We the Rookie Blue BG Performers want to congratulate you on your impressive video. Barrington says "Wicked", and a whole bunch was us are going to check it out and leave a personal comment.
@qwertyfire Really? lol this guy did a half way decent job but he didn't kill it for sure! Ity takes much more than travel to make a good video. Check us out, we are curently traveling the world, cutting up our own videos, and we proffesionally kill it in every country we go. I'm just saying for the sake of saying it..
Guys , I cannot find Salvador - spanish rider I've met in Ethiopia in 2008 January . He was cycling his solo world tour for about two years at that time , whitout avoiding the wildest places .... Ethiopia was 26st african country - and about 37 000 km covered already . He was planing to reach Japan like in two years ...
24 countries, 6 months? word of advice to anyone planning an extended travel trip: less countries, more time. you don't get to know a place or any of it's people by spending week there.
I usually reply to comments in private messages, but you bring up a very good point I'd like to address.
I definitely agree with you, avalanchesoul - I feel like I barely saw them.
However, this video shows highlights from my first trip overseas, and I like the idea of getting a sample platter to figure out which main course I'd like to take time with later.
After "previewing" 24 countries, I'd make a much different choice on where to invest 6 months compared to beforehand.
yeah, it's all good. whether you ever make it back out on the road or not at least you got a taste. everybody has the same questions and make the same mistakes when planning a long trip. i just wanted to share one of the important lessons. it's one of the few things pretty much everyone agrees on who has done any extended travel. the other ones being: cut the amount of things you bring in half, always remember how fortunate you are, and, at least for your first trip, to go it alone. cheers!
@avalanchesoul Total BS in my opinion. I think one should travel at ones own pace. It's all relative, what is short to you may be long to someone else. I know when I travel I get bored easily. And on the note about getting to know the place or people or culture, its pretending you know what everyone else likes, should like, and what they should do. Everyone travels differently. I think as long as it is done responsible who cares how they do it.
under the guise of seeming oh so open-minded, you want to invalidate such a basic piece of travel advice pretty much everyone (who's traveled) and their mother would agree on: to take their time.
if all you like to do is "see the sights" and keep moving, who gives a shit. the advice i gave is directed to the mistake all first time travelers seem to want to have done differently. but hey, you wanna be a tourist, go right ahead.
@avalanchesoul Haha. I was just waiting for you to bring up the lame tourist vs. traveler argument. The fact that you mentioned it shows how simple and dichotomous your thinking is. Stop pretending you know how others should travel and what makes them happy when they do so. So get off your travel high horse already.
@superflythaiguy you think just because you contradict something it negates it's value? i understand your "more open-minded than thou" mode of thought; it's just lame. anyone can argue anything from a deconstructivist stand point; but where does that get us? fuckin' nowhere. so stop pretending that when it comes to extended travel your idea of letting people learn the hard way is the best way. even the maker of the video agreed. so get off your "i'm so open-minded" high horse already.
Intrigue, Drama, Humour and Lead Character Charm n Brawn..well shot, well spoken, well done.Earth, Wind n Fire are the elements of earth , I think you captured it all in your trailer, may your stories never end, your spirit of adventure fill your heart n soul andthe next time an actor askforVegan,Organic,NoYeast,Soy ,Lactose intolarant vegimite sandwich toated on a full moon by a buddist monk...think to yourself....Ya i can do that...ill be back in few.... with a side of amazing footage!!!!
Well Derek ~ they say to never judge a book by its cover & never judge a craft guy by his salami sandwich. Even if you hadn't financed and shot this project entirely on your own i'd be impressed ! It is beautifully shot & composed ~ you have a great eye & a good sense of humour . Any producer who isn't clamouring to shower you with money to complete this project is insane !
There's a producer I know who just got a doc series going and is looking for another one to get off the ground. Let's talk on set. You might want to take this to him. ali
super vid mate...iv done Asia- Australia-NZ-Europe, and in sept im hitting north America and canada!! you shud come over to Ireland il show the real Ireland!! Keep up the good work mate!!
Derek! That's AMAZING! I wanna be you!! (I'd also like to be 20 again, but that seems unlikely)... congrats, man, that's really an accomplishment no matter what happens... and I predict you're gonna get your own Discovery series outta this!!!!!!!!!!
That looks amazing and intriguing.. I want to see more! Derek I had no idea. Looks like you took the trip that so many people are dying to take, but never will. How very courageous of you! I would definitely be interested in seeing the final product of this, I think your adventurous attitude and friendly outgoing nature would be perfect for this kind of show! Good luck!
absolutely gorgeous! Derek , you are an inspiration to any young upcoming film producers.. imagine what you could do with some real backup! It;s just a matter of time!
Wow! That's quite the whirlwind global adventure! Very intriguing, well written, and beautifully shot! I'd love to see more! By the way, do you do parkour or something? There were several leaps and tumbles that you did there that made me think that. Anyways, great job!
how incredibly inspiring and thrilling! i'm taking my own trek very soon across SE Asia, Aus, & NZ and this vid just got me amped up! i wish you all the luck in the world. And remember, this journey wasn't simply for you alone, but for all the people who secretly dream of it while stuck behind their desks, and perhaps will be moved to put some flesh on those dreams and finally unleash them. Thank you!
Hey! your video really makes me more excited about my trip next year. I'm going on an epic journey starting march 2010. I will say hi to you if I see you somewhere around the world =) --Angel

Wow you just lived my dream right there. I almost did that as well at the beggining of this year but I decided to save more so I can travel to more countries then I thought of doing this year. This trailer is awesome. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your adventurous journey through out the world.
Hey Derek it's Chrissy. I just wanted to let you know that this video is amazing! I can't believe you did all that! I'm looking forward to seeing more!
For a young man, still in his teens, to plan and finance such a trip; then experience the joys, challenges and sometimes real danger while visiting some 24 countries, is highly commendable in itself. To have filmed it so skilfully and imaginatively, then produce such an entertaining & compelling documentary, with basic resources, is remarkable. If Derek's proven talent, artistry and charisma were backed by a quality production company. Wow!
