I notice your boat balances well, but given the size it would seem a tiller pilot, of which some can be found cheap on ebay (I sold one of mine from my old westsail for $900 and it was the largest raymarine made) I have seen small units for boats your size for as little as $200. I noticed you mentioned hand stearing being a pain, but just wondered why you have not considered a tiller pilot if not when sailing at least when you have to motor for a long time. I solo a lot and find them useful
sorry I missed that one. Had two die on me crossing the gulf of mexico from New Orleans. One down one on the way back. Pulled out one that came with the boat, and old Combi unit perhaps 20 years or more old, basic tech for it's day, and it drove the boat better than the Navicos that I had (they have improved their product since then) Later went with the 4000 Raymarine tiller pilot. Never had a problem. Had to duck tape the combi to the bulkhead as we had no mount for the last 100 miles
I will be sailing to the Marquesas in the near future and have heard how hard fishing is without real bait, so will be looking forwards to the flying fish. Nice video. Thanks
@killyouin1punch Our boat sails very well with just the jib. The main is really not much help if the wind is much forward of the beam. We almost always have it reefed unless the wind is very light and far aft.
my favorite account of eating flying fish daily for breakfast is from a sail Galapagos to The Marquesas .. all this in 1945 though.. Bigger fish then?? who knows :)
@vega1860 just saw an episode of Traveloge on PBS round here about Taiwan... where the flying fish is aparently a good 15-16 inch long and sustains entire tribal culture .. the Tao people.. the vast Pacific and further ..
Flyin' sardines.

@twblaw On Day 32 in this series, we mention that the tiller pilot has failed.

Do you sail mostly jib or when do you use mainsail?

@aleko11 I don't know about flying fish but any commercial fisherman will tell you that fish, in general, are smaller and fewer than they used to be.

Do you two fish along the way?

@smacdiesel Yes. On this trip, however, the only thing we caught were the flying fish in this video.
