know how you hear a song, and it just brings back good old memories? this one just does it for me. i can remember how old i was and what movie this song was in when it became popular. man i miss the good old days....
where can i get one of these motors complete tranny and all? i have the same truck i was gonna put a cummins but every1 tells me its much easier to fit one of these in it
@f100stroker347 the bell housing was made for the SM420 trans my trucks stock tranmission. The 6 wheel drive army truck this motor was from used the same trans.
I have seen aluminum valve covers for 3/53 and or 6v, but I don't think they were much taller. The ones i have seen with jakes used the stock stamped cover and an aluminum spacer in between which I here is almost impossible to find today,or so I here. What did you have covering it up when the jakes were on there?
I made a spacer with wood It worked OK but leaked oil. I pulled the Jakes off until I could find or make a better spacer . I could never get the truck to run right with the Jakes
You might try Leid Diesel. I know they had tall valve covers meant for 6v53's with jakes. You'll have to drill and tap part of the head to run the oil line in however and add a breather. On my 3-53T I was able to obtain a cast Jacobs spacer. Otherwise there was a cast one on eBay but you'll need to make the bolt extensions that go inside the spacer. Good luck.
Yes, Jacobs Compression Engine Brakes. They were available for the 53 series Detroits however are very hard to find for this size of engine. Most trucks with 4- or 6v 53's were medium duty and didn't merit the extra cost of the jakes- the service brakes were sufficient. However some folks that repower pickups with DD's utilized them in their conversions. I used 1/2 a set off a 6v53 for my Ford and the other half is for another 3-53T I plan to put together.
You seem to be educated in the 3-53, Id like to know everything about them I could. Hp and Trq modification potential, while keeping fuel economy and overall life of the engine. Id also like to know of possible upgades etc. You wouldnt happen to have multiple resources, on the internet deticated to this, would you?
Did you have to notch your oil pan to gain axle clearance? (mine hits!) its in an '80 half ton 4x. Looking at your pic with the pan off, I cant tell how much room there is between the pickup tube and pan though. May just pull my pan off to see anyway. Nice truck by the way.
God you gotta love the music. nice vid. Did you beef up the front end and are you still running the 1/2 ton axles? Im putting in a 4-53n in my 72 f250 and im thinking that i will need to get new leafs made for the front to handle the wieght.
no pulled them off could not get them set up right Going to take it to a Detroit dealer some time to let them run the rack with them in it. Still looking for the tall aluminum valve cover
i got my bell housig and flywheel from an old bread van...in still in the early stages of my project but im going to make rthis happen this video was great inspriation
Have you ever thought of putting a stack on it? I figure if you have a large-diameter stack it might make the engine breathe easier and give you more pep. Just a thought.
Its from a 80's dodge truck fit like it was made for it. I'm using a 22gal suburban fuel tank for a 60 Chevy suburban. Im going to finish the body work one day. Maybe when I ship the truck to cambodia soon.
motelcambodia,I got my 453 in and running the problen with my kill arm was I had 3stuck injectors,so far I have done no modifacation to the 79chevy cab,I just raised it 2inchesI wanted to keep every thing stock---
you can have them on any side , blower ether side, starter on any side ,governor any side . Have the motor run CW or CCW. put the head on any way. turn the oil pan around.
Flip the block end for end. Them motors have end less combinations you can build them in
Sweet! I was wondering why mine looked wrong. I thought I had a boat motor or something. Thanks for the input! If you ever need any custom machined parts, let me know. I own a CNC machine shop. custombilletworks dot com. Thanks!
there should be a basic conversion kit for detroit diesel engines to gmc/chev pickup trucks. i'd definately like to know what it takes to get an SM420 or SM465 hooked up to the 53 series...?
that really is a performance engine,I had to take the top off of govn, the stop was stuck,it was set up to go toward the front of engine, the roll pin if on the engine side just bearly moves,if on the buffer screw side it moves 1/2-3/4,but that is toward rear of engine, dont want to start it until I can stop it,thank s for the reply love your truck, your workmanship is excellent
Make sure you dont have the levers wrong the motor will run away and blow up with no turning it off. The stop lever if wrong can push on the throttle you motor will see 100000 rpm then the rods come out the side.
why the two oil pumps or did you mean two oil pickups,I have a 453 in a 79chevy,not quit ready to drive but really looking forward to it,I have a question on the kill cable when you pul it how far does it travel, mine only moves about a quater inch,is that right-------
Nope it has two oil pumps and two pick ups .This is the high performance military 353 put out the same power as a 453 w/o turbo. The front oil seal is 71 series . I think with your kill cable a lot depends on the governor mine moves 1/2" to 1" at the choke cable the truck come with .
MC, thanks for posting the photos and new video. I really liked the hill climb, that thing just tractors right on up! Very nice. BEAUTIFUL work! *drool* :)

@12valvepower1 Nope, center lobe on cam actuates each unitized injector. Fuel rack controls amount of fuel injected.

Do you prefer the 3-53 or 4-53? Which one is the more fuel efficient?

3 53 less power but 1/3 more MPG Geared right a 3-53 would be good in a 1/2 to 3/4 ton truck
