  • Actually, very nice! A major improvement over the original look.

  • @tyrssen1 thanks!

  • So you didn't have any problems spraying lacquer over the enamel? Was the primer enamel based or lacquer based? Thanks!

  • @guitartrombone6 Nope. No problems at all. I'm not sure what the primer was, i think it was called automotive and wood primer.

  • @aLilBitOEverything cool thanks! btw the guitar looks excellent

  • @aLilBitOEverything That's good to hear. Thank you for the reply! btw the guitar looks amazing.

  • get the clear done at an autobody shop, it will dry faster and look like glass, worth a bit of extra money, spray cans just don't work well.

  • nice swirl, but im not sure why people still sand the guitar all the way back down to the naked wood as it takes sooo loong, i quickly realised that you onlly really need to take the top shine off with a p60 grit paper and your primer will stick but i do sell them so i want the swirl done quickly,

  • Looks great bud! Your video was good also.

It took me three attempts till I was satisied with my first Guitar Swirl Painting. Nevermind some of these rude comments. This is abstract painting and the results can never be duplicated. I'm using urethane enamel bomb can to clear coat mine. It dries quick and looks just as good as lacquer. I won't be waiting 2 months for mine to dry. \m/

  • shitty color choice.

  • Its not a bad vid. I swirled my guitar last year. came out decnt on the top but was really clumpy on the bottom. what was the paint you used? i used a small little bottle from a hobby shop. I wanna do it agian but i don't want it to look trashy like it did the first time. What would be some recomendations on materials and time length for doing it??

  • @DemiGod00023 I don't remember the brand. I bought it at Lowes or Home Depot. It just has to be enamel paint. I don't know what you mean by "what materials", but it takes like a week or two to get all of the old paint stripped off and new paint sprayed on. Then it takes like 3 months for the clear coat to dry.

  • @aLilBitOEverything What sort of clear did you use that takes 3 months to dry???

If it took that long, you mixed it wrong or it was bad. It should be dry to the touch in a matter of hours, fine to handle gently after 12hrs, 24hrs should be "dry, and after a week of two it should be rock hard and completely cured.

Also, if you use less paint, like a LOT less, you will likely get better results.

Why 2 weeks to strip the paint? Should be a hour or two?

  • @kenny474 I don't remember the name, I just know it was a lacquer. The first few coats dry very quickly, but once you get like 3 cans of it on it doesn't dry as fast. It will feel hard after about a week, but as soon as you set it on something, such as carpet, for a while; it will put little dents on the guitar. As soon as the guitar stops smelling like paint is when you know it is fully cured.

And yea, i used a little too much paint, but it still looks pretty good.

  • @aLilBitOEverything

I see, you simply applied too much lacquer. Lacquer isn't meant to build that thick. The "30 coat hand rubbed" lacquer jobs you hear of use lacquer that is much thinner than spray bombs, as well the "rubbing" is wet sanding between coats, which removes much of the film.

Next time, 4 or 5 coats, 6 at most. Use Lacquer sanding sealer first, then sand that with 600, 800 and 1000. Then the top coats. After curing, wet-sand to 2000 and buff. Pure glass sheen.

  • @aLilBitOEverything

Also, the reason I say too much lacquer, is that once it gets that thick, it's very, very prone to shrinkage and eventually cracking.

Ask me how I know that. And I didn't have nearly as thick a film as I bet you have there.

I promise you, follow my lead on the steps below next time and you will love it. The film doesn't need to be super thick like that, just makes it harder to repair when you do eventually chip it. You know it's going to happen.....

  • @aLilBitOEverything And yes, it does look sweet. I'd be proud to call it mine for sure. If I played guitar anyway!

  • @kenny474 also, it only takes 2 weeks to strip and re paint if you do it in your spare time. Getting the paint off is the most difficult part, though. It is really really thick.

  • @aLilBitOEverything but why do i have to sand the guitar after clear coating? i just don't get it

  • What would you suggest for doing this to a guitar that is one piece/neck thru? What should I use to cover my fretboard?

  • @CleanseTheSoul I think i've seen some other videos where people wrap it up with a ton of masking (painters) tape.

  • i bet that chubby guy drank all the beer, took a big smelly dump, hit on yer sister, and left. Great job!. But you knew that before I did!

  • @IETCHX69 He is only 17, so he can't drink; He might have taken a dump; and i don't have a sister, but thanks for the comment!

  • @aLilBitOEverything just trying to be funny, my girlfriend would say,"don't"

  • @IETCHX69 yea, i know.

  • what's the difference between the acrilyc paint and the enamel paint?

  • @stratozalez I'm not exactly sure, all i know is that you have to use enamel paint.

  • @stratozalez Acrylic paint is water based and will mix with the water

  • @Fading52 your using acrylic paint!! u have to use enamel paint smarty

  • What types of sand papers did you use to sand off the old finish ?

  • @RattleheadGuitarrist I think it was 60 or 80 grit, and then once i got down to the wood i used 120 and 220.

  • @aLilBitOEverything Thanks man, I think i will start on mine tomorrow. Im gonna do it green and black with gold hardware its gonna look awsome...i think...

  • @Fading52 Maybe you don't have the right ratio of borax, or the water isn't the right temp.

  • @Fading52 You have to use enamel paint, not acrylic.

  • Thank you so much

  • @grzegor11 you're welcome.

  • Thank u so much. Awesome

  • @holyssun You're Welcome.

  • what kind of paint do you use or does it matter?

  • @trevorbrown07 yes. It has to be enamel paint. The brand doesn't matter.

  • Very nice!! Now did u use the borax??? If so how much did u use??

  • @jradical8 yes. Go to 1:08 and look in the bottom left corner.

  • way too fast!

  • @killernils That is what the pause button is for.

  • @aLilBitOEverything I mean u where dropping the guitar so fast into the water

  • @killernils That's your opinion. I think it was just right.

  • @aLilBitOEverything well the result talked for itself

  • @killernils yes. It turned out awesome. It' might not look exactly like some of the other people's that have made videos, but it is different and still looks pretty dang good.

  • :o are you shitting me 4-12 weeks to dry :o :o :o :o why does it take so long ?

  • @tibothenr I don't know why it takes that long, but i let mine set for 3 months and it was still a little bit soft. Once i sanded it and finished everything I left it on the stand for 1 night, and when i woke up i could see the shape of stand on the bottom of the guitar. It isn't that noticeable but you can see it if you look closely. The main thing is you have to let it set until it doesn't smell like paint anymore.

  • @aLilBitOEverything wow did you do all 15 layers at once ?

  • @tibothenr no. the 1st few layers i sprayed in 1 day, but after the 1st can, i started doing like 2 layers per day.

  • @aLilBitOEverything thats probably why there was WAY to much lacquer on the guitar thats why it took so long

  • @tibothenr No, not really. If you look at other videos, and websites they all say to use 2-3 cans of lacquer and that it takes 2-4 months for it to fully cure (harden).

  • @aLilBitOEverything hmmm............ i do think that if you do the layers 1 at a time it will go faster

  • @tibothenr maybe...

  • do you think i could use revell enamel model paints ?

  • @tibothenr probably. I would test it on a piece of wood first though.

  • what kind of paint did you use also what kind of lacquer

  • @MrClemsonFootball it's enamel paint. I don't remember the brand, but i just went to a paint store and asked for enamel paint and they had it. I also don't remember the brand of lacquer; i'm pretty sure any brand will work.

  • what kind of paint did you use

  • Really great color combo! Thanks for showing the guitar put back together. I'm getting ready to do an Ibby 7-string. Question. Why did you put the silver paint on after primer and not just dip when primered?

  • @boaterderek Thanks. I thought the paint was going to be shinier than what it turned out to be. You don't have to paint it if you don't want to. Good luck on your swirl project!

  • @aLilBitOEverything I tried a piece of wood last night and the paint looked really "greasy" in the bucket. Any suggestions as to why I don't have sharp lines in my swirls and why the paint (Humbrol Gloss Enamel) would look greasy? If you'd like to email me...that might be better

  • @boaterderek maybe you have too much, or not enough borax in the water. I've heard if you don't have the perfect amount the paint will spread out a ton, or not spread out at all. You should make a video of it and then i could probably give you a better answer.

  • oke, i got 2 questions.

    why the sandpaper.

and can you aply the clear lacquer right a way or do i need to wait till the swirlpaint has dried?

    Thanks

  • @ducktapelover1 what do you mean "why the sandpaper?" and yes you need to wait like a day or two for the enamel paint (swirl paint) to dry before you start spraying the clear.

  • @aLilBitOEverything oke, and i mean step 7, why is that. (sorry im very new to this whole thing) :)

  • @ducktapelover1 Once you put all of the clear coats on it wont be perfectly flat, and will have what they call orange peal. You have to sand off all of the orange peal (so that it isn't shiny any more), but you can't sand down to the swirl paint or it will be ruined.

  • @aLilBitOEverything awesome thanks man

  • @ducktapelover1 you're welcome.

  • is that a joke or do i realy have to wait 4-12 weeks?

  • @thenunez96 No, you don't have to if you want it to turn out like garbage. Waiting that long lets the clear coats harden. If you don't, whenever it touches something it will leave a dent on it.

  • Im on mobile and im not sure how to reply but thanks.

  • @GuitarSpasm83 you're welcome.

  • What is the stick you use to attach to the neck part for holding and how do I do this?

  • @GuitarSpasm83 It is just a piece of wood that i screwed to where the neck goes, with 2 screws. Don't make them go all of the way through the back of the guitar, just about 1/2 way in.

  • Really nice finish! :)

Overall nice job on the swirl.

  • @ElliotTheMoose4 Thanks!

  • That is a nice colour combo. well done!

  • @j2112c Thanks!

  • Really nicely done man XD I just have couple of questions. First, how much paint you used and did you do any sanding between the silver spray coats?

  • @sumppi95 I used one can of primer, one can of paint, and 3 cans of clear coat. Yea, i did a very light wetsanding in between coats with 1000 grit sand paper.

  • dip the dog while your at it

  • @AGDFRY My friend told me to do that too. I don't think my mom would like it though.

  • Looks very cool. :)
