburg show. It's Freebird. Not many artists actually take their time to discuss things with random people on the internet, but apparently Edking1949 does.
@richietheripper : Ed King. He's just the SIGNITURE SOUND OF EVERY LYNYRD SKYNYRD SONG FROM ALABAMA TO SWAMP MUSIC TO MISSISSIPPI KID AND A HALF DOZEN OTHERS. THAT'S ALL HE IS. SOME FAT GUY IN A WHITE SHIRT WHO CAN PLAY A FUKIN' STRAT LIKE GOD. THAT'S FUKIN' IT...FOR FUCK SAKES MAN.
