It acts as another way to sense the enemy's location, the bigger and redder the spikes are, the bigger the approaching threat is. Kojima implemented that back before the dualshock 3 controllers came out, it was supposed to help us out since there was no vibration function. But now that there is, you dont have to use it, but you can if you want to.
