Because he drinks and smokes and is getting old. He understands that we only live once and decided to enjoy it and not feel guilty about enjoying life. People like you should die a slow death along with all the hungry children of the Earth.
Unless you do not eat meat, you have no opinion. All meat/fish processing/ slaughter is 'cruel' whether it happens in front of you or not. I quite find this a more dignified way actually.

@oni242 In answer 2 your question: I do report foie gras; it's removed from Scottish Government functions, House of Fraser stores. Production banned in York, Chicago, Illinois, Austria, Germany, California, Italy etc. The list grows! Yes, lobsters should be banned from being boiled alive. Yes, I fight against factory farming in any form.
And no it's not "because of some underlying prejudice I have against a culture".
