  • He's right about accouunts. I am an American living in the CIS and I can only open a general bank account and a savings account. I can't open any kind of investment account here because of my U.S. citizenship.

  • I always wanted to live in Asia and then I deciced to move to China-- and almost did -- without a developed plan.

And then one day (in 1999) I was reading the classified section of The Los Angeles Times, actually the employment section. I turned to 'STOCKBROKERS' even though I am not now nor have I ever been, a srockbroker. And there it was!! An ad that stated: "NASD Licensed Broker Dealer Seeks agressive brokers for Asia office"

    I dialed the phone number.

I stood up and paced the floor...

I stood up and paced the floor... and I spoke with conviction about my desire to live and work in Asia!!

Obviously, I was selling the hiring authority, the decision maker, on the other end.

I got the job and moved to Taipei, Taiwan!!!

On the plane ride over I was with two other guys from the LA area who had been hired by the same firm.

My point is that you need to get your head into having some reason to get over there.

Now I go to Asia every year for vacation, and will move...

  • Now I go to Asia every year for vacation, and I will move there to live in no more than the 3 to 5 year future.

The key to my having been able visit Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei, Kauhsiung, Xiemen, Fuzhou, Shenzhen, Islamabad, the Khyber Pass, Lahore, Karachi, Manila, Makati, and other cities in Asia... have primarily been based upon my ability to say hello to people on the street, really 'anywhere', in order to bigin a conversation.

You could ask for directions. You could say 'excuse me'....

  • You could say 'excuse me' ..... (wait for an acknowledgement)

'Do you speak __?' Or, 'By chance are you from__?'

And then you share some details about your life, make a comment about a certain food from a certain region that is relevant to them...

Sometimes I'll ask, 'Will you be traveling back home in the next couple of years?'

Make it interesting for them and then offer your email before saying goodbye.

In the end you will see that that minute may be the start of your travels in Asia

  • This man makes sense. I saw this coming as SOON as Bush was voted in for the 2nd term 6 years ago ! We're looking at a downward spiral of the west.

We're going to see the rise of the East. But its going to be a cut throat race.
