Even though the taxi, or any other vehicles, had drifted into your lane with or without any intention of signalling (which is common for most drivers of all ages and races, holders of P-plate, even fresh out from driving school), you ought to check your blind-spot, slow down to assist him in overtaking you. You did a right thing to honk him as to alert him.
Thumb of rule to all drivers of any classes including me; ALWAYS give signal early to warn others of your intentions.
