I love England, but I must say the big error was the whole Irish thing. They should have let it go and made them a REAL partner rather than pseudo-imperial holding. I understand the arguments of both sides, but we in the West must stand on the side of Liberty and part of Liberty means allowing each and every one of us have our own slice of land to call home and to call our own. Thatcher has very few achievements. She was the worst prime minister of the twentieth century. She was an admirer of the fascist general Pinochet of Chile. She didnt care about the poor. All she cared about was the rich.
£100 greater average income per week in real terms; 200% increase of funding in the NHS; The backs of the trade unions broken; industry modernised; a financial boom period (interrupted by two recessions which are drops in the ocean compared to Brown's current mess); more people in employment than ever before in Britain (despite the ravaging unemployment caused by various factors). I thought the speech was superbly delivered, and captures the prevailing doctrine of the time, but it is the economic liberalism of this era, led by Thatcher and Reagan, and the deregulation of the market which has led to our current global calamity.
