Thanks for posting this info. I had a cat who died at 12 years old who had similar symptoms. I kept taking him to the vet, many times but they never detected anything. He lasted a few months. My other cat luckily, never got the disease (I was forever cleaning that litter box) and went on to live15 years more. So sorry for your loss.
$4,500 WTF I love my cat too, but that money could have done so much good in your community. Obama is right, some people do have too much cash, and it should be re-distributed for the good of humans.
aww that made me cry :( life is so crule my dog died from a kidney disfunction 30 november 2009 she died 2 weeks after we found out i know how you feel its devestating expecialy when you dont see its coming most people think it is pethetic to cry over animals and pets but its not , it will be okay, he will always live on in your heart :)
If your cat has foul smelling waste, and it's pasty, it is most likely giardia. The problem is, most veterinarians only give you ONE dose of Panicure, which DOES NOT cure it.
Tell your vet you need the following:
Panicure for 5 days
Metronidazole for 10 days
Clean their area well, and dump out the old litterbox waste, as it can reinfect them again. This will help your chances of it not recurring.
Some cats need a second dose of both medications to cure it.
Well, my cat is suspossed to be an indoor cat, but now he's an indoor/outdoor cat. LOL. And HE'S ONLY GOTTEN HIT BY A CAR 1 TIME! ONE TIME! AND HE ONLY BROKE HIS LEG!.
@ShaleenGlasgow Well, NO DUH! LOL. When your pet dies, you haven't known it as long as you have your mom, or grandma, or dad. You've known them YOUR WHOLE LIFE! LOL
@ScienceAlice cats need to be outside its hard cos of all the things you worrie about but they need freedom imagine never ever being able to leave the house you would be near enough imprisoned ,, our rules for our cats being out side is , not aloud out if we are out of the house and they must stay in at night that way they are safer but still have freedom they stay close to home so it usually just takes a whistle to get them in:)
Well, Shaleen, it all depends on how much you love your cats and how long you want them to live. Not trying to be harsh here, but that's the reality. Ask any veterinarian. I've had cats for decades and never, ever let them out - and all my cats come from the animal shelter. All have been accustomed to being outside but in my care, they are NEVER outside.
Cats can pick up H1N1 and the future therein is unknown. Furthermore, the bird/lizard/etc. population is decimated by cats.
Shaleen, there are other illnesses your outside cat can pass on to you. Giardia is the LEAST of them (humans can easily be infected with it). And we must take responsibility for the environment. Cats can cause serious problems to local fauna.
I see dead cats on the side of the road all the time - so do you. It makes me sad! If we keep them inside at all times, they will never be run over... including backing out of the driveway and killing your own cat. Happened to my neighbor. Very sad.
It's just not true! I've always had cats and they are perfectly happy inside. I play with them and they have toys - and I always have at least two so they have each other. There are many reasons a cat should be kept inside - ANY veterinarian will tell you this. Keep 'em in! They aren't imprisoned - you are anthropomorphizing. I understand - I love cats and I anthropomorphize, too! But I never, ever, ever let them out. Not since my favorite one was killed - and the vet said STOP!
I am so sorry too my cat died of brist Cancer she was sick she love to sleep a lot of time me and mom and dad we count sleep all the time we lot your cat too, she like baby to mom and dad too and she like my sister to me,
i've never seen a giardia infection be fatal. i know it can be, but i've never seen it. it must have been tough getting that infection out of your house with 10 cats. i hope your whole family was tested. because it can be passed to people too. the girl with the kitten should definitely give you some sort of compensation. i'm so sorry for tyrant. and i hope that everyone else has recovered! giardia is a b*tch to get rid of. my dog had terrible diarrhea and the meds made him sick too!
i wasn't denying the fact that it's contagious .. they got it from the litterbox. that makes sense. :) i thought that tyrant was the only one exposed to it, from the way it sounded. and yes, it can be detected with a fecal sample, but depending the stage of the infection, sometimes it cannot be detected and the suspected animal should be retested or treated. i guess in tyrants case, the infection was exasperated by his hyperthyroidism. :(
What is worse, the girl I did this favor for told me all I wanted was MONEY!!! She didn't care, she didn't even call to see how the rest of my kids were doing. I spent over $5,000 in emergency room fees, and when I told her this, she sent me an e-mail saying all I was looking for was MONEY! She never said she was sorry for my loss, nothing. I met her through a business meeting. I learned that people are very cruel, and very selfish, especially that person. Not everyone is a good person :o(
That woman sounds like the *bitch from hell*!It may not help much, but at least you can sleep easy at night knowing that you tried to be a GOOD person who was willing to do someone a favor. I wish many nights of restless leg syndrome, indigestion and sleep apnea on that woman who didn't even offer to go halfsies on the bill or offer you condolences. I hope the business you met her through demotes her to file clerk or supply-room girl. Then emails pics of her picking her nose around the office.
waht a selfish horable sounding women you lost a lovely cat because of the lovely thing you did for her and then she says all you wanted was money the mentallity of people =[
Had the girl who got the kitten had it tested completely, and the store (PetSmart) tested all the animals it let this outside store adopt out, my boy and all of my other cats (I lost another one 5 months later due to an extension of the damage from the giardia), my kids would never have suffered like they did Christmas week. I learned my lesson. I will never babysit or bring another person's pet into my home as a kind favor again. It cost me my precious children.
Every cat became extremely dehydrated, and due to Tyrant's excessive vomiting, it ripped his peritoneum. For what I thought was bringing him to the ER for fluids and help for his diarrhea, was losing him because his lungs filled up with fluid and he was suffocating to death, all in less than 7 days.
part 2 .. giardia is NOT 'highly contagious', it's contagious, yes .. but not anymore than any other intestinal parasite. if you walk outside and your cat/dog licks your shoes, it can get giardia. i didn't mean to preach .. and i am truly sorry for your loss .. poor kitty. :(
Actually, Giarida is highly contagious. And I had 12 cats in my home at the time, and they were all VERY healthy (indoor only cats), and every single cat got the giardia when they used the same litterbox the kitten did. I spoke with three veterinarians, and they all stated it could have been detected with a simple fecal test. Tyrant had hyperthyroidism and he vomited 60 times in 2 days because of the giardia. They all had extremely foul smelling feces with blood in their diarrhea, all of them
are you sure this is from giardia and not something underlying (another illness)? you say that she was with a kitten .. could it have been FVRCP (rhinotrachaetis / calicivirus / paneleukopenia) seems more likely. if he was tested for these things, than i'll shut up .. :) but, i'm a veterinary technician and i've never seen a case of giardia like this .. ever. my dog had giardia for months, before i knew .. because he had no symptoms and it was never transmitted to my cats. cont ..
I hear ya. I'm dealing with a stray problem in my neighborhood and it seems they are dropping like flies due to an illness. I'm concerned for my cat. My thoughts are to you and your cats.
Having lost a cat I know how you feel. I'd hunt her down and sue her arse off for the treatment costs and for revenge for your boy. I agree with Hawaii - f**ing bi**h.
Not all cats get it this badly. I have one out of 6 cats who has this. No other cats have symptoms. I use transdermal flagyl.
This is very sad. What treatment did your other cat have? What were the symptoms. I am starting to worry now, that I am not taking my one cat infected, seriously enough. The litter boxes are shared by all.
The vets only work on commission 20% of each bill, sorry for your loss.

I've NEVER heard of a vet giving one dose of ANY medication for giardia. Ever. I'm astonished at the idea any vet would do this.

Watching this video broke my heart. I know that helpless panicky feeling all to well myself.
I gave the video a rating of five, out of memory of your cat and anybody who knows that helpless feeling.

Please always keep cats indoors at all times. They live much longer and the bird population is safe from them.
